help restore gnome ubuntu 12.04

Hi all,
Well, I did a stupid thing and messed up my computer. I have a dual boot set up,
thankfully,with ubuntu 10.04,so I am able to use it. What I did was issue commands for unity while forgetting I'm using the gnome classic panel.
I have confused my pc at this point. Can I just reset gnome and be okay?
This is the command I used;
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz -1
unity --reset &

I'm no expert, just muddle through, occasionally having to fix one of my own mess-ups, so take this with a grain of salt. Strictly what I'd likely do...

(1) From 10.04 I'd manipulate to the user home directory(/home/username) on the mounted 12.04 partition.
(2) Rename the hidden .gconf directory gconf (so I have a "just in case" backup)
(3) Boot into 12.04 and hope a clean usable .gconf directory gets created.

And if that didn't work I'd perhaps try booting 12.04 and adding a new user. Should get fresh config files... should.

I booted back into 12.04 to copy some folders in case I needed to re-install or I really messed it up.....and guess what? It's back to normal gnome!
I can't explain it but its good for now. Thanks chuggerguy for your suggestions!

From the response to the photo, you know it's hard to tell. The loose end on the red wire may be for a secondary drive, can't tell if the middle of it is attached to the silver enclosure on the bottom bay and whether that is a harddrive, usaually a harddrive is just screwed inside the bay and not in a enclosure. To me it looks like the harddrive should be the black area, it's gotta be one of the two bays on the bottom. The 2 at the top are CD/DVD or floopy or whatever shows on the front of computer. A local Mom and Pop computer shop would be able to tell you in a minute if you carried it in without the case, may not even charge you. I hope the comp usa extended warranty gets there soon, the kids must really be desperate to play with it by now!

yes apt get is still around but most people want a gui based way and not learn command line. And the fact that some of the distros are altered versions specially created for use on these little netbooks makes it more difficult to help because the altered distro may not be the same as the full distro etc. Using synaptic is a breeze, you just open the synaptic package manager which would be listed in your applications menu and then when it ask for root type that in and it opens synaptic just like in that picture then you can either search for the name of the item you want or go through the list looking for it, once you do find it, say you are looking for firefox, do search for firefox, it finds it and you see it listed in the list hilight it and select mark then apply and it will tell you that it will be installing that to your pc you click ok and it does it's thing and then says it completed successfully and you close that window and voila you now have firefox on your pc. That is how you install any type of program to linux. You do not do like you did in windows and search the web and find some program that you have no idea if it is safe or not and download an exe to your pc which you then execute and hope that it is not virus laden. The programs are already all loaded into the repository and have been checked so you know they are clean and safe, you find them using synaptic or some package manager and install them. It is so much easier than the windows way. You just have to unlearn windows. Windows to Linux: A Beginner's Guide that is a must have site, there are many others that I relied on heavily when I started but by far the best thing is to find a good related forum for your version and sign up. It really is not that steep a learning curve just like going to a Mac you have to learn a new os same with linux, once you learn it you realize it makes much more sense. does that asus eee use Gnome or KDE desktop? Owbist, thanks for the suggestion of a new thread. The computer I am having problems with only has X-P. Due to a problem with my X-P machine, I have put the Ubuntu project on the back burner. Please allow me to tell you about my new problem. X-P SP3, 1024 MB memory. Due to a connection related problem I talked to the folks at ATT. They got me back on line but the computer is very slow, it has not crashed, but it takes forever for the pages to load. Sometimes I type faster than the computer can load the images of the type, and I am a very slow typer. When going from one web page to another is seems like forever. When I try to click back to the former page, also takes a long time. Also, the pages load small and I have to enlarge them, nothing seems to work like it should. I have run Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Spyware Blaster and defragged the computer...nothing bad showed up. Steve

I'm not an expert so probably can't help but... I think you have enough speed you shouldn't even need to let it buffer, but know how to do so, so it's probably not Internet speed. Your system seems fine specification-wise. To me anyway. I don't think or know much about video cards but I wouldn't think it would be the physical card, but I don't really know. My wild guess would be the driver. :) This is what mine shows when I go to "System settings"--->"Additional Drivers": If it were me, I'd try a different driver if there's any listed there. Maybe you already have? Other than that, I don't have a clue. I'm running 12.04 and youtube's and other videos play fine for me. If someone else here doesn't have the answer, there's always the Ubuntu forum. Just a thought. A bit of absolutely unrelated to anything here history of or about Vero Beach. Sort of.

Back in the late 1960's, when it was a weekend night when the moon was anywhere close to being full, several of us would get in a line and travel north on the Turnpike to Yeehaw Junction and head west down St. Rd. 60.
At high speed. Down the middle of the road. With no lights on. All the way to where the Kissimmee River leaves the lake. Then we would turn around and go back.
This was back when the interior, and most of everywhere else in the state too, including, maybe especially so, the very far southeast corner of the state, was virtually empty. The speed limit outside of any corporate limit was designated by a "Resume Safe Speed" sign. Which was, whatever you could sweet talk the FHP into letting you get away with.
This is back before Alligator Alley opened. Back when "Hi-test" was less than $.30 a gallon. Back when we would get bored with running Tamiami Trail from the old no longer there Tamiami Airport over to Naples and back, and so go all the way up north to where they actually have frost some years!

Personally, I like "Unity". But, I am a big fan of (most of) KDE 4 too. This is OpenSUSE, which I find quite nice. I have no real religious affiliation to any environment. I like E17 and XFCE and, I reckon I like them all, I had Bodhi installed for a brief time...well, I reckon everything has some pluses and minuses. Since I am only here for a bit I am going to do a Mint15 RC installation and then I am gone....

Oh yeah. I reboot anytime I install or change anything. "Always" have. More habit than anything else. Once upon a time it was damn near mandatory when doing damn near anything.

That's about the time my fresh driver's license gave me the freedom to get out, mostly just to get out of the house, and drive the back roads of South Central Ohio. I think gas was 30 something cents where I was getting it. The cheapest I can remember is 25.9ÃÂ¢ during a gas war. 1973? 1974?

I suppose I should learn to like Unity. But I'm comfortable with Classic Gnome. I like the panels, being able to drop shortcuts onto them, etc. Know where everything is too.

On a fresh install, one of the first things I do is put those dang min,max,close buttons back on the right where they belong where I'm used to. I would prefer file size be expressed in base 2 again. I haven't used Linux long, although it feels like it, Fedora 6 perhaps. Next I think it was CentOS, then Debian, and finally Ubuntu. For now that is.

I have Mint and Windows 7 on here too but rarely boot either.

I do run Windows 7 on my netbook. I think the wireless card likes the Windows driver better. I like Windows 7 though so it works out fine. It even gives me file sizes in base 2. :)
