liebherr 49 vs sub zero 42 for remodel. What would you do?

I just had a complete kitchen gut. I can get a 48 liebher, refrig one side, biofresh/freezer other side, panel ready....or I can get a panel ready sub zero 48. Both have ice makers but no ice in the door. The Liebherr is less money by almost 2k.

pros for each as I see it...

Liebherr has larger capacity than sub-zero

Liebherr has bio fresh unit, variable speed compressor

Sub zero give you the real estate bump on resale and better interior styling and more commercial "on the top compressor" look.

to me it seems a classic style over substance issue with a financial incentive to go with substance over style.

Question....what would you do? I can afford either unit but 2k is 2k. Is it worth the difference? what if they were both priced the same? Is one substantially better than the other.

Companion question. I have a 48 Culinarian on order. What 1200 Cfm insert hood would you buy? The local appliance dealer recommended a 48 ge mongram, then I saw it has mesh filters. I understand the baffles are better. Which one would you buy, and why?

BTW, title of Op is wrong, both the liebherr and the sub zero are 48.

Greg, if you are doing the kitchen for yourself, which I assume you are, go with Liebherr. Liebherr doesn't have as big of a market presence as the SZ, yet, but it's a very good fridge. I guess if this was resale, based on what you said is expected in your area, you would have gone with Wolf, not CC.

I also have CC on order, and got 48" Liebherr, for what it's worth.

We weren't *going* to replace the fridge in the remodel, but then DH saw the Miele and all was lost. He gave up replacing his '97 Altima this year, and I gave up 12" of pantry. So far, he still thinks it was worth it. We opted for the 18" freezer + 30" fridge. Unless you have a *very* small family/don't shop much/only buy for parties, I'd be loathe to go smaller. We have a family of four and cook *a lot* - I felt like my old French Door was always crammed to bursting. It really feels different than a standard fridge - being shallow and wide makes a huge difference. I don't feel like I could cram as much in there, but I also don't feel like I have to - there's isn't any place for the old stuff to lurk, so it always gets thrown out. We're still working on layout, but with the CSA basket this summer, having one drawer for fruits and one for veg is working out really well - it all fits, even in massive quantities. (Of course this causes meat/deli/cheese to divide up between the shelf and drawer, but it still seems okay.) I also like that when winter hits, I can change one of the drawers to "meat" and condense my non-root veg and fruit down to one bin. It is *really* hard to lose something in the Miele, and given that I'm the condiment queen, that's saying something. (I'm one of those people that has soy sauce, fish sauce, and three kinds of mustard - the door trays are great for that.) The freezer definitely holds more than your standard side by side freezer, even with the ice maker. I think the weirdest thing is that the door bins are actually useful - the freezer is so cold that we can put gelato in the door and it's still hard as a rock when we take it out. Like the fridge, it's easy to be well organized and have high visibility. But there is no way you're going to fit a standard size cookie sheet in there - if that's crucial to you, keep looking. And if you're a big freezer user, you're going to want a something bigger than the 18" or a deep freeze. I have a small chest freezer, though I'm beginning to mock it for being so inferior. ;-) If I had the wall space, we would have opted for two 30" and I would have gotten rid of the chest freezer. I've always hated side by sides with a passion and never want one again. Luckily, the 18" x 30" layout doesn't feel like one - it feels like what it is: a giant refrigerator with a skinny freezer. So the layout is working for me, much to DH's delight - I fought long and hard against it, and just a couple months later, don't know if I could ever go back. It's just soooo good at keeping food fresh and keeping us organized. Last note - how tall are you? The Miele top shelf is pretty high - well out of my kids (and MIL's) reach. I've got long arms, so it doesn't bother me - I made it a shallow shelf and wedge cartons of eggs up there. But if reach is a problem, then a fridge with a lower reach might be better. We seriously considered the Miele French Door, but ultimately decided we needed just a little more room. I think if it had been just the two of us (or if we didn't entertain so much) it would have been fine. Good luck!

Back to the topic of the thread! I am also researching new fridge for an upcoming complete kitchen remodel. I had an Amana Kenmore side by side refrig that was a 25 yo work horse when we moved into this house. It did not fit the space allocated and was an almond color that did not go with the other ss appliances. It was relegated to the garage. We bought a new GE Profile ss side by side and that was a huge mistake! It lasted 6 years then froze all the produce every third day requiring me to use my hair dryer to thaw out the back wall of the vegetable bins, a real PINTA! I replaced that with my sister in laws 25 yo Sub zero that she was replacing when she remodeled. I refinished the panels on the doors to match the color of my kitchen and we had to have a repair of the ice maker, about $500. It has been 4 years and that SZ is still running great, very solid. The Amana in the garage has been very loud and we know it is an energy guzzler too, but it was well made never had a repair! We replaced the Amana in the garage with a Samsung FD and it is fine for parties and large trays. Now I do not know what to do about replacing the old sub zero. I really love the side by side and the large space, it is a 48", and I use every inch of it as well as the garage refrig and there are only 2 of us! I buy in bulk, store drinks and freeze vegetables from the garden. The new sub zero same size built in does not have the newer lighting. The interior has more plastic, I like the coated metal baskets on the older model. The integrated SZ has better lighting but is way more expensive. The Thermador is nice, better lighting than SZ BI, plastic bins same as SZ but with a fake metal finish on the edges not sure how that will wear. The Thermador integrated columns same price almost as SZ BI. NO water in refrig NO door dispensers for me. If I buy new SZ BI I can canabolize the interior shelves and baskets and use in new fridge I think. That won't help the lighting but I can live with that if new model functions for 25 plus years! The Thermador is nice but if the issues others have reported regarding noise, leaking, reliability etc are more than just reported on GW that would be an expensive mistake. Anyone bought a subzero in the last few years and have you had problems? How about the Thermador how does the finish on the shelf edges and freezer racks hold up? Maintenance issues on either? Thanks

I went from a 36" cooktop to a 48" range top and I love having those extra 12" to move pots around and I have plenty of space for placing items out of the oven while I am using the range top. No need to worry about having trivets handy, and it gave me more drawer storage underneath. I have cooked on 30,36 and 48 and I much prefer having the extra real estate.

Hi Ostrich I HATED the top grill when I had to get in there to vacuum the condenser. It was horrible to unlatch standing on a short ladder. (I'm vertically challenged at 5'4) removing the springs and taking the grill off without scratching fridge or cabinetry. I'm very happy they finally came up with an ingenious way to get into the top; If I recall correctly, the latches now work similar to lifting the hood on a car. I saw it at Ferguson's. The ice maker takes up a lot of space in the freezer section but one would expect that. We like having an ice maker as I mentioned above. We also have a fridge in the garage for holidays or overflow when entertaining. That has a top freezer which does hold a lot of stuff but you can't ever find what you need. For that reason I like the compartments in the SZ freezer. With the shelves and roll out shelf (can't recall if there are 2 or one roll out I'm not at the Florida house right now) it keeps things tidy and easily accessible. I can't speak to other fridges that your considering. However the SZ keeps perfect temps both in the freezer and the fridge section. The KA temps move up and down. I'm constantly having to adjust things to keep them from being to warm or too cold. Recently I was gone for some time in FL came back to this house to find the pepsi cans had frozen blowing the tops off and spraying pepsi all over the interior. After traveling all day, I did NOT enjoy having to take the entire fridge apart to clean the mess that was everywhere. Personally, I don't like the FD fridges. I think having to open 2 doors to see whats in there defeats the purpose. I know a lot of people love them. It's definitely the In thing . I've never cared about what is in. I buy what I like and what works for us and I don't care about reseale who knows what the buyer is going to like; if they prefer a FD then they can change it out. The only advantage I can see with a FD is if your aisle way is narrower than you would like, opening one door instead of a wide door would be beneficial. Check the cubic feet. From the website it looks like the sub zero is significantly bigger but not sure I understand why! I am a bit obsessed about cubic feet these days with 3 growing boys!

An appliance salesperson told me how they measure fridge capacity...apparently SZ measures total volume in the fridge whereas Liebherr measures usable volume (they don't include the space shelves and drawers take up). I don't know if this is true but it may account for the difference in measurements.

Well that is irritating! How are you supposed to compare between brands? I have been going under the assumption that the 15.5 cubic feet I have now is not nearly enough so I am looking for something significantly more than that . . .

Thanks for the responses so far. I probably didn't explain why the leihberr is 'bigger', but for me it is because 2/3 of it are refrig/biofresh space. We use the freezer for ice, ice cream, and the occasional fish that we catch. So as far as usuable space FOR US the liebherr wins. I think it is a wash For overall space as the dimensions are relatively the same.

The Liebherr sounds like exactly what I need. I need much more fridge than freezer - just an icemaker and a place for ice cream for the freezer. We will have an upright freezer in the laundry room as well.

I also love the price! I'll have to check that out!

AJ Madison has the liebherr like you are looking at for under 7k. I thought the SZ 48 was lots more than that but I haven't looked at it myself.

As ordered the difference ended up being $1500. I ended up with liebherr sbs 240i1. Carefully ordering the liebherr off an Internet site as it is easy to make a configuration error. Better to call Trevor and let him walk you through it.

I decided to go with the really big guns and get the sz columns - one for fridge and one for freezer (27in wide ea with approx. 16.3 cu ft ea.) this way we will have plenty of room for his: frozen peas and amy's veggie burritos and hers: homemade chicken stock and pancetta for a rainy day. Guess which one is a vegetarian! I considered the Liebherr but I've seen them and do have concerns about not having enough storage. We don't have the luxury of having an extra fridge somewhere else (nyc apt.) and so this is my one change to go for broke (which is exactly what I'm doing!)

I will be ordering the 36" c culinarian (4 burners plus grill) would love the 48 but then between the range and the fridge there would be no room for cupboards (galley kitchen). Trevor recommended the 42" prestige 1200 cfm to go with the range.
