Gravel driveway edge
Comments (5)I would consider ornamental grasses as the main plant species since it is full sun. There are some smaller ones such as Blue oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens) that might work. You could include some taller ones as an accent every 8 feet or so. You could also include a conifer or different type of plant as an accent. The full sun next to the driveway is going to require a tough plant. Here is a link that might be useful: Plant groups This post was edited by ja-gardener on Fri, Jan 18, 13 at 22:28...See MoreHelp! Removing Weeds From Gravel Driveway
Comments (8)If you place black plastic sheeting over the whole driveway, and place rocks or bricks on the edges of the plastic, so that it doesn't fly away, you will rob the weeds of everything they need to survive.... oxygen, sunlight, and water. It doesn't matter what season you are in, but spring is a brilliant time to do this, when the weeds are putting their energy into their own growth. After the weeds are gone, maybe 6-8 weeks or so, either re do the gravel drive, with at least 6 inches of gravel, or plant the whole area! Black plastic is not good to use under the gravel, as it isn't permeable, and might create water pooling....See MoreUpgrading a gravel driveway
Comments (2)The driveway is already there. I won’t be spending $30K. I’m thinking $2000 or so with DIY labor. The current driveway and yard work fine. I cannot justify tens of thousands of dollars for this. It is a maintenance job, not a new build. I have plenty of time to work on it. Schedule is not an issue. The maintenance vehicles are not for the driveway. They are for periodic tree maintenance (which has already been done this year) or roof access when needed (depends on what I decide for the roof). Heavy maintenance vehicles have driven all over my yard and none have gotten stuck. I would be afraid to disturb the soil with an excavator - I just want to build up some areas. I don’t mind renting a compactor. I was thinking this would be more like a paver project (which I have done before). The soil is already compacted. I can even out the top and add more material for the driveway part. I priced gravel 1” deep (to go over existing) at around $1500. I priced paver edging at around $300 - I just didn’t know if they were the right ones or if the reflectors would stick to it. I know the driveway will need ongoing maintenance since it is gravel and it rains a lot here. But this is not a critical project - only aesthetic. This is a rustic environment in the woods. It doesn’t have to look polished or perfect - just pretty, like a nice hiking trail....See MoreSize stone for new gravel driveway base
Comments (3)That is a very brutal look for a driveway. More appropriate for a road on the way to a quarry. Not sure you have the budget for this but in the country, a Tar & Chip or Macadam driveway still looks rural but has no issues with washout. Macadam driveway Macadam driveways are commonly referred to as “tar and chip” driveways, though this nomenclature is relatively new. The macadam process of construction is now rarely used on public roads, replaced by asphalt and concrete, but many homeowners still pine for the distinctive texture and appearance of macadam. https://www.thespruce.com/pros-and-cons-of-tar-and-chip-driveway-1398079...See Moreflgargoyle
