Our Build So Far...

Hi All,

I have responded occasionally to others' posts and made a few myself but I haven't shared any pictures yet so I'd really like to now.

The first two pictures were stitched so I could cut out most of the bushes and that's why the back one looks odd.

We are building our home ourselves so it is slow going compared to most others. I can't remember the poster on here that is doing the same and has been at it for three years but I can relate even though we haven't been at it as long yet.

I absolutely love the radius room! That will be the dining room. I already enjoy sitting in there and you can see it still has a long way to go.

We have just started on our shingles and are putting on the Tamko Black Walnut for the poster that was asking about roofs recently.

Thanks to those of you reading this and looking at my pictures. I really enjoyed sharing them tonight.

Photos are always fun!

You really have your work cut out for you, especially with the radius room. It's interesting how its roofline was incorporated into your design. Is the plan your own design?

Wow! Love those windows. Your house looks very interesting.

Just a question...Is using particle board for your roof the norm in your area?

Our builders (NE) still use the regular plywood, because if the roof gets wet (if there is a leak or whatever down the road), the particle board warps/bulges & needs to be replaced, whereas plywood dries better. That's what I've been told.

Of course, the same thing goes for hardwood floors & the laying of regular plywood vs particle board underneath. The builders have completely switched to particle boards. The plywood is too expensive. But if you have a leak on the harwood, everything has to be replaced.

Dduffy, You're welcome. The rain has been a blessing and it came just in time--I don't know how much longer the firefighters could handle fighting fire all day and half the night and not sleeping. I do want to emphasize that even firescaping doesn't guarantee you'll escape fire damage, but it helps. In this week's 40-60 mph wind gusts, it probably didn't matter what you did in an urban area since the wind carried fire from roof to roof. I'd like to say this past week's horrific wild fires were a "once in a lifetime" thing, and we'll likely never see such a thing again, but the truth is that we have several days here in OK every year, esp. in the drier parts of the state like western Oklahoma, that conditions are right for just such a disastrous fire event. That's why I always try to mention Fire Weather Watches and Red Flag Fire Warnings here--because such fire events can and do happen and we are often at risk from them. When the Loco-Velma and Raliff City-Tatums area had similarly horrific fires in 2005-2006, all of us down here in southern OK more or less thought it wouldn't happen again here, and yet, it just did. Although this past week's fires hit many areas of the state, it seems especially cruel that the fires hit some areas that were burned in similar incidents just a couple of years ago. It seems that, in this tornado-prone state, we are increasingly subjected to "fire storms" too. The weather here is incredibly diverse, and not in a good way. Dawn

too funny. I can relate! Only I am the builder too. I am female, almost 50 years old, and I am not a professional builder. do you know how hard it is to hang recessed light cans in a vaulted ceiling? I found out yesterday! I swear...you need 3 hands to do it and I only have two.. So I used my head. Literally....I used my head!! I held the darn can in place with my head, held a nail in one hand and hammered with the other. I am glad no one got pictures. It's just one never-ending huge giagantic project that won't be done for another couple of years. So can I use your rules? they do seem to apply in most instances!! lol!!

Hey DZeigler you are welcome anytime to come for a house tour I know what you mean about building blind. my home email is lmsamuel@comporium.net We are really enjoying the house still doing the "where should we put this and that. But it will come together at somepoint. The one thing we did was eliminate the dining room my husband works from home full time and it just made sense to have usuable space that we use all the time. We made our breakfast larger and it accomdates our casual dining furniture just fine. I have updated the pictures some, still need to add more. Good luck and let us know if you want to see it.

momo3... thanks for checking in! just so happens that lots has been going on in the last two weeks, but it's still very incomplete. For starters, we had lots more digging while the pb's landscaping crew came in and buried some downspouts and dug out the patio and planting boxes, etc....but still no sign of the actual pavers that will make up both patio and pool deck....so PB does a total 180, sends the plaster crew out and lo and behold we were pebbleteched on Thursday and water was added Friday. PB will complete the patio and decks within the next 10 days...NOW HERE'S THE KICKER...the whole family left town for 10 days at the Jersey shore on Thursday, and we won't see the pool until the 6th! It's sitting in the backyard all ready for us and we're not there!!! PB is minding the pool while we're away, brushing and balancing, etc...esp. since he's building the patio all week anyway. Murphy's Law or what? I'll post pics next week when I return....have to check the log to see if you've updated your pics too...hope you're all swimming now!

You are doing a wonderful job on your home! I love your dinning room area. I can see why you are already sitting in there! I would also! It is going to be beautiful once you are completed.

I can not wait to see more pictures :-)

I love round edges in architecture. Rounded windows, arches, barrel vaults, anything round! Looks like it's gonna be a beauty!

pinktoes - Yes, I designed this house.

dabunch - It isn't particle board. It's chip board and plywood close to the fascia. We actually are finding the plywood to be worse than the chip board if it gets wet. We haven't had problems with the chip board so far and it has got wet a few times.

kelntx - Thanks!

lindybarts - I completely agree about round edges! I have four different arches in this house and sometimes I wish I had done a barrel vault. I don't know why but I had never actually seen one in either a picture or in person until I started reading on this site. When I saw it I absolutely loved it! But we already had permits, had been into the build and trusses ordered and paid for by then. Otherwise I probably would have had one.

Nice job, it looks like it has a great flow and leans toward a relaxed home feeling. I love the dining area with the radius room. I feel your anticipation, hang in there, you're doing a great job!
