Carrara Marble in Master Bath - pros and cons?
Comments (56)This topic couldn't be more timely! I am in the process of selling my NYC condo and buying a Loudoun County new construction home. To start with, the condo had marble baths - vanities, floors, shower tiles, wall tiles - the whole thing. I hated it! Looking back, I now know why I hated it. I hated it because I always knew that condo was not my forever home. I was always trying to keep it looking fresh and clean and pristine for "when we sell". That meant that I was always wiping up water from the vanities. If we had guests, I would take every opportunity to go into the second bathroom to wipe up whatever water was sitting on the vanity. This was a constant issue and stress for me and my poor husband who was an innocent bystander to my obsession. One day my cat peed on the bath mat on the floor and the etching in front of the tub freaked me out and I couldn't look at it without worrying about a potential buyer's complaints. One night I put my contact case on the vanity without drying it off and to this day there is an outline of a contact case on that vanity. All this being said, the first person who looked at my condo made me a full price offer with no mention of the barthroom marble! Now that we are building our dream home, I have decided to put in 150 feet of Carrara marble kitchen counters and am plotting for that day In the future when I can afford to redo the builder 4x4 ceramic tiles in the master bathroom our budget requires we get now with Carrara marble tiles and vanities. Long story short, now that I know that this is "my" house and whatever I do with it only has to please me and not some future buyer, I am doing exactly what I want. The thing is that I am a relaxed person who enjoys things that feel warm and homey and used but have an underlying elegance. Marble is perfect for me! I can't wait to have it and enjoy it and appreciate it's characteristics rather than fighting them. Marble boils down to this, if you are going to fight every mark and indication of use - DON'T GET IT it is not for you. Stick with granite or something else that will look brand new in 20 years. If you appreciate a patina and signs of use, then get it and love it....See MorePros and Cons of Attic Ductwork?
Comments (4)like funnycide said if there was a way to remodel ducts to upper story that would help. but if you really want it nice then i would put a 90+ furnace with air in the attic. Can you go on the out side of the house and put a hatch door in get into the attic. i have done that a lot of times. If you vent the attic good, insulate the ducts real good you will not lose that much to the attic. One problem you have if you remodel with one system is if you are saying you have 2350 sq' on both stores, one furnace will not move enough cfm. of air to do a good job. if the house is that large you need to move over 3000 cfm of air between the 2 'story's to treat the air. later paulbm...See Moretowel warmer. waster of space or must have?
Comments (40)HI ms shanyne. lol we keep changing our mind about the tile. My hubby is the one with the ideas. I hope it will look okay but I am a little nervous it might look too dark http://www.ylighting.com/bocci-series-14-1-mini-pendant-light.html http://rbctile.com/series/life/ [http://www.floridatile.com/products/time2_0(http://www.floridatile.com/products/time2_0) the vanity will be in the walnut below by this company [https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-bathroom-contemporary-bathroom-seattle-phvw-vp~1131578[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-bathroom-contemporary-bathroom-seattle-phvw-vp~1131578) the floor tile will be the florida snow tile and that will be on two side walls of the shower. The middle of the shower will be the walnut tile as will the side of the Jacuzzi/ we have not picked anything for the the sides over the vanity and around the mirror. in the separate toilet rom the back wall will be the walnut tile going straight up. the floor will be the florida snow and the walls will be a light color of some sort. over the vanity we will have 3 robern 36 x 24 mirrors for a total of 72 x 36 inches. I might put those bocci pendants on the sides of the mirror or over the tub r both . not sure. the pebbles will go on the shower floor http://www.cooltiles.com/stafp108.html...See MoreIdeas/costs on hardwiring a towel warmer?
Comments (14)If your house is under construction this is definitely the moment to put in a towel warmer! While the walls are open it's straightforward to have it wired in (assuming you bought one that can be wired in), plus it's not a bad a idea to have blocking put inside the wall or align it with studs so that it's screwed in to more than drywall. We figured with kids in the house, the chances that at some point somebody attempts to climb it like a ladder are high. Based on my own experience, I'd guess a charge in the $300 range for the wiring. We had one put in during our bathroom gut-reno, in partly because it sounded like a fun luxury, but mostly we were tight on space for towel bars/hooks, needed to stack our towel hanging as vertically as possible, and being able to fold our damp towels in quarters, hang them up, and still have them dry well is super helpful. I love getting out of the shower to a nice warm towel, and with a baby it's been a nice way to keep the bathroom extra-warm for bath time and very sweet to be able to snuggle him up in a cozy warm towel when he comes out of the tub....See Morejacobse
