Question Re: Tile cutting/sizing 12x12 down to 12x6
Comments (17)Thank you so very much Mongo, you do a superb job of explaining things. I remember you telling me on a previous post about a small wet saw, thanks for reminding me. My husband doesn't have enough hair for spray so I think I'll use some cheapy brand; it is a wonderful tip. I can do this, I pulled it off on my kitchen backsplash with even less information and the herringbone ran on the diagonal. Those tiles were pre cut and I am thankful that they were, because I didn't have a clue to the problems that could have developed if they weren't. They were apparently cut to your equation because they matched perfectly. Crazy spacing, I like the grid tech for the floor:) I remember taping my 45* drafting square to the sides of these sections for drying overnight. One night I stayed up all night to tile. It was fun though. This was my first wall, I got better on the second wall as seen in the 2nd pic: I just picked a center spot over the stove location and started - it wasn't exactly centered though, The grout was still wet at this point: You've just boosted my confidence, and others if they are following this post. Thank you so much again Mongo, for your help on this project, and on all the other projects that us lost souls post on GW....See MoreShow me your bath: 12x12 tile, different patterns on floor/wall?
Comments (4)I missed this question so hopefully I'm not too late. They're all 1/8" thick grout line. The tile on the floor is just a tiny bit off of the color of the tile on the walls (because the granite place went out of business and I had to find different tile) so the floor shows the grout lines a little bit more than the wall tile does (it's a perfect blend there). The spacers were the same though on both :) My counters in that bath are crema marfil...I just love the stuff :) In person you can't tell that the two tiles are from differnt quaries, but when I take pictures I can see one is just a tiny bit lighter than the other (the flash accentuates it) which is what makes the grout stand out that tiny bit....See MoreWhat kind of mud/mastic to use with 12 x 12 stone tile?
Comments (6)that premixed stuff is NOT recommended for stone, no matter what the manufacturer of the goop tells you. You need to use thinset. If your stone is white or light in color, white thinset, otherwise gray is fine. You will want to carefully read the information on the back of the thinset bag to ensure you are getting a product acceptable for stone. Hopefully one of the tile gurus will be along shortly to recommend some specific thinsets for you....See More12 x 12 tiles???
Comments (11)Not to hijack this thread, but my question is similar regarding the 12 x 12 vs. a 12 x 24. We are doing some updates to the front of our house - 2 story, built in 1965. Small front porch that has 4' x 32' of original concrete, including a 3 x 8 step up to the front door. (It cannot be taken out, since there is a full "cold room" under it.) Other updates include enlarging the posts, new lighting, new garage doors, etc. Nothing structural. As an overlay on the concrete, we're looking for a slate tile or a porcelain that looks like slate. Since the house is traditional, would it look better to stay with a 12 x 12 tile laid square? Or go to the 12 x 24 laid in a brick pattern? Either way, I plan to have a matching grout. Thanks for any advice!...See Morepharaoh
