Can metal sliding-tub-door-frame be removed from tub?

I have a cast-iron tub with an old-style metal-framed sliding glass door. I really, really want to remove the whole sliding glass door, frame and all ... it's old and you can see where it's affixed on with lumps of whatever, to the top side of the tub and the tile walls at each end.

I would be replacing it with a new sliding glass door in new metal frame ... and also would be having the whole tub and surrounding tile enclosure reglazed in a different color. So part of my question is whether the areas under the wrenched-out sliding tub door frame can usually be sanded or coated so it will end up looking OK, perhaps just with having to replace the column of tiles where it's affixed on each side.
