2-panel or 6-panel door, smooth surface or woodgrain texture?

Does this 2-panel door look nice or the 6-panel one? All other doors would be changed too.

Also, does the smooth surface look better than the woodgrain textured one?

The style of house and furniture is contemporary.

I would say that the door you linked to would be country styled. Woodgrain would look more rustic to me than a smooth surface. Have you done a search on Houzz.com to look at doors in contemporary settings?

Enduring, thank you very much. I checked Houzz.com, and could only see very few doors in the pictures. How about the 2-panel arched-top door compared to the 6-panel door shown in the following link? I would have all the doors changed including the door between garage and house. Thanks.

Agree with Nicole here. It doesn't matter what costs more, what is premium and what covers what. It all comes down to what you like. So what if it is a contractor's way to cut costs? It looks nice. I think we are caught up with the cost of doing something compared to what it looks like, as if something that costs more must be the best thing to do and the best looking. Personally, I love to see a knockdown texture on my ceilings with large crown molding. Plain, flat, non-textured ceilings might be considered "high-end," and more costly, but they are, in my opinion, rather boring. Texture, metal, wood, or whatever (minus the popcorn, even though some still like it) on a ceiling adds interest and beauty. Just because knockdown is the excuse for contractors to cover up flaws is no reason to "knock" it! I remember when popcorn was the thing and bathroom ceilings were flat because in the 80s, people liked to wallpaper the ceilings, which could be considered a "texture." My 2 cents.

Molded door so no true floating panels, therefor caulking will not be necessary. I would select the same paint/finish for the doors as used for the jamb and trim. That is personal, for appearance, not a necessity. I use a semi-gloss enamel. Not familiar with the paint you reference. Make certain the surfaces are clean and free of any oil. Wash with Dirtex, or similar, if necessary. You might find that a foam roller will give you a smooth finish but you'll still need a brush for the 6-panel inside edges and the edges of the door itself. A good quality paint will self-level, just don't rework following application. Yes, personally I prefer to paint doors flat, resting on horses as I have a better chance of eliminating runs. I do two light coats a day apart, flip the door and do the reverse side. I remove the hinges and knobs/mechanism too - less trimming. I'm sure one of the pros can offer some techniques but I don't paint doors often so the above has served me well. Hope this helps, enjoy the new bathroom.

What exactly is meant by "textured" in this context? I don't think I've ever realized there were two options. Sombreuil is correct about the detectable joints in real wood doors. I grew up with wooden 4-panel doors from the 1800s, and even with multiple paint coats, the joints were detectable, as was a slight bit of wood grain. My parents recently purchased a reproduction door in the same style - solid wood - and it just looks "different" (I think the door itself is thicker, plus the wood is smoother) but the joints can still be detected. In my current house, I have (horrors) the "fake wood" 6-panel doors. They're painted white, and I believe they must be the "smooth" option. No, they don't look like real wood doors. But, they do look like the doors in most new houses today, and like what most people are used to seeing. So, I think they would only look bad to an old house purist. (I don't love them, because I am a purist, but I didn't buy this house... my husband did before he knew me.) FYI my house is traditionally-styled with white doors and white trim/baseboards.

A good painter will just use a brush for all areas...for a PANELED door anyway. I'd rather have slight brushstrokes than light "roller-stipple"! Depending on actual paint used, I'd strongly consider XIM's Latex X-tender. This ISN'T a thinner...it just relaxes the paints binder so it doesn't set-up so fast. This gives more brushing/leveling time. AFTER DOOR IS SANDED/PREPPED... * Using the best brush you can, paint the indented panels first. I'd grab an ANGLED 2.5" brush, maybe a 3". * Using brush, push paint into the corners, then pull paint out of corners into the field. Use smooth flowing strokes. Don't "dust" with the brush. Pretend you're combing long hair! * Now, paint the 4 short horizontals between the indents. feather-edge the paint about a 1/4" into the other stiles. * Center verical is next. Loooongg flowing strokes here. End your feather-edge 1/4" into the top/bottom horizontal stiles. * Now paint the top/bottom stile, ending your feather-edge 1/4" into the long side verticals. Here, you'll be painting across the bottom 2 panels, & across the top of the upper 2 panels. * The long vertical stiles at the edges are next. Complete top-to-bottom strokes here! Bottom-line: Use the best paint, prep= a light scuff-sand, and brush you can get. Avoid Floetrol if ya can. XIM is better. Rehearse your strokes/pattern. Try for the minimum stroking possible. Faron

Hi, I just think with the arched door it reads more old fashioned. Especially with the routed detail of the panels. I would think any panel number would be appropriate, just what ever number you like. When I think contemporary I think cleaner edges of the stiles and rails, without the rounded edges. I think there are examples of very clean doors on the link I provided. I like the first door for instance. There are also doors shown that I wouldn't think of as contemporary, but I am not a designer. You could post over in the decoration forum.

I would suggest a one panel door - shaker style. It looks very contemporary. No wood grain. The link you gave doesn't seem to have single panel doors.

Another consideration is whether the doors will be brushed or sprayed.
Brush marks seem to disappear on a woodgrain surface, whereas they are difficult to eliminate on a smooth surface....unless they are sprayed.
