WARNING: a virus on the board

I don't know how it is happening, but everytime I open a gardenweb forum or a thread, my computer alerts me of a virus. I found 12 viruses on a scan last night. I have just put 5 more into quarantine in order to post this.

Please check your computer for viruses.

Moderator - is there a way to look into this?

Same thing happened to me.. haven't been to this site for a month or so and AVG alerted me of a virus.

There was a similar post on the Cottage Garden forum. It could be any number of things, including AVG being over-zealous. The moderator/administrator for the site should provide some information about what's going on.

Interesting warning. I would think that if this where true, GW and Ivillage would have a posted warning to alert all users to this serious problem with our computers. Their business is on the net, they would not want any problems for users. They would immediately take action with the problem and warn all users. There is no mention of this problem on the computer forum, which I would expect an immediate posting there by those that frequently post on that forum about this. A google search has produced no info either. I posted on the computer help forum, asking if there was any validity to this post and so far no response. I also sent an e-mail to GW directly and asked if this where true. I suspect that the poster may or may not have picked up a virus somewhere else on the web and believes it came from GW and/or Ivillage OR received this info in an e-mail and assumed it to be true and posted it here for all of us to read. OMG viruses are rampant now. My dd got some off of Facebook on hers. The a week later she crashed my computer twice from FB viruses. If it wasn't for my oldest son who is majoring in Computer Programming, I would have to pay alot to get all these puter fixed lol. That's one of the reasons I don't do FB much.

Most things that pop up in that type of environment are going to be harmful. If you are using Firefox I would suggest installing Adblock Plus (link below). It allows you to stop the downloading of ads on sites you are on. Those ads take a long time to display quite often, and this lets you disable them. I'm on a new computer because my last one (old, at that) got sick with a trojan virus. I could hardly browse any sites, including here, without getting warnings. I guess somewhere along the line, I'd accidentally clicked on some ad site and ended up with it. It just seemed to snowball on me. I've been okay so far on the new computer.

It wasn't picked up by my Norton software which is up to date. Don't know if that means Norton missed it or what . . . Just know that I am wishing for my laptop to die so I can get a mac and don't have to fool with all this mess!

The forum is not actively moderated. To contact the moderator click on "technical problems" at the bottom of the forum page and explain the issue.

Some warnings are bogus and scams, just malware programs trying to get people to pay for useless on-line computer scans. I'm not saying this is necessarily the case here, but it does happen.

I usually use Linux and haven't seen a thing. I'll log out and come back with Winders and see what happens.

OK, I'm back on Winders running a freshly updated AVG and no problems. I do have a few sites' URLs that GW calls (brings in with their page) blocked, so if there is a virus that I'm not seeing, it's probably on one of them, not GW itself.

AVG has fixed this. You need to run an update on AVG. Also, every page on Gardenweb has a link to information.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Before I posted, I emailed a couple of people I know frequent the board. One of them turned up 5 viruses, so I thought I should post a warning. I didn't really want to poke around looking for technical support when everything I clicked imported another virus (real or not).
