Can my surge protector still protect my computer? Problem

I was just working at my computer when I heard a medium loud sort of "SNAP" and suddenly the lamp plugged into the surge protector went out. My immediate thought was that the bulb had blown, but the next second my computer turned itself off--just as if I had pushed and held the "on" button instead of using "Start."

I hit a light switch elsewhere in the room, and that one worked. Then I hit the computer's "on" button. I was afraid it might have been ruined, but it did come on again, and so did the lamp (strangely, as the lamp is not directly connected to the computer). The surge protector still has its green "protected" light and the orange "grounded" light on and seems to be working just fine.

Dare I continue to use this surge protector? I don't know what to expect when one of them has given its life, so to speak, to protect a PC from a power surge. Can they do it more than once and still keep working properly?
