Camera card causes Photoshop to freeze

After reading about different card options, I bought a Transcend Class 6 SD card for my new camera. The first time I put it in the card reader to run an image through Photoshop Elements 8 (which, by the way, was just before my computer suffered the malfunction that caused me to post here about the green motherboard screen), the program wouldn't recognize the card reader (a USB device) unless I removed the card. Insert the card, the drive disappears from the screen. Remove the card, the drive shows up again.

The computer seems to be working okay now, so I tried again with the SD card and PE8. This time the program froze and became ghosted when the card was inserted, and I got a "not responding" message at the top of the window. When I pulled the card out, the message went away and PE8 went back to normal. Earlier, PE8 worked just fine with a different SD card.

Oh, and tonight the camera flashed me a message: This card is not formatted for the camera. Is it standard procedure to format a new card before using? If so, could that be my problem? I've never done that routinely.

This card contains a very nice picture of my daughter-in-law. It's beginning to look as though I'm never going to see a larger version.

Formatting is a fairly typical first step but you shouldn't have to do it after the initial setup. Now that you have images on the card, if you format the card you WILL loose the images.

Hard to tell what's going on, might be a driver problem. What happens if you just use Windows Explorer to view the files on the card? If you can get in with Explorer, I'd just copy the images to your hard drive and then use Photoshop to view them. You could also try a friend's computer or take the card to the local drugstore, etc. and see if you can access the images there.

I have had issues with larger cards and my older computer. It didn't like anything over 2G.

This was only an issue when I used the card directly in a card reader.

If I hooked up my camera, with the card it in, to the computer - it worked fine. So try using your camera cable and accessing the photo that way.

graft union should be more then an inch long. I don't meant total cut, but an in up/down the little tree once done. If doing tiny scions it would have to be less. Don't watch random youtube videos and believe the person had a successful graft unless there is a followup video showing it. (watch Stephen Hayes for proper info) Take you knife to a good sharpening person (that you pay for) It should easily slice paper that you hold hanging in your other hand and then push the knife towards the floor. It should easily cut it. If you don't have a local, send it to omahaknife.com. that is where mine gets done. If grafting to potted rootstock, not stressing the rootstock by getting it excessively watered by you or rain. This year I put all my pots 4 inches into the ground to let the earth wick away the extra water. I watered only when after sticking my finger into the soil and not hitting dampness until about 2". So only watered once and then very little. I do mostly whip and tounge, with cleft as a backup for very different size match, or if I just can't cut right.... I do W&T even with not same size. just line up one side.... Grafted the week of April 21st. in Z 5.... wrapped with parafilm then rubber band... watered very minimally.. I marked my crappiest grafts, and even they are growing. In regards to gathering scions. I don't do any of the extra handling mentioned above. I clip them, put them in a ziplock with a damp paper towel. Then to the fridge with a larger bag around the individual bags. They get moved around a bit in the fridge just like everything else in there. I still have apple and pear scions cut in Feb and they are still good. Given the chance I'll still use them and they will grow. (peach and some other won't keep like apple and pear)

we use the same camera! Canon Rebel Xti. Capturing red roses that are true to the colour our eyes see - (Obviously - the camera sees something else!). The only solution I have found is to shoot a lot of pictures in different light conditions - it is harder to find the right light conditions when the rose is still attached to the bush - pick a perfect rose and try taking pictures different places in the garden - in dappled shade, overcast, or in dusk/dawn using blitz or set the light with different foil reflectors you can make a small one from card board and crumpled alu-foil (great on overcast days to create the right light - try alufoil reflectors in different colours too. Experiment with settings like the others recommend - you will get it right - at least with digital cameras we can erase the pics we don't want. Do remember that the "killer" pictures we often see are taking in studio setting where the light and exposure set by prof. photographers do get it right. And then they even photoshop the near perfect pictures on top of that! We Can't compete with that. We will however sometimes get a great rosepicture - but with red roses in their natural place on the bush in different light conditions - very rarely! Sunny/light clouds: No Blitz Sunny + blitz: Dappled shade in very sunny conditions - using the macro setting (kit lens) no blitz: - in the future I am going to bring my red roses to this exact location - use the same settings - that is if I have a beautiful flower that day! ( This is a Tuscany - not a HT): This year I will try to get the red Austins right - they have an amazing range of colours on the same petals/flower - I am tired of the pinkish/mauve colours that are not as red as I see them. I have gotten some better lenses now than the kit lens - but even the kit lens was so much better than any point and shoot camera. Keep experimenting and trying - shoot shoot and shoot...

Hey Josh, Thanks for the the tips, but I hope not to be doing much shooting other than quilts, plants & architectural details. I'm still am looking for work (15 months later, thank G_d for Unemployment Insurance extensions) & trying to prevent Quilting from upstaging my job search efforts. So pix will largely have to keep, it's really to be a vehicle for my Quilt Blog, you'll are invited to come on by for a visit & drop thoughts, comments, critiques, etc.; all are welcome -- ("karenthequilter" (no spaces)). I'm trying to start selling my Quilts as folks have been asking me for years if I sell them. I hadn't been interested in doing so 'til now, & have a larger enough body of works to get started. When you remove a memory card from a camera and put it into a reader, be very careful not to perform any operation that 'writes back' to the card. For example, you may have opened an image into photoshop or MicroSoft's photo viewer and made some minor adjustments. When you went to delete the image, the software asks, "Do you want to save?" If you answer, "Yes", the image gets written back to the card and this may spoil its propertiary format. When this happens, the only solution is to re-format the card and loose all images on it. You may have to, with the card in the camera, delete all images before it will re-format. If the card is so messed up that the camera's software will not touch it, try this: Put the card in the external card reader and delete all images, then see if the camera will re-format the card. Make sure there are no files ledt on the card set to 'read only'. Scrapeing the gold plated contacts is not recommended for two reason: Typical gold plating for this kind of application is about 5 microms thick. Any thinner, and you would be able to see through the plating. Scratching it rubs through the plating and may carry embedded comtaminants to the contacts in the camera. The secomd problem is static discharge. Minute static charges impressed on the contacts can ruin the card. The best policy is do not touch the contacts. By the way, I also use an external card reader to extract images from the card. I copy the images to a hard drive or other storage device and for the lack of a better term, call these my master copies. I do all my editing on copies from the 'master file', keeping the master copy intact and never witting back to it. Thus, if my edit gets messed up, I merely get another copy and play with it. You may want to consider setting the master copy to 'read only'.

I tried opening up the card using the camera, but my computer (which is fairly new) didn't recognize it. Since that didn't work, I think I'll follow Mike's suggestion and take the card to Walmart and see what happens. While I'm there, I'll buy myself a new SDHC-compatible card reader. I think compatibility may be the issue. I hope it's the only issue. :-)

some cameras and also some computers do not take high volume cards, my cannon will not take over a 2 Gig card, also some will not take the higher speed rated cards, be sure you read up on your camera and find out exactly the size, type, and speed your camera will take.
when you are removing things from your usb port are you always using the safely remove icon? if not that could be the problem it can corrupt the card as well as your pc if you remove things with out first going through the safely remove icon down in the right corner by the clock.

My last camera wouldn't take over 2GB, but this one can handle much more. The card in question is 4BG, but I know some people with this camera (Panasonic Lumix FZ35) use up to 16GB. (They shoot videos.)

when you are removing things from your usb port are you always using the safely remove icon?

Yikes--I never heard of this. I don't see anything like that by the clock; I'll have to explore further.

it will only appear down in the sytray when you have something plugged in to a usb port, it has a green check mark on it.

I have seen XP systems where this utility does not appear.

The number one result of failure to use the Safely Remove utility is the on-board files will become read-only and the space cannot be overwritten.

I have Windows 7, if that helps.

I didn't think of my USB hub as a storage device. Maybe I'm using the wrong term? It's just a little plastic thing that sits on my desk and gives me more slots to plug in USB cords. Is that a hub?

When I unplugged it, my system was down anyway, so it wouldn't have been possible to access the safe removal icon.
