Try a different channel on the modem ??
N's better connection so along with that comes faster connection and faster network and farther range. But try changing your wifi channel.

What you can do also is simply uninstall / reinstall the driver from device manager, right click choose "uninstall" then reboot the computer, windows will reinstall the driver for you. This can be helpful sometimes if there is corruption in the driver file.

I'm guessing that the different data rate transfers between G and N would make a big difference?

Also, should I look for something other than the 2.4ghz N adapter (phone in between) .. 'assuming' that there is something different?

USB wifi dongles are notoriously crappy. Top name brands can be awful, and lesser known brands even worse.

I'd bet the problem has nothing to do with G vs N but rather either some piece of hardware isn't functioning properly or the signal is interrupted by obstacles or interference.

Can you put this PC with the dongle in the same room, or nearby, where the router is? Is the connection any better?

Do you have a laptop, or can you borrow one, and put it where the poorly functioning PC is? Does it get a good connection or a bad one?

The problem and why I am upgrading to N is because the pc with the G adapter is too slow for video streaming (54mps G) compared to the N (300mps).

I could live with the 'sometimes' connection problem but want a higher rate of accepting broadband speed.

The G is strangled at the 54mps rate.

My router is N so i want an N band adapter.

Also the new N adapter is dual band 2.4/5.0 GHz and will prevent most interference from other appliances.

(The other pc is only about 20 feet away in the other room .. line of site)

A true HD video signal takes, at most, about 8 Mbps.

With 54 Mbps G wifi, a good connection provides 15-20 Mbps.

A G signal can therefore easily carry several HD quality video streams at the same time if your router can handle the traffic (many, especially cheaper ones, can't). Few internet sites broadcast a true HD signal. Probably most of what's on Netflix tops out at 3-5 Mbps, for example. With that example, a G signal could carry 3-5 different Netflix sessions at the same time.

If you have a signal travelling a short distance with no walls in between, it's what I said the first time. The problem isn't G, it's some piece of hardware or interference.
