new computer for son.. need advice

I want to get my son another computer. It will be a refreb (hope that is the right term)one. Both of our computers were used & pretty good luck with them (so far)

$335.. $70 to move from 1 computer to the other.

Here is the stats on it:

AMD aphlon 200

1 gig of ram-new

500 gig harddrive -new

DVD burner

motherboard-new

floppy drive

XP Home(wouldn't want Vista)

high speed ready

30 day warranty

What do U think.. they are holding it for me for 24 hours (23 more LOL)

This should have been $70 to move INFO from 1 computer to the other. You probably already knew that :)

Hmmmmm made another mistake.. That is AMD Athlon.. I misspelled it but again U probably already knew that LOL

which is better.. that or mine which is:
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ I feel like mine probably is.

A much better science project would not involve the plants on the windowsill since the light (especially in winter) will be different since the gloomy days of winter will yield much less light. You are introducing 2 variables you cannot control for, the length of daylight and room lights when the sun has set. I would do the experiment with two different types of light bulds, one for growing plants and another for "white-light typical of most living rooms. I would leave them on for 10 hours a day and make sure the plants were the same distance from the light source. Equally, two fluorescent lights, would workl as well, one with more blue spectrum, the other with more red, etc. I would also not use fussy plants like pointtsettas, any cacti, or ivy. Pothos, small palms, dieffenbachia, and polka-dot plant would be great. You could look at the number of leaves before and after the experiment started and the size of the plant as well. Since it is winter, I would also try to keep humidity up especially if you are using prayer plants or polk-dot plant..which recquire lots of humidity.

Hi ravencajun and silvervista, Thank you so much for this information. I read it and was shocked to see this. I immediately sent this to my son and told him to tell his friend who was recommending it. He has downloaded Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware. I told him when he first mentioned it that Malwarebytes was a great program and he downloaded it but his friend was saying it was better than Malwarebytes and I thought I never heard of it before and that is why I posted it here. I figured if there was something wrong that someone here would know about it. Thank you so much for letting me know about this. I am going to also call my son to tell him that I have sent him the links about this program, so that he won't miss it. Genes, I will also send him the message, as far as his computer is concerned I really don't know what he has but I do know it is a Dell Computer and newer than mine. I will let him know how to find this out if that is he is able to boot up. Right now his wife is having health issues and the computer is at the bottom of the list for now. This has given me a chance to warn him before he did anything. He said that he ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware and didn't find anything but, his friend got on his computer and said he had trojans and something else that I can't remember off hand. The people who built my computer wanted to put McAfee on here and I told them absolutely not and I told them to put Norton in instead. Afterward they started recommending Norton because they found out that it did a better job. Sometimes these computer companies don't give you a choice and that is why I preferr having one made and then I do have a choice. Thanks again for the heads up, it is greatly appreciated. thirdfrt!!!

Vala, I'm not sure what you mean by "just invite them" -- to the wedding itself, or to everything we plan? It's not really for me to invite her parents to the wedding; actually, I don't know who will be the "official" hosts for the wedding itself. We (the couple and all the parents) are all contributing to the costs, and we're all (maybe not so much her dad, at least not so far) participating in the planning, too. I don't know (or especially care) how the invitations read. We aren't planning on paying for anyone's hotel rooms, although everyone will be staying at the same hotel, where the reception will be. As for meals, other than Friday and Saturday nights (and the wedding on Sunday), we'll have bagels and coffee available in the hospitality area at the hotel at breakfast times, but not a "real" meal, except for more substantial food, but still drop-in buffet style in the hospitality area, for brunch on Monday. I feel very confident that that will work out fine, because at the sister's wedding last week, everyone stayed at the hotel, which had a breakfast buffet in the lobby, and everyone hung out there without any problem. In fact, they crossed paths often and were gracious to each other. So really, only Friday and Saturday nights are at issue, and after last week, I really am feeling confident about that, too. I think we are going to get through the wedding weekend just fine and, I hope, feel close with both her parents and their families. We got a really good start last week. I am grateful for the insight and advice you all are giving me. I have another question for AFTER the wedding, but I'll start another string!

Dell tower deal is $369 with 3g/360gb includes vista. Vista is fine and the reason it needs 3g mem.

This is gonna be harder than I though..
I was hoping for one less than $500.. I don't really want Vista either. He is bi-polar & changes aren't good.
I have a shop here in Montgomery I would like to get one from but than it would have to be shipped & no idea how much that is plus who would work on it? That option is out of the question..

Zep any idea what the shipping would be on the one U showed me? What exactly is SE Windows Vista Business / XP Professional downgrade -
What about the warranty? Would it have to be shipped back for repairs?

For both.. how about putting the programs off the old onto the new?

There is only 1 shop in VA close enough to use.. he no longer can drive & I don't know of anyone who will go to the next town for him.

If I was gonna have the shop in VA build a computer what would U recommend the least I should have put in it? I really don't think he will do it for less than $600 or more.
He won't use the XP profession disk we have.
I'm glad my son has no idea what I'm trying to do ..if he did He would really bug me.. this way if everything falls though there is no problem.

What is your thoughts on one from WalMart? Again I wonder what their warranty policy is on repairs is. I'm not really excited about WM.

I'm pretty sure Dell will still build a PC with XP, but you may need to call to order it that way. Their basic warranty covers calls and they'll send the parts to you and talk you through the repair over the phone. You can buy an extended warranty that includes having somebody come to the house to do the repair. I don't know what that costs, but I had that option on a work laptop and they came to the house twice to repair it and got it working within a day or two after I made the call.

you can have one custom built at this site I will give you, they make very good computers and ship them all over, they have been highly rated in PC World and other magazines. You can click on any one and then on customize or configure and it goes step by step you pick exactly what you want from the actual case to the operating system and they do offer xp.
The prices are very reasonable.
I am an AMD person and much prefer their processors but that is your decision, they offer AMD and Intel processors.

sorry I meant to reply about walmart, I bought one of my computers from walmart online and have had no issues at all but they are super about taking anything back and even if you got it from online you can return it to the local store, and other friends have bought computers from there also with good results.

as to who will work on a pc it really does not matter who or where you buy from the warranty will be from the manufacturer and they will have a list of their preferred repair locations or will want you to ship it back to them if the warranty is still in effect. I personally use a small local repair shop when I do not have the time to do my own work, and have had excellent results. I would not use places like best buy geek squad, too many horror stories of reformats for the slightest issue and no backups made, no excuse for that kind of service.

If you buy from a local shop that builds custom computers they will also be the best place to take it for repairs.

a good source for a used pc is your local craigslist, you can go see it and try it out before buying it. I got a super deal on one of my computers that way.
