Appliance brand suggestions, new home

Hi,

We are building a new home and Kenmore appliances, or an allowance, are included. Included is a 30" double wall oven, 36" cooktop, 36" non vented range hood and a 24" dishwasher.

We can afford to buy something better, but don't want to go crazy. Basically I just want something that is easy to clean and cooks consistently at the temperature it is supposed to. For the dishwasher, something ultra quiet. The whole house will likely be electric, although we will have some propane.

I don't really know the difference in the brands. Any suggestions on which ones to look at?

Just a STRONG suggestion...see if you can get a vented range hood--they're much better!

Seems like people like Miele, Asko, and Bosch dishwashers. Miele's start at about $1000, Asko & Bosch a bit less.

Electric induction ranges are popular. Search the forum for brands.

Ditto on the vented hood, if you actually cook.

It rather depends on what you're looking for. A floor-model SZ refrigerator, I bought from a local dealer at a good price (even after paying sales tax). Our Capital Culinarian range and Modern-Aire range hood insert I bought from Eurostoves as the result of great customer service while I was doing my research (and even with the shipping charges, I saved a nice chunk of money on taxes). Dishwashwer, speed oven and warming drawer I'll by from a local dealer with whom our builder has a relationship and an account. Really a matter of priorities. Many dealers don't even perform their own installations, they just use a local appliance installer. If that's the case, you may save money by ordering your appliances from another source, since the local dealer may not be able to do much for you beyond the initial sale.

guess I am sort of an exception to the list up there.... did not require anything high end, just looks nice and super functional. Needed all electric in the home due to the tightness. Went with the Samsung 3 door fridge (29cf, great fridge...have been using it in our temp place for a few months now), Samsung flex oven electric range (looks promising with the tray to split the oven into 2 spaces for a double oven), Kenmore Elite dishwasher (.48db...needed something quiet), range hood undecided yet, washer/dryer is Whirlpool high Efficiency front loads Duets. Microwave is a standard on the counter one that will go into a shelf built into the cabinets just above counter height (full height cabinet).

Kenmore appliances are not made by Sears, but by the major appliance companies and re-branded for sale at Sears. So you have Bosch, GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool etc all represented by the Kenmore label. And Kenmore also has very cheap things as well as the more expensive things. So to simply say that your package is from Sears could mean a wide range of options. Usually we tell folks that buying all one brand isn't necessarily the smart thing to do, because various companies have different strengths in their product lines. One company's fridges are very good, but washer dryers are very poor, for example.

And I agree. If you are still in the building stage, try to get a ventilation system that vents outside, not a re-circ, which is poor.

To continue what Buehl said, this has come up on the Forum before - new construction without venting. I am always surprised at this! In many parts of the country, the building Code requires kitchen venting on new construction, but it looks like the OP's region does not (although it may be worthwhile to check on that, and make sure your builder is complying). Since the OP's home is in the process of being built, there is ample opportunity to install the ductwork for kitchen exhaust, and most builders do it. It's not a big deal, or a big change to the construction, to do it. Don't let your builder bully you into thinking it is a big deal.

There are so many postings that come up on this forum about people who are stuck with existing construction, or an old building, and do not have the exhaust to the outside. But here is someone who has the CHANCE to install it, so you should. While many people would say that venting to the outside isn't ABSOLUTELY necessary, if you have the ability to do it, it makes the kitchen so much better because you will be able to vent grease, steam, heat and cooking odors.

We would like to advise you, but would need to know things like how big is your family, what is your style of cooking, do you cook a lot, what would you like to spend on your dishwasher, your fridge, etc. ***

Love my Bosch dishwasher. I had a Bosch before, but this one is significantly nicer. I think I just had a basic model before. I love the way the different racks fold down allowing for different size bowls and love the information light. The Bosch is real quiet and I was always opening the door to see if I remembered to turn it on. Now I have a light that shines on the floor to tell me it's on. Also love the GE Monogram ovens with the full extension racks that can be left in when self-cleaning. I also like my JennAir refrigerator better than I thought I would but think I would have gone with the Samsung French Door if they had it in counter depth.

Thanks so much for the responses. The non-vented is what comes on the home specs, but I'll make sure we vent outdoors. Probably wouldn't have done that had I not posted here, so thanks!

Lead Dog - I'm glad we could be of help. You will definitely be happier in your kitchen with outside venting. Since you are going to go ahead and get the ductwork done, I also want to repeat, for emphasis, what I said in the linked thread above: "make sure it's a large enough duct. Most hoods these days require an 8" duct, and some require 10". Don't let your builder install a 6" duct. Given that your builder wasn't going to install a duct at all, he may try to install a small one, so keep an eye out, and make sure it's at least 8"." You should have the duct size specified in writing when you do the Change Order to add the kitchen ductwork.
