Lacquered brass hinges on interior doors with unlacquered knobs?
Comments (16)I am using chrome in the kitchen, and polished nickel in the master (although I did switch to polished nickel in there on the door hardware because there was a logical place to do it - can't see brass and nickel at the same time). We don't have any doors in our kitchen really - swinging door to dining room is through the butler's pantry - but I don't have a problem with mixing metals if done well. Every magazine I look through has homes with either unlacquered brass or oil rubbed bronze hardware, and 99 percent of them use polished nickel in the kitchen. It looks great. I have even noticed many (like Brooke Giannetti) use chrome or polished nickel faucets, and then do a different finish on sconces in the bathroom. We did this in our basement - chrome faucet, oil rubbed bronze sconces, honed absolute black granite. I am not a fan of ORB faucets and I think choosing the right mirror will tie it all together....See MoreIdeas for a spring hinge in unlacquered brass for firesafe door?
Comments (12)threeapples, try not to stress about about the not-quite-matching hinges overmuch. I wanted EVERYTHING metal in my house to be antique brass - door hinges, doorknobs, window latches, light fixture, faucets, etc. Somehow, one door in DH's office got installed with shiny brass hinges. Like all my other doors, it has an antique brass doorknob. And, there are two other doors within 6 feet of that office door. I noticed the shiny brass hinges while we were putting up trim work around the doors but figured that, rather than hassle with calling the door guys back to replace the hinges and trying to "be available" whenever they finally deigned to show up, I would just swap them out myself... after we got other, more important, things taken care of. (When a door has three hinges, it's easy enough to swap out one at a time without even taking the door down.) Well, we've lived in the house over two years now and until you posted this, I had totally forgotten all about it. I walk past or thru that door about a hundred times a day and never even notice the shiny hinges even tho I absolutely abhor shiny brass. Hinges just simply aren't that noticeable. Consider how your unlacquered brass hinges will "age" and get whatever option is available that comes closest to matching the aged look. No one else will ever notice and, within a month or two of living in the house, you won't either....See MoreShould adjustable hinges match unlacquered brass handles or...s
Comments (6)You made me wonder so I emailed my builder. The front and friends porch door (walnut) were shipped with odd hinges and those were switched out to unlacquered brass (Deltana). The Kolbe doors still have random hinges. We have several that swing outward so those need special hinges. We may have to stick with the lacquered brass on those in the basement as there is some sort of anti theft mechanism. However, the hinge is actually on the outside of the door so not visible inside, and I expect they will weather pretty quickly out there. I'll let you know what he says. My builder has done this before (unlacquered brass is the rage in high end houses in Atlanta), so he should have some insight. I do know he never (or rarely) goes with the door manufacturer handles - he just gets them delivered handle ready. The same went for hinges on ours - random hinges to be switched later because they weren't in stock when the doors were installed. For our interior doors, they got the hinges we wanted (Baldwin unlacquered brass everywhere except master bath which will be polished nickel), and the door supplier is installing the hinges before delivery. The choice of unlacquered brass certainly complicates things! It is so pretty though - and I think I would do it again even with all the headaches....See MoreOpinions on unlacquered brass door hw?
Comments (2)There is probably some material you can get to give an accelerated patina to copper, you could try it on the brass, since copper makes up part of the alloy. Maybe vinegar would work? Those lifetime finishes are not that bad these days but it might look a bit chintzy next to your aged stuff. I agree, the fake aged stuff looks tacky....See MoreRelated Professionals
