why is Gardenweb soooo slow- ONLY Gardenweb...

Why is it that the ONLY website/forum that I use is Gardenweb so very slow?! It takes about 7 minutes to type and preview/submit this! I don't see what I type for about 2 minutes! I had the computer repaired. Gardenweb is the only one that does this!

it is very ad heavy with lots of graphics and videos imbedded and it can really cause a pc to crawl trying to load all of that. If you were to add something like firefox with ad block plus and the easylist subscription that blocks all of that stuff from trying to load you would see it speed up a lot. I see a dramatic difference when I am on my pc with that on it and when I am on my tablet with out that on it. The ads are just over whelming and over laying much of the pages.

In InternetExplorer, enabling Tracking Protection easylist seems to block all the bloat.

I have loved Gardenweb since I started lurking about 4 years ago and frequent many different forums. There is a wealth of knowledge here, and for the most part it is a peaceful and friendly forum environment. There are many many forums out there on the WWW where flaming, profanity, and personal attacks are common. I have enough stress and headaches in my real life - I don't go to the virtual world for more of them. The forum format IS old and clunky though - the Search feature is archaic, it is difficult to post photos, and there is no edit feature for the posts (after they're posted). BUT I like the fact that it is a simple text forum, that way the focus is on the text and what's being written, instead of a zillion little emoticons dancing around, and flashing avatars, and lots of visual clutter that I find very distracting. Although it would be nice if posting photos were simpler (because a picture speaks a thousand words sometimes, esp. in gardening).

Video ad slows down gardenweb

In my experience just having a computer lacking in specs can slow the experience down, especially with video going. I have 3 computers, 1 is a dinosaur that I don't use anymore, 1 is about +7 years old and this one is fairly newer. I noticed the +7 year old one plays video poorly, usually jerky and pausing to buffer all the time (and sometimes for minutes at a time). I attribute it to that older computer only having 256 kb of ram, where my newest one has 2 gb of ram and video plays fine on it. But yeah, Gardenweb isn't too friendly when it comes to all that, they'll load everything up. I remember when I had to use dial-up on GW, every click took like 5 minutes.

The first post, starting the thread, shows an attitude that 1.a.) does not repent or soften anything (unless we project that implicitly). 1.b.) derides Gardenweb's administration. 1.c.) wants to initiate discussion about an excerpt of the email received. And there is more. After 36 minutes, three responses have been posted. 2. The next post from the OP, answering a rhetorical question, was used as an opening to show a little bad behavior all over again. ("ideally... idiots wander free" and once again "questioning" GW's response.) This could have been an opening to show a clearer new position, but instead it showed a will to maintain a hurtful side again. 3. The next new post from the OP, answering a detailed post, was an opening to show bad behavior all over again. Here the victim was identified clearly, and a case was made for crowd justice instead of GW direction. 4. The next new post from the OP, answering a detailed post, was an opening to bring up the analogy with someone being at a party. A defending argument for the approach adopted so far, not a change in any way. Discussion about this analogy takes place. Three posts. About 30 minutes. 5. The next new post from the OP summarizes. -- The next three responses deal with the thread starter post and its attitude. The thread goes quiet overnight. One more post comes in this morning. Now, my post. -- Socially, we all have to take direction when it is given. -- It may be that the thread starter composes thoughts all too quickly. One clue is the title line containing spelling mistakes and a pun that is hard to decipher. Perhaps write out a difficult response in another software first. Then copy and paste. -- I shall now state for the record that many GW readers now know a great deal more about the coolness of a ton of stone than they ever wanted to know. -- Hth

Jeb, I read NOTHING cranky in your post! If anything, I appreciate it because it reminds me to treat others' responses with respect, so nothing but thanks here! You get a gold medal for dealing with yelling customers, too! That's no fun. As for FB, I don't do it for my normal life, but the main aggravation I have with things like gardening is the inability to search for posts, responses, etc. I tried referencing the wintersowing FB page, and it was a rapidly changing site where I couldn't find a post I had wanted to see that was just from the day before, etc. All I could really see were the latest posts, which equated to about what had posted within an hour. Has FB changed and made it easier to find info? katob, still love the blog! Funny instagram, snapchat "story": Last summer I decided I was going to get with it, and figure out those two things. Everybody else, like my teenagers, has fun with it, right? Some of my favorite gardening personalities have sites. I gathered up all the gumption I could get, signed in, and immediately befriended every contact they suggested on one of those apps. I can't even remember which one it was. The next week a friend of my 16-yo told him, "Hey, your mom friended me on <name the app>. Not cool." Cracked me up. I told him to let his friend know I'll probably never open the app again anyway. Side note: I love the correct grammar on the posts, too. You all are "da bomb"! Am I the only one grateful I'm not reading tons of posts from people who either don't know or don't care? We all make mistakes, but sometimes my brain explodes when I read other forums.

I'm on board with this too. Plus, add all the cookies being generated. You would think GW is a subsidiary of Nabisco.

If you have any doubt as to what has been presented here just run CCleaner followed by clicking on GW. Watch the bottom of the browser window as all the dedicated webpage items load.

Thanks for the ad block plus and easylist subscription reminder, Raven! I started noticing in the past month or so that GW was literally eating up 85 to 100% of my CPU power. I saw this post, installed ABP and the easylist subscription and my computer is back to normal :-)

I had not noticed gardenweb being slow or bloated. I do use AdBlockPlus though, wouldn't want to have to browse without it, I would of course but... wouldn't want to have too. :)

I also use Ghostery to supposedly thwart some of the numerous tracking scripts, although I don't really don't know how much they would otherwise slow me down.

I also allow NO cookies by default, make exceptions only for those I'm willing to allow. But I guess that's neither here nor there, esp. since I have to allow at least gardenweb's 1st party cookies.

With Linux I use Iron 7.0 Browser and the Gardenweb windows open so fast the monitor slides back. :-)

I also run Fanboy subscription too. I can't remember why, but I know it was for a good reason as something like this I don't experiment.

I've been experimenting since I made that above message.... turned off fanboy and saw nanner ads here... reenabled it and turned off easylist. No ads anywhere that I have noticed.

Looks like fanboy maybe is better than easylist. Only place easylist seems to block that fanboy doesnt for me is my yahoo mail - when I empty deleted or spam folders.. that folder backgroud wallpaper area?? becomes large advertisements. Other than that.. I dont think I've seen ads anywhere.

Sorry it took mw so long to respond- but getting to Gardenweb page became impossible until yesterday.
Now, there seems to be no problem with Gardenweb. I did not download the Easylist because the link you provided says it has been removed.
Whatever made it not respond is gone for now...

Not sure what you mean about easylist being gone, I just clicked the link and went right to the page for it, and the link for add easylist to adblock plus is right there too. If you don't have any of the subscriptions added to your adblock plus you are not getting much out of it.

I have no idea why you are seeing that because the page is indeed there and working fine, I have used the link on 3 computers to check. Here is a direct link to the easylist
Add EasyList to Adblock Plus

or you can do it from with in adblock plus add filter ("Tools" -> "AdBlock Plus Preferences..." -> "Filters" -> "Add Filter Subscription...") select easylist from the list apply ok.

Choosing a filter subscription

I know some people do use easylist and fanboy together however there in the directions from the creator they do state not to use those 2 in combination.
"As a rule of thumb, you should not use filter subscriptions with overlapping competencies. For example, using EasyList (mainly targeted at English-language sites) with an EasyList supplement for your region (like RuAdList for Russian sites) is fine. However, Fanboy's List (another list with main focus on English-language sites) shouldn't be used in combination with EasyList."
