Please do not install HiJackThis for your friend unless you feel sure she is a competent computer user. That can be a very dangerous program in the wrong hands. It is a program that is better when installed used and removed only when the need arises.

Regarding the rest, you have it nailed I would suggest. However as many programs like these are months old you might consider grabbing the latest definitions for the Avast, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. You could even leave the last one off untill she is online as Superantispyware will certainly take care of business for her.

I am going to tell her not use the Hijack This program unless she has a problem she can't solve with the other programs. I have given her the link to this forum and told her to register if she needs help I also gave her my username so she would recognize me on this forum. I have been telling her about the forum and told her that help is here , she would need to ask after she registered for it.

I would not advise installing hijackthis on the pc, you could leave her the info on how to get here should she need us and even leave her a cd with the program on it but NOT put it on the pc, the risk of it being used improperly is just to much of a risk. She would likely have to go re download if she needed it anyway so she has the latest version we do not use any older out dated versions so it is normal to request each person go get a new version if and when they need help and hijackthis is needed.

The other you are good to go with just make sure she knows to update each prior to running the full scans and to do that weekly I would definitely also add spywareblaster to that list and have her update it weekly and enable all protection no scans to run.

My other suggestions would be the secunia tool to check her pc for any other items that would need updating like java, flash etc.
Secunia Online Software Inspector that is the link to the online version but on that page is the link to the personal version you can install on your pc if preferred.

and if she does not have firefox I would install that also so that she has at least 2 browsers on the pc and suggest she use it instead of IE.

and of course get all windows critical updates

The only reason a user should install hijackthis is if asked to do so on a malware removal forum under the supervision of an expert.

HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself and a computer unable to boot.

I have downloaded all the programs set up files. She has not installed any thing yet as I haven't seen her this weekend. I only see her on school days when she walks to work at the school lunch room and her kids are with her. I will tell her not to install that program but to leave it on the CD until she may need it for diagnosing a problem,I have also given her a link to this forum as well as another forum I frequent. I told her to register first and then she can ask for help if she needs it.

I will tell her to leave the Hijack This off her computer until she may need it. I will help her with it as far as I can by telling her to copy and paste but not to delete anything when she runs it. It is a diagnostic tool not a cleaner as far as I can tell.

If money is tight for your friend, you should look on Freecycle.org for your city, and see if you can get her some free speakers (and even other stuff, like a printer or scanner). This is a web site where people can ask for or donate things for free. I've had very good luck using it for both purposes. A lot of people have extra sets of computer speakers and other gear sitting in the attic, and would be happy to have the stuff go to a person, rather than to a landfill.

My friend's money situation is not so bad, her children's fathers pay child support but she gets paid once a month from the local School board . She recently started working at the school as a lunch room worker. I told her that Walmart has a really inexpensive pair of speakers for about $10.00. My speakers on my computer were bought at Walmart when I got my 1st computer in 2002. They are still working , have not had any problems with them.

My friend is up and running with her computer! I went over to her house on Sunday afternoon and helped her get the programs I gave her installed. I had to show her how to enlarge her font size so she could see it with out her reading glasses. A friend of her's gave her the computer but didn't clean her information off of it. My friend is going to write down the names of all the programs and I will help her weed them out by deleting or uninstalling programs she doesn't want or need. My friend is 23 years younger than I am and I am glad I could help her.
