How long can Laptop stay 'On' ?

Hello,

We are in the middle of a rather messy redo in our M.Bdrm.

I didn't want drywall dust, etc. getting all over my PC even with it disconnected and covered so I disconnected it, moved it out of our M.Bdrm and I'm using only the Laptop in the family room.

My PC is on a router and was left 'ON' all the time with no problems--unless of course I had to reboot for some reason or when doing a complete housecleaning on it.

Using the laptop exclusively for the next few weeks, can it be left in the 'On' position?

I am wireless with the laptop running off my son's broadband so it's basically the same set-up as my PC but I've heard so many disaster stories about Laptops getting Hot and frying/crashing that I want to make sure I'm not causing harm to my Laptop leaving it 'On' for a length of time.

I have a Compaq Presario V4240US with lots of bells and whistles that came with it but I haven't installed as there has been no need for them previously.

I won't be installing anything to the Laptop in the next few weeks.

I am running XP Home and use the Laptop for emailing, photo sharing with family across the U.S. and general research/message board browsing for this M.Bdrm redo project.

I've looked all over the internet for info regarding leaving a Compaq Presario V4240US 'On' and for how long it would be safe but I can't find any information on this particular Laptop.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I dont have that brand but my toshiba has been running constantly since the day I got it other than to shut down for two minutes to move into the outhouses 2nd power supply dayly.

I wouldnt leave it sitting on a sofa or bed unless it has a board under it... which is what I use, grocery story cutting board.

My Tosh is on all the time too and only down when I clean it up and blow it out every few days.

Thanks, y'all -- I do have an assortment of smaller pumps around that I use to make little fountains. I'll gang them up in the pond, and of course the big one still works intermittently. Will also follow the advice to refresh the water by at least 10%. (I have new puppies so I'm home all day for awhile.) Once again, the GW people come to the rescue!! Pat

Hi sunrisegirl, I've been on combi-patch for about 5 years. I wish I had never started it. I really believe that you do get "addicted" to it. Your body is sooooo used to it, and I'm sure it will miss it lots when you stop it. Can you possibly cut the pill in half for maybe 6 months to a year, and then stop it? I have Fibromyalgia, and unfortunately, my pain and suffering seems intricately related to hormones. The last time I tried to stop my HRT.....well.....lets just say all heck broke loose. My life was horrible. I don't believe I would ever try to stop it cold turkey again. But maybe for a more "normal" person, it could be easier. Can you talk to your Ob/gyn about it? Maybe she would have some good suggestions. And maybe you would get lucky, and not have problems at all. You could give it a try, and always go back on, if you couldn't live without it. But I've discovered that it takes at the very least, 2 months, for hormones to even begin to think about stabilizing, after a change. Good luck to you! :)

Disclaimer - this is my experience only. I am not a pool expert, just an avid DIYer, so I may not know what the heck I'm talking about. Your mileage may vary, proceed at your own risk, etc. (i.e. don't come crying to me or try to sue me if anything goes wrong). I've had my pool drained for my DIY remodeling project for about 2.5 months now. My drain has a hydrostatic relief pipe in it, but when I drained the pool I found that it had never been capped, so I'm guessing it must be clogged up (otherwise I suppose the water would have drained out). I thought about drilling a couple of holes in the deepest part to provide hydrostatic relief, but opted against it. One, I was concerned about being able to patch them sufficiently. But also, I talked to a couple of people in my neighborhood who had pools put in recently, and they said they never hit water during the excavation (and one of them even has a deep end, vs. our "party pool" which is on 5' deep). So based on that, I'm assuming the water table isn't very high in our area. Just to be safe though, on 3 different occasions during the last few months I have partially filled the pool when we have had heavy rain. I usually just put about 18-24" of water in it, to provide some extra weight without wasting too much water. Then I pump it out after the rains stop (usually waiting a day for the ground to dry out some). I also think the stories of pool shells experiencing extreme "pops" are rare and/or exagerated. But I don't think it's that uncommon to experience some slight shifting if the pool is empty for an extended period of time. I wouldn't be too surprised if I fill up my pool and the water line at one end is now an inch or two higher than the other. That happened to a guy I work with just a few months after his pool was built (and it was full of water), but he just learned to live with the pool not being perfectly level, and after 20 years it hasn't got any worse.

@EngineerChic - there are many things we don't particularly like about the location so listing them would be an arduous task. To your point, my anticipation is it will though take a while to sell though. It's a unique lot layout with farmland meeting up with 95% of our back lot with the remaining 5% being the far lot of a school. Though many people have bought and sold homes here with the school, I just anticipate it being a stumbling block. I'm personally considering 18 months once the ball gets rolling but it's only my guess and no definitive opinion given yet. Some of the existing neighbors here look at it as a buffer to not letting sex offenders move into the neighborhood so it provides some sort of safety net for the kids plus easy walking distance to school if desired. @ Andrew.. It's not easy but timing is everything as they say and we're trying to not do this in haste but somewhat prudently - if there is such a thing. @bill and kats - we have 8 months in an emergency fund which wouldn't need to be tapped for the move. Enough additional cash reserves just to cover moving expenses but not much more. That being said, you can never have too much cash available. Assuming the house we are in isn't sold at a fire sale price, we'd pull enough equity from the current house to get up near a 50% down payment on the next house. Worse case scenario 40% down payment for a fire sale. Is my wife being cautious? Yes and we both are as we weigh the decision of "when". Is it over cautions? I wouldn't point the blame on her for that either. Though we both agree it's time to consider moving on, it may be me who is a little more anxious to do it sooner than she.

Silly question I suppose, but I'm wondering just how you blow out a laptop? Does this involve removing some of the covers, or do you give it quick spurts of air down in the keys.

I take the shop vac to the keyboard and every opening, occasionally. Then turn it every which a way thumping on it and vacuum it again.

Thanks - I've got a two yr. old HP and wondered what to do to it. Don't know if I could actually "thump on it"......but I could give it a good shake. I'll get the shop vac out.

You should always be careful when vacumning around the fan blades. When you do, stick the end of a paper clip thru the fan cover and isolate the blade to keep the fan from overspinning

With our tight budget at this time I didn't need the extra expense of repairing a laptop if leaving it on was going to do it harm.

The information about blowing out the innards and making sure to use a paper clip on the blades --again, valuable info for someone like me who is afraid to push a button on the computer for fear of breaking it.

I dont know if it was mentioned, but make sure the unit is turned off before starting your cleaning and all periphials are unplugged. Dont want to damage any sockets that items are plugged into. Spray canned air (pressurized) around the keyboard, into the vent holes on the sides and bottom. Then vacumn. Make sure that the fan blades are isolated both when blowing or vacumning. If you have animals that shed alot and frequent the area your laptop is, you might want to consider taking it in to an Authorized toshiba Repair center every year or so for a complete cleaning. They disassemble it and clean it all out. All for $40 bucks up here in Canada
