Anyone do a 6" granite backsplash?

We are planning for out 3rd (and final!) bath renovation for this summer. This is our master bath and I am creatively drained, so we hired a decorator to help us make some choices. Well worth the $$ for a few hours of her time, I might add . . . .

She has suggested a 6 inch BS rather than the traditional 4" to bump up the feel in the room. Has anyone done this, and if so, would you be willing to post pics so we can get a feel of what it looks like?

Do you have a picture of the existing space and of what it is going to look like when remodeled? It really depends upon a number of things, I think, whether it will make an impact or not.

We did do a 6" in our kids' bath. It has a full length/full width mirror above it, so the extra height gives some splash protection... We didn't do it in our Master, which has free-framed mirrors...

Your decor makes a difference for the decision I think.

Many people have done this. I am not sure if I have seen examples of having the 4" backsplash removed though. Scroll down to tergar's Fnished Backsplash! post for the latest GW example of this.

JayJay and Bill, THanks for the photos. It helps me think it through! It's hard to imagine mixing sizes, and these photos really help! JayJay--My husband really likes your look, and so do I. I like the mix of 4 by 4 and 1 inch. And those ceramic 1 inch tiles are superb. I might have to save up my $ for a while to afford Sonoma, which I have drooled over in the store. we have champagne taste on a Home Depot budget. On the other hand, hubs just found some granite tiles for under the woodstove (it's VT) for $1 each!! Yay for us! Spent 2 hrs hanging one cabinet last night. Inch by inch...

I'm glad to see these images, folks. On another thread I talked about using paint to unite sections of the kitchen and these photos reinforce that idea. I sometimes find a look-at-me tall backsplash to be a dividing, not uniting, feature in a design. My only concern with a short backsplash is any "Penny Catcher" wide surface at the top of it. In my old little kitchen, the Formica was a 3-4 inch high piece with an inch-plus ledge at right angles for the top. If you walked the room you would find on the backsplash ledge a number of coins, paperclips, lost buttons, pretty stones, singleton batteries, &c. We propped greeting cards and postcards on it also, but as the kitchen shifted, we had a gap at wall and they began to slip behind the Formica. (We found them plus a couple uncashed checks at demolition day.) As long as you avoid the Penny Catcher ledge--perhaps by rounding or planing off the top edge if there's width to the backsplash product--a short backsplash can solve a lot of design needs. And it's economical. Thanks so much for this conversation. It reinforces my hope to get our short backsplash installed by end of summer.

Can you buy the matching "island trim" for the range? I saw that one was available for my range top - kind of looks like a downdraft vent or something. People use it when the range is in an island or sticking out with deeper cabinets.
