redo old cast iron or buy new acrylic tub

we got an old original to this house cast iron tub that needs refinished and needs all new hardware. should i pay 600 to get it refinished or buy the new acrylic slipper with all hardware for 1000

I'd go with option number 3: new cast iron. :)

I just installed an acrylic tub and I'm thrilled with it - it's SO much nicer than the old porcelain monstrosity I had. The thing that everyone notices and comments on is the depth - it's much deeper than anything I could find in cast iron. I was willing to trade the duribility of cast for the depth. I think for resale, you'll probably find people on both sides of the fence, so get what pleases you and take good care of it - a tub in good shape will be a good thing, no matter what it's made of.

Reglaze a cast iron tub or buy a new steel one?

I have the original 90 year old cast iron tub in our house. I remodeled and opted not to reglaze it because of the durability issues mentioned. There are a few nicks and a little thin spot from an old faucet wearing it down. I figure it is character. we did get an antique sink reglazed to complete our suite. In this case the sink was in complete disrepair. I am not 100% thrilled. Even though it was done offsite there are still little imperfections what seem like an errant piece of fuzz under the finish.

Aftermarket tile flange on Victoria + Albert tub OR on cast iron tub?

Has anyone had any experience putting an aftermarket, field-installed tile flange on a Victoria + Albert limestone resin tub? Our situation is that back in 2008, we ignorantly had an old, cast iron, alcove tub put in, that does not have a flange on it, to be used as a tub/shower combo. The contractor told us that the tile setter would seal it so that it wouldn't be a problem. Unsurprisingly, now that I've learned more, it turns out that it was a problem and we ended up with significant water damage behind the wall and into our bedroom on the other side. We didn't have the resources at the time to redo the whole tub/shower, so we fixed the water damage as best we could from the other side and just put up a second shower curtain against the wall to keep water off it. Then, a couple of months ago, we had another leak from corroded plumbing, which led to more water damage, so we're finally looking at pulling out the whole thing to repair the damage and finally replace the tub with one that has a flange. I thought I wanted another cast iron tub, but I just got introduced to the Victoria + Albert limestone tubs, and I really like them. But they only have one alcove option with an integral flange, the Kaldera 2, and it's 60x32, whereas our space is 60x30. They do have a 60x30 Kaldera 1, and the costumer service person at Victoria + Albert told me it's not available with an integral flange, but that I could buy an aftermarket flange to put on it. She did not have any recommendation for what kind of aftermarket flange. I'm a little nervous about more water damage at this point and really don't want to put something else in that's going to end up being a problem again. Do any of you know if putting an aftermarket flange on the Kaldera 1 would really be a viable solution? And if so, what kind of flange we should look at? OR, could we just put an aftermarket tile flange on our existing cast iron tub? Would that be waterproof? Thank you!

Is it an unusual size? I pulled up faucetdirect and they have 7 cast iron tubs (Kohler and Toto) that range from 450 to 725.

Is this a clawfoot or slipper, barredrock? I think gbsim is assuming it's an alcove tub, in which case it's hard to see why everything that would work is so expensive unless it's a very odd size.

i would like a basic claw foot in cast iron, and if the price was right i really want a slipper, the cheapest cast iron claw foot i have seen is 1400, so that leads me to believe i need to look at acrylics to get around my price of 1000

I'd refinish the old one. You'll save $400 and you'll have cast iron. IMO it will just "feel" better.

we talked about refinishing, but it was gonna be around 600 and we could buy a new acrylic for 1000

It seems to me then that you've already answered your question and want the acrylic.

Donate the cast iron tub to a local architectural resale charity because someone will see the benefit of refinishing it. We have 2 cast iron clawfoot tubs in our house and we are definitely refinishing.

If your tub's "feet" are nice they can fetch a good price.

Have you read the thread from a couple of months ago? I attached it so you can read some opinions.

The reason I prefer cast iron is because it is authentic and I like old things, especially in an old or made to look old house. I like the solid slick feel of cast iron. Plus it does hold heat much longer. (Someone on the attached thread compares it to cookware.) Unless you are going to have a drop in acrylic that can be insulated or better yet one with a recirculating pump, then I would definitely choose the one that's going to hold the heat. There's nothing I can't stand more than just getting settled in for a tub soak and the water starts to cool only to discover that because your teenage daughter has just taken a shower and there is no more hot water to top off your bath with!
