Comcast anti Virus Vs MSE

A friend of mine asked a me a question and I was not sure how to answer him ... he wanted to know if he gets Comcast for his Internet provider can he also have MSE on his computer. I understand Comcast supplies their cust with Norton I believe. Will they bump heads ???

You should have ONE and ONLY ONE antivirus running on a computer. If he's going to have Norton thru Comcast he SHOULD NOT have MSE too.

Does the server offer it as an option or is it forced on the user? I would prefer to use MSE.

Thanks for the info. I am in no way stupid, but my skills are heavily in language and anything related to math can easily sandbag me. I am afraid of making my computer problems worse if I try to fix them, because that is exactly what has happened in the past. I don't open suspicious files but I still get an occasional worm or virus. I live in the country, precisely, among many Mennonite farmers, and technology has not found its way very deeply into this area. Getting technical help out here from Syracuse is expensive. MY ISP, TDS, whom I hate because I believe they gravitate toward underserved areas and then exploit their customers, offers an expensive monthly "service" to keep my computer fast and clean, but it is expensive and I am suspicious od TDS. I am fortunate that I can get DSL because many of the people out here are still stuck with dialup service. Few dare to try satellite service and I have heard nothing good about it. As I said, I research anything and everything that crosses my mind or which I want to buy and I am certain I am encouraging problems that way. I will ask the guru who is eventually coming about imaging. I have Asperger Syndrome and don't deal well with change and that is why I cling to MS products--I got started on them with an ISP employee sitting next to me, who set them up, and instructed me in their use. I have tried different browsers and mail programs in the past but the differences in them were extremely annoying. Another thing--I don't "intuit" very easily and things that seem obvious to others never dawn on me. I can and do learn but I need to find a tutor who can figure out how to explain things so I can grasp them. Still, I have compelted two MS degrees and theses with high honors since computers took over the libraries.

I'm not going to defend McAfee, Emma, it's not my favorite, but as a reply to your comment above, I'll say I don't agree with you because "You get what you pay for". While some (not all) of the free programs offer decent (and narrowly focused) anti-virus protection only, few offer the broad range of security and protection services that the non-free programs offer. Most non-free programs offer more robust security, to include internet surfing and identity protection, malware protection, cleanup and automatic performance monitoring (this can be indicative of unauthorized access), and an untold number of other capabilities. A license for any of the top drawer systems can be had for under $30 a year (buy a 3 person license and share the cost with with two friends), which is affordable for anyone. You don't need to agree with me, but you can use your own eyes to see that in this and many forums, the constant parade of users who are suffering infections typically use one of the free programs. I use one comprehensive (not free) system. I use no utilities, I trigger no scans, and I pay no attention to it because it quietly works in the background and eliminates problems. Everyone is free to choose their own course.

I am making note of ravencajun's very helpful sites. My computer with Windows XP crashed last week and I had to buy a new one - I live in Toronto - and yes, I bought one that unfortunately has Windows 8. Windows 8 is not compatible with our paid for by the month security - found out that the hard way - and finally spoke with someone at Rogers who knew this - they all don't. I spent hours on the phone with HP in India and then the same with Microsoft. I also bought the Student Microsoft 2013 package that has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - but it came with a KEY number - not discs. I have successfully loaded Microsoft Office Professional (with discs) on my last 2 computers so was not expecting a major problem - but I have one. You can only use the key once and it didn't take I know it has something to do with my e-mail address. The computer store where I bought the sucker told me to enter my e-mail address and carry on when I was setting up the computer. I did so, but my password was all lower case and this would not work with the new set-up so I made up a new one (apparently you can change it - but guess what - it won't let me). The person at the Rogers, our Internet/Cable company instructed me to uninstall the Norton anti-virus so that I could re-install our monthly paid for anti-virus that we buy from them. Well, it doesn't work with Windows 8 but he didn't know this. I called Best Buy - couldn't help. So I called HP and they took control of my computer and downloaded Defender. I knew not to try and load the Microsoft office until I had an anti-virus program installed. The HP fellow tried to install it and realized after I had typed in the key that it wasn't going to work. Apparently, according to Microsoft - he transferred me to him - this happens a lot - the e-mail/password problem - ends up corrupting something and you can't reload - so now the Microsoft fellow has sent my file to the appropriate dept. to be fixed and I am to expect a call from India within 3 days. Someone had better be able to fix this because the program cost me $139.00 plus our Cdn. taxes. Then Microsoft loaded on a Hotmail e-mail - but I noticed he did it via the temporary Outlook. While I love Outlook I have not purchased it and do not need it. So when I open up Internet I get the MSN - bing business and I have to sign in with my original Rogers e-mail with the new password that has 2 capitalized alpha characters. But I want my home page to be Rogers - we have Rogers Internet. When I am lucky enough to find it I can enter my e-mail using my original password - so something is still very iffy. The 'charms' as they are called on the first page drive me nuts. I only use my computer for e-mail, Internet and some Word - plus a few of the necessary accessories to keep the computer "healthy'. I do not shop on e-Bay, Amazon, etc., I don't play games, play music or watch TV. I use it like a fancy typewriter. I know there must be a way to increase the font size and the size of the screen. At the moment everything is probably in 8 point with 2 inch margins. I have always kept my fonts large and I didn't have the margins. it isn't a problem with my vision - at almost 63 I still have 20/20 but I see no point in straining my eyes just to see the darned computer. So - I HATE IT! I haven't hooked up the Brother laser printer I bought as yet. My old printer - a Canon - that cost about $60.00 used the dreaded inkjet cartridges - and even though I would tell it not to print in colour - and I do know how - it ignored me. Of course you can't print unless there are colour and black cartridges in the printer - so there I was with $51.34 worth of 2 cartridges - the colour is very expensive - plus our taxes on hand - and I was 6 days late in being able to return them. I knew the old printer would not work with the new computer so I was printing out what I could while I was crashing. It was kind of awful - non-responsive mode for an hour at a time. I have no plans to try and reload anything on to the new computer just in case there is something wrong with the data. Then there was the old computer. I deleted what I could but couldn't manage to get rid of the stuff that I really wanted to - as in my name, registration, Outlook Express etc. - so I took off the side panel, took out the likely pieces of hardware - gave them a soaking and took the hammer to them and then put the side piece back on before I took It to the store's recycling department. So I am not a happy camper. Every time I try to do something basic it backfires, so I will definitely look at raven's websites - and I guess I had better see if that darned new printer will work. Best Buy sold it to me with the computer so it had better work - and I will be having something to say to them about the Microsoft Office package. Sorry for the rant, but you got me on Day ONE! I keep trying to load a toolbar that has something on it to allow me to change the font but so far that hasn't worked.

Thank you, Jess and Khalid for your comforting words. I went to the PA (physician assistant) on Jan 20. He checked my ears and found the right ear badly blocked, same with the left ear. When the cold virus attacks the body, it inflames the Eustachian tube. Some info. from Mayo clinic: "With plugged ears, your eustachian tubes — which run between the middle of your ears and the back of your nose — become obstructed. You may experience a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ears. You may also have ear pain, dizziness and muffled hearing. As swelling from the cold subsides, the obstruction usually resolves." He felt as if the room was spinning around him. “For the first two days after the vertigo set in, I couldn’t eat, drink, turn my head or even move my eyes from side to side without vomiting or feeling the room spin around me,” he said. More often, in URTIs, the middle ear is affected when bacteria and nasal secretions pass through the eustachian tubes to the middle ear causing fluid accumulation. A bad middle ear infection can lead to the spread of infection to the brain, or in rare cases, labyrinthitis as well,” said Dr Tan. **** From Straw, the P.A. who examined my ears recommended an MRI of the brain (magnetic resonance imaging scan) to show the inflammation. The cost? $1,000. I said, "NO way, I'm going to rinse my ears with hydrogen peroxide". I went home, fill a glass-dropper with hydrogen peroxide, rinsed my left ear. That cleared out completely. The right ear which bled, I had to rinse it 3 times with hydroxide peroxide ... and my vertigo went away !! I was able to stretch my head backward in all directions. Hydrogen peroxide kills all three: bacteria, fungi, and virus.

While MSE is widely used (because it's free), it's not highly regarded in the industry. Click on the link to see an article detailing an independent test that was done on leading AV programs earlier this year. MSE failed the test for the second time in a row.

Norton, on the other hand, usually ranks quite high in competitive testing. I use it and like it a lot, it's been 100% effective for me and it's unobtrusive. In addition, it carries out other helpful utility tasks successfully and quietly.

If you go the Norton route through Comcast, it's recommended that you download just the Norton Suite and avoid Comcast's Constant Guard component (which has been reported to cause some problems). Click around, you'll find the standalone Norton piece.

None of the competing AV products is perfect, and none is consistently better than the others. Everyone (me included) tends to prefer what they've used successfully. It seems to be a two tiered market, those that seem to perform consistently better than others in the top tier, those whose performance seems sub-par in the bottom tier. MSE is probably not in the top tier.

Any anti virus test comparison would likely be obsolete within a week because virus activity is a moving target.

From Snidely's link: Microsoft canÃ¢ÂÂt be too happy with its security software right now: For the second time in a row, the companyÃ¢ÂÂs Security Essentials failed to earn certification from AV-Test, the independent German testing lab best known for evaluating the effectiveness of antivirus software.

Then the very next paragraph: These results are noteworthy because Microsoft Security Essentials is currently (as of December) the most popular security suite in North America and the world.

If MSE was as doubtful as the article suggests surely a large portion of those subscribers would move to something deemed safer.

The second from last paragraph suggests biased reporting as it notes MSE was only one of three that failed yet they did not bother naming the other two companies. Plus if you click the second link in that paragraph you will note the tests appear to be from November/December 2012. That is months ago and a huge swath of viruses (or virii) have been released since then

There was a link to the test results at the bottom of that first article I cited, I've copied it here, below. All the results, including identification of the other two failing products, are clearly shown.

DA is right about the article in the most recent Consumer Reports issue. In it, MSE had the lowest overall score (tied with one other) of all tested products. I'm not persuaded to consider it just because many people use it. I think that's the result of many other factors irrelevant to the choice .

I'm not on an anti-MS campaign, I do prefer Win PCs and like most of the company's products. I think there are several good AV choices, I don't think MSE is one of them.

But my point is that the test linked to is months old, new viruses appear with amazing speed so that test could be redundant within hours of it being posted or published.

Ever since the second anti virus program came online there have been discussion of which is best. Too many tests of everything in life are tainted either by the testing facility or those footing the bill and have a vested interest.

I still believe what I read in a security article a few years ago. All anti virus vendors share information, the sheer volume of the stuff makes this necessary. Perhaps they do not share actual code but possibly giving other vendors a heads up on what they discover.

Think back over the years, every computer forum has those whom pop up saying they are unhappy with a particular program. They rarely if ever give a specific reason other than the feeling the current program is not living up to expectations but they really do not know why. And certainly most of us do not have the capability to closely analyse the programs ourselves.

Slow down there, owbist, there are something like a dozen or more periodic test result chart links on that page, stretching over a number of years. From glancing through it, it appears MSE is last or near last in the protection category on most of them.

AV programs don't conduct trivial searches, they have a WHOLE lot of proprietary technology and much, much more than just definitions. Some do better on some tests, some on others, but tests typically show dissimilar performances and a wide range of test scores (no matter who is doing the testing).

To get back to the original topic, I commented as I did because the OP's question strikes right at the heart of your comment. People like what they like, all will agree, but since not all AV programs are created equal, the Comcast subscription gives this person the opportunity to use an AV program that seems to be pretty consistently viewed as more effective than MSE.

I have Comcast and I use AVAST. Norton is NOT forced on users of Comcast/Xifinity cable internet.

I continue to run MSE on 2 desktops for about 2 years now because so far it has given me no reason to change. I run weekly scans with MSE-Malwarebytes-Superantispyware. In addition, I run the ESET online scanner every month or so. It has yet to find something that MSE did not. I do try to practice safe computing and do not go looking for trouble. That is really more important than debating about anitvirus products, IMHO.

Debating the merits of AVs is educational as long as it is done in a proper manner.

You shared, " I do try to practice safe computing and do not go looking for trouble." That position is a nugget of knowledge we all should follow.

The best protection against viruses and such is an informed and disciplined user. Feel free to stand on the roof top and shout your position. There are still members who need to be reached.

Continuing the debate, I will offer my impressions of paid antivirus products I've had experience with:

Best of the best: ESET, Kaspersky (if MSE fails me...would pick one)

Better than average: Avira, F-Prot

Wasn't impressed: Trend Micro, AVG

Worst of the worst: McAfee

Value for price: only you can decide

... the few times I've had virus.. I was testing a program usually because somebody asked me about it ... and I knew.. this is not safe about the same time I click the install. And then I tell myself i'm a dumb a. ...why the heck did I do that .... .usually.
