Where do the dollars go?

I'm trying to get a handle on how much I might be able to afford to specify upgraded materials in the new custom home

I want to build. I think it might help if I had a better idea of what percentage of one's building dollars go to which aspects of the house - assuming no upgrades. Can anyone help me out here?

Assume that I'm going to build a 3000 sq foot, two-story home, with 3 bathrooms, wrap-around porch and back-deck, plus a two car detached garage. Assume also that I want to use good quality (not the very top of the line but also not "builder" quality) materials throughout the house and "builder quality" materials for the garage. Approximately what percentage of my dollars are likely to go to each of the following areas?

1) Sitework (site is flat so little or no grading needed but quite a bit of vegetation to be removed)

2) Foundation (slab on grade) and associated labor

3) Roof and associated labor

4) Framing and insulation and associated labor

5) Windows and exterior doors and associated labor

6) Plumbing and HVAC system and associated labor

7) Electrical and lighting package plus labor

8) Kitchen (cabinets/countertops/sink/faucets)and associated labor (appliances will be purchased separately).

9) Bathrooms and associated labor

  1. Flooring and associated labor
  2. Interior wall finishes (sheetrock, trimwork, etc)
  3. Porch and deck
  4. Garage
  5. Builder's profit
  6. Anything else I may have left out!
