Comments (6)Now, me, the point of going to a custom woodworker was to get a crafstsman, not a bunch of boxes. So, what is special about you and your family that you want your craftsman to reflect back in your kitchen? (Things like "He could carve our dog Piddle's likeness into all the cabinet fronts!" while a touching tribute, is probably not going to help resale though.) What would, if you went into an old home, would you find built in that was really cool? The auto industry calls things like this "surprise and delight features". What do you do? What do you like? What do you need? Maybe built-in/swappable chopping & marble pastry boards (with spares) that slide into an area of counter. Built-in, drop down ironing boards. A fold-down stool for somewhere you perch but don't want a seat. A drop down key rack. A hidden compartment for valuables. If you can imagine it, a carpenter can probably make it....See MoreFavorite feature or detail in your old house?
Comments (48)I love this thread too! So many beautiful homes! Amber, I just took a look at your photos... such a terrific home! I liked all your bay/alcove windows, your fireplaces and your stairs best! I'd love to see some pics of the exterior. Looks like you have a victorian? Our home is modest compared to many here, but I love the victorian door hardware, and we have a twist doorbell too. The bell is still there but it makes a clacking sound more than a ring most of the time. Needs new inside parts! I also love our heart pine floors, wood work and porch. Maybe I'll post some pics later, just for fun. Hope others will post more photos. I love looking! Cheers, -Kim...See MorePlanning my cabs - what's your favorite cabinet feature?
Comments (30)I assume you're just seeking kitchen cabinet advice on this forum, but you mention that you're talking with the cabinet maker about custom closets as well. We just moved into our custom-built home, with on-site built custom cabinets. For our closet, I measured exactly how much hanging space I needed and husband needed, exactly how much shoe space we needed, exactly how many drawers we needed, exactly how much space my husband's huge T-shirt and baseball cap collection (sometimes I think he thinks he's still in college) takes up, etc. Although our closet is on the small side of today's master closets, it fits us perfectly ... and I had it built so that our clothing collection can grow a little over time. Space was a premium in our closet, so I wanted to make sure we used it as effectively as possible and didn't have too much hanging space when we fold a lot of our clothes. We also took shelves all the way up to our 9-foot ceilings and I keep an three-step step-stool in the closet. So, those are my suggestions for your master closet....See Morebooboo60
