Tree is up

Hello everyone :).
You girls have been busy!!! Fabulous dÃ¯Â¿Â½cor as always and lovely trees.
Still battling those nasty flare-ups so nowhere near my usual Christmas dÃ¯Â¿Â½cor this year :(.
I did manage to trap the dear ol husband for a few hours and talk him into helping me put the tree together. It took a couple of days , but I finally finished it.
I lurk a bit these days and hope to someday get back to "normal" and join back in.

dealing w/nasty flare ups...I can relate and feel for you.

It's nice that you got DH to help you with the tree.
It looks just beautiful! I love the fruit and pinecones
you added to it and of course the way you added the
ribbon garland.

Hope when you're up to it, you can join us here again.

MM ... I love all that red ribbon & how you decorated your tree w/the pop of reds! It is beautiful! Also the tree topper bow & bling ... love that!

My philosophy is this: if the tree won't start, I return it for a refund while it is still covered with the guarantee. I don't want to invest a lot of effort into it and have it die gradually over enough time to make it non-refundable. That's a good reason to buy locally. On my mail order plants, I only deal with nurseries with a good reputation. If the plants don't do well, I don't return them because the shipping is often more than the plant is worth. I do give bare roots enough time to wake up. If they have come out of refrigeration, they are often very slow to wake up. Often much later than my resident trees. It's the end of May and my mail order pecans and boysenberries are barely breaking bud, and one mail order grape is still asleep. I'm not even considering being worried about them. They just need more time.

Bill, thanks. We noticed last summer that it was dead but we had a new baby at home and no time for gardening. Ceh - funny you should ask that. The old owners planted three of them along the back fence. The guy was a “landscaper” but I’m not really surprised that this tree was planted in such an unsuitable location. We are hoping to do some landscaping this year out back and will definitely consider making some serious changes - especially if these trees continue to struggle. They had some sort of infestation last year too so I don’t hold out much hope. Any suggestions for other options that would be low maintenance and suitable to zone 5?

A lot depends on how much perlite you have mixed in with the c&s soil. It should be at least 50/50 and look like this - That gives the roots plenty of wiggle room and aeration. Water will flow more easily and there is less soil to retain water. Not using that much perlite is not the end of the world. But a big problem with commercial bagged C&S soil is that it often has too much peat in it. Peat can hold too much water and it can become hydrophobic and actually repel the water. So you might think you are watering the plant deeply and it is flowing through as you want it to do. In reality, it is flowing around the soil mix and not getting to the plant. I think that may be what is happening to your plant. Since so many problems start with the roots, I would unpot the plant and see what is going on down there. And this would be a good time to remove all soil from the roots (this should always be done with a new plant) and give it new mix. Take pictures and try (again) to post the plant and roots for us. If your roots and soil mix look good, we'll try plan B. ;-)

Your tree is beautiful!

So nice that you were able to get DH to help. Mine won't lift a finger, let alone carry anything up the stairs, or put an ornament on a tree!

Sorry to hear you are dealing with flare-ups.

MM, your tree is beautiful and I'm so glad you had time to
share it with us. Decorating is not a guy thing normally.
Better give DH an A for helping put up the tree tho.
Our DD's husband is wonderful when it comes to decorating
inside and out. I think it's because she doesn't care about
the indside. He does it for their DD.

Hope your flare ups stop and you start feeling better. We've
missed you.

Hi MM. I've missed you here and so sorry to hear about the flares. Sending good thoughts and prayers for them to ease up and let you get back to having some fun with us. Not to mention dealing with real life stuff as well. Flare-ups stink!!
As for 'normal', that's just a setting on the washing machine I've decided.

Your tree is just STUNNING!! And you got DH to help!!
Give that man a big hug, and then let me borrow him next Christmas please. :o) He can stop at Candy's on the way. Maybe he could give our's some lessons?!
