Building a Home

interior barn or sliding door examples

My wife and I are (still) in the design phase of our build. An idea our architect recently proposed that intrigues us is using sliding or barn doors between the kitchen and dining room. The opening between the two rooms will be somewhere around 6' to 8'. I've spent some time searching this forum and the web in general but haven't found many manufacturers or good examples to look at. Has anyone here used this kind of set-up, or can anyone point me to a good website or two?

I think this is a really neat idea as well. We have it in our plan to separate part of our kitchen from a clean-up area. I have also not seen many examples of this, but here is one I've clipped in my file....from Hutker Architects.

The only place I've seen the hardware is www.barndoorhardware.com You could have a builder make doors that suit your style.

If you use old hardware, make sure it is the type that can't come off of the track, like the one posted above. I have similar old rollers that I'm going to use. They roll on the outside of the pipe, but they still can't come off. I have childhood memories of a kid who narrowly missed disaster when he managed to knock a huge barn door off of the tracks, and it came crashing down. Most barn doors have a roller at the bottom which holds the door in line whether opened or closed. My hardware didn't come with one (or the pipe, for that matter), but it's easy enough to rig up something. My barn has modern hardware, and the bottom guide is just a plastic guide wheel. Probably not necessary indoors, unless you have pets or children that might push the door outward. I'm going to try to find a small vintage roller when I install mine. I'm also trying to figure out a clever way to latch the door, as ours will be on the powder room, and some folks like to be able to secure the door when using the 'facilities'.

weedy- Thanks, the door moldings have been a worry to me. I have been thinking that the door would not clear if they were left on. I like the look of more modern/no casing, but that will be another day/another house... I am relieved to know the sliding door will pass over the moldings. The hardware is already decided on, its flush mounted V-rail tracks in the flooring. I guess I was just looking for any advice or plans. I can kind of muddle through. Cant seem to find the Instructable for the ply doors. Great looking strong easy doors, guy has a tug boat or something too.

Not sure if you've already built your project, but you might consider doing double doors and then you'd only need half your opening width in wall space to the side the door will slide.

The Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Cary, NC has absolutely beautiful "barndoors" in their Governors Room. Although the term "barndoors" is very misleading in this case. I can email you the pics I took, if you like (I haven't figured out how to post pics on GW yet). Their doors are very formal with leaded glass in the upper half and solid panelled wood on the bottom half. I even took pics of the track they are on in hopes of being able to find them.

Then I went to a local building supply company and they were showing me just their regular interior doors and I noticed that all those doors were mounted on the same type of track on the ceiling allowing each individual door to slide out to be shown then slide it back in place when done!
Basically with this type of track its just a pocket door track mounted to the ceiling on the exterior side of the finished wall (vs. between the sheetrock) There are rollers mounted to the top of the door that fit in the track. Then you simply mount your trim in front of the track so it's hidden from view and voila, you've got a formal, unobstrusive sliding door that's beautiful whether open or closed.

Johnson makes them (the kind you hide with trim, not the "rustic" hardware that is meant to be seen).

Someone on Home Decorating forum had them (exposed track) installed a while ago - you might want to search or give a yell over there.
