Confused about venting a bathroom fan

I have a 1950s ranch home with two bathrooms that have no ventilation. I purchased two Hunter light/vent combos. Both will be installed were the current light fixture is. It is a direct shot of less than 4 feet to the soffit. I have read about how you are not supposed to vent to the attic or the soffit b/c of moisture issues. I cannot install a roof vent right now and a wall vent is out of the question because they are brick.

Why can't I run the exhaust pipe to the soffit and then out an independent exhaust vent dedicated to the bathroom fan and installed in the soffit that is 4 feet from the other soffit intakes vents on either side? I know there is a risk of moisture ending up back in the attic, but will it really travel out of my bathroom/soffit exhasut and then 4 feet to the left or the right and then back into the attic?

Bit confused at your plan, but I did read this:

Bottom line..you cannot exhaust your fan into the attic...it must discharge to the exterior of your home. The ducts can travel through the attic, but cannot discharge into the attic.

Think you missed something, Tom. She doesn't want to vent into the attic. She wants to vent OUTSIDE by punching THROUGH a closed section of the soffit. That section of soffit is 4 feet from any vents.

FWIW, it is not the optimal solution but it is extremely common where I live because of heavy snow and ice buildup on roofs which can block roof vents; it does meet code, and it is a hell of a lot better than no fan at all or just venting into the attic as so many nimrods do. Our upstairs bath fan is vented out through the soffit because there was nowhere to go in a side wall due to the angle of the roof, going through the roof would have tripled the cost of the installation, and going through the gable end would have made much too long a duct run for the fan we needed to use. (Long story I will not go into here.) Since our house had continuous soffit vents, the vents for several feet in either direction from the outlet were blocked off so the warm, moist air wouldn't rise back into the soffit. There is a special duct outlet made specifically for going through a soffit, it looks like a short (maybe 6" long) cylindrical pipe with a grille at the end. A hole is cut in the soffit, the outlet pushed through from the outside and glued in place. Then the duct is attached to this. One with a screen inside the grille will keep insects from coming in and taking up residence in your attic. Make sure you use insulated duct so you don't get condensation in the duct (and be careful when you open the box with the insulated duct - it's packaged compressed and ours sprang out like those peanut cans with the "snake" inside!).

Thanks all, I finally got access to the condo's message board and got some help from another resident. He said the ductwork was there and said something about a "door" in the fan unit. I poked around inside of it again and lo and behold, a small piece of sheet metal fell off the side of it and there was the duct! The sheet metal piece had a piece of tape on it that I think may have been a hinge, of sorts--so that it would flap open when the fan was on and then fall back over the duct opening when the fan was off to keep drafts out. But a thick coating of greasy dust had kept it from working properly, and also made it hard to see that that's what its function was. The duct opening is only about 1x2", not the big 3" or 4" round opening that I was thinking it should be. It's still not a great fan but at least it's not blowing all of the air right back into the room! And I will have to figure out how to put that flap back on once the weather gets cold, but I have a bit of time before that will be necessary. PS-- no window in that room, unfortunately...

Unless your bathroom is 21' x 21' or equivalent a 250cfm fan is way too much. Bathroom exhaust fans should be sized for 4 complete air exchanges per hour. You begin by multiplying length x width x height to determine the total number of cubic feet in the room, then multiply by the desired number of air exchanges per hour. The result will tell you the number of cubic feet of air per hour that you must move. You then divide the cubic feet per hour by 60minutes/hr to determine the required CFM. By example, let us consider a bathroom that is 10' x 10' with an 8' ceiling. 10'x10'= 100sq.ft 100sq.ft x 8' for the ceiling = 800cu/ft in the room. We desire 4 air exchanges per hour so we multiply 800cu.ft x 4 = 3200cu/ft per hour. Dividing 3200cu/ft per hour by 60min/hr = 53.3cfm. Thus a fan that is rated at 54 to 60cfm would give you the required 4 exchanges per hour.

analogmusicman: Forget about cutting holes in joists large enough to run a vent duct; you could do serious structural damage. Duct to a small soffit between the ceiling and wall that is perpendicular to the joists that goes outside. Disguise it with a border or something if it bothers you.

Usually the grill that covers the fan is on spring clips that will snap the grill up to the ceiling hiding any unevenness in the fan level. Is yours not like that?
