oven fan noise?

I am trying to decide on a double oven and am having trouble gathering information on fan noise.

We had a GE in our last house and I never used it because the fan was so noisy you could not carry on a conversation with someone across the room. I expect some noise in convection mode (hopefully not much) but what about in conventional mode?

I would love to hear from Miele, Bosch, Thermador and Wolf owners. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

My Bosch 500 series oven fan is very quiet indeed.

Are you talking about an oven fan or an overhead range/vent hood?

I'm asking b/c I have GE Profile Trivection double ovens now and had a 1995 GE Profile Convection range in my old kitchen and none of the oven fans are/were loud at all.

I did have a problem with the convection fan on my Kenmore Elite range. It was making a very noisy tinny sound. It only did it on the convection bake cycle. The service man came and tightened up a screw. It was a normal quiet sound for awhile and then became quite noisy agian. if you have a chance to hear someone elses fan, take the oportunity, but do not rule out that it may be something that needs looking after.

Chiming in here, since I'm looking for ovens and am considering Dacor, DCS, and Thermador in the 27". Everything is a tradeoff -- but I, too, want a quiet fan. My current exhaust fan on my upper oven OTR is a horror - it goes on by itself when I am using the upper oven and stays on forever. I only use that oven in emergencies, as a result. I have an old one-piece, 2 oven range that they don't make any more Thank goodness!

I barely notice the cooling fan on my Bosch oven. I had read here of concerns with noisy fans and had been concerned, but I'm very pleased with how the Bosch turned out.

Our Wolf AG range (2007 or 2008 model) has a cooling and convection fan, BUT, it is owner activated. That is, there's a switch to turn the fan on or off as desired (toggle in at the top and the fan is in convection mode, toggle at the bottom of the switch, and it's in cooling mode). And, FWIW, the fan itself is fairly quiet. We had originally purchased a Jade AG range for our kitchen reno, in late 2006-07. We had always used/had gas ranges, however, we were totally unaware, and totally blindsided by the Jade's extremely loud, and extremely long-running cooling fan. No one ever, ever, ever mentioned this "feature" to us during our decision-making and purchase process. As luck would have it, the range itself had numerous issues, and we were all too happy to see the last of it (manufacturer buy-back). While searching for a new, replacement range, included on our list of requirements were for all 6 burners to be of uniform size and BTU's (all 6 burners had to be usable with our smallest pots and pans, as well as our largest), AND any internal cooling fan had to not only run at a reasonable decibel level, but had to have a switch or some other way to turn it on/off. We learned a lot from these forums along the way, but some of our decisions and purchases were made prior to stumbling across GW. I felt then, and still feel now, that it is a HUGE oversight for appliance manufacturers and sellers to omit information re: these loud cooling fans.

The fans on my Dacor wall ovens are so quiet you have to stand close to them to hear them.

I think you will find that there are two fans that might
create noise: 1. Convection fan 2. electronics cooling fan.

We have a Thermador single oven, and I was surprised by the cooling fan and how much it ran when the oven was on
and after the oven was off. It is not loud, does not disturb anything, but it is still there. The convection fan was expected but is also very quiet on the Thermador.

Try to find a showroom that can actually turn the oven on,
and listen to it first hand.

Thank you for all of your responses. It was the electronics cooling fan that gave me such trouble. Maybe it was just an older model gone bad. I expect the convection fan to be audible but I am pleased to hear they are not noisy. I will see if I can test ovens locally.
I just respect everyone's opinion on this forum so I wanted to hear from all of you before I take the word of a salesman.

We had a 1999 Bosch double wall oven (convection) that had a very loud fan which ran at full speed from the moment the oven was turned on until long after the oven was turned off.

Our new Dacor MOV230S has a 2 speed fan than starts out relatively quiet. As the oven heats up the fan gets louder...but not as loud as the Bosch. The fan runs for a short time as the oven cools off following cooking.

We have an open floor plan between the kitchen and family room. The Bosch was too loud for us to enjoy conversation in the family room. The Dacor does not present a problem unless we're standing next to the oven.

I just bought and installed a Bosch 500 series single wall oven a couple of months ago. There was minor shipping damage where the top of the oven was dented in a little so I took the sheetmetal off the top of the oven and bent it back into shape. I also noticed a little centrifugal fan on top under the sheetmetal.

I'm not sure, but I assume that's the electronics fan. If I had left the sheetmetal dented in and rubbing against that fan, I'm sure it would have been very loud. At a rough guess, the electronics fan is slightly louder than my 49dB DW, though I haven't really compared them back to back. I can tell when the fan is on, but it's not that loud. It's certainly no match for my toddlers. Also, since it's a fan, it's mostly just white noise (vs. the rhythmic noise of a DW)

It is a bit disconcerting how long the electronics fan stays on. I think it's actually based on the oven internal temp, since it did turn off sooner once when I had the door open trying to clean up a spill.

Finally, one other thing I noticed was that two of the sheetmetal screws were partially stripped out- one of them being one of the two fan retaining screws. If the fan was loose, that certainly could contribute to increased noise and rattling. I did go out and buy slightly larger sheetmetal screws, but didn't get around to putting them in. It is nice having the peace of mind that I could screw some bits in tighter if there was any rattling, though pulling the oven out would be a bit of a pain.
