question for mongoct and bill vincent
Comments (18)Thankyou therenee...my parents really love the shower...I came up with the in-wall cabinet idea when I remodeled my small bathroom in my home. I even made a recessed towel rack on it because the bathroom was much smaller...it looks like this: At my parent's home, we put in a 2x6 wall there instead of 2x4, to have more usable space inside the cabinet...at my house, I still had more room than the newer homes, because of the old lumber that really was 2x4 and because we went with a little bit thicker sheetrock (5/8) on that wall to help with sound insulating...See Moremongoct, I love your sink!
Comments (17)cambreno, It's not painted. It's not quite as dark as it shows in the photo, but it is a deep red-brown. Painting a floor? I'm not a professional painter and I've never painted a floor...but hey; -clean the floor, wash with tsp to clean and degrease. -sand to get a uniform scuff. 150 grit would be fine. -thoroughly vac or tack cloth to get rid of the dust and debris -Prime. Use an oil/alkyd primer. I Always use alkyd primers on bare wood, latex can raise the grain. Not a big deal if you prefer latex. You can tint the primer to make paint coverage easier. If painting the floor red, tint the primer gray. My generic primer tint is yellow oxide. Let the primer fully dry. -light scuff sand, very very light scuff sand. If you sand and your paper is sticking or gummming up, the primer is not fully dry. You'll get a talc-like powder when sanding dried primer. You just want to knock off any dried dust bumps. If you used a latex primer and the grain was raised, you'll need to sand a bit more to knock the grain down. -vac, then wipe down with a barely damp cloth. -paint, you can use latex or alkyd or even a porch paint. -second coat of paint. -Your choice, but for durability you can urethane the floor. Gloss urethane is more durable than satin. If you want a satin finish you can do a coat of gloss then a second coat with satin. The hardest thing to do will be to control dust. So you'll want to minimize air movement through the room while your painting, etc. For priming and painting, I recommend using a roller, even a 4" mini-roller, for applying the paint to the wood. Wash the roller first, then dry, that'll get rid of any roller lint being planted on your floor. Then backbrush with a good quality brush in the direction of the wood grain....See MoreDoes Your Master Bathroom Cabinet Have That Hole For A Chair?
Comments (29)Mollie, The sink is a 30" Kohler Memoirs. It's actually the top piece of a 2-piece pedestal, but it works just as well the way I installed this one. Since it's a pedestal top, the bases of these sinks can be slightly warped, so it may not sit perfectly flat on a flat countertop. Some may need a bit of modification to the countertop to compensate for the warp, or just shim it and the shims will disappear when it's set on the countertop and siliconed in place. It doesn't protrude too far into the cabinet below, but still, to maximize storage, I made the drawer under the sink in a "U" shape. The cutout of the "U" houses the sink and the drain tailpiece. It's a nice sink. Large bowl, and I love the wide flat rim around the bowl. Tom, I built the cabinet boxes and set them on a platform framed of, if I remember correctly, 2x6s set on edge. The front of the 2x6 platform was held back about 9 or 10 inches from the front of the cabinets. So the "hole" behind the toe kick is about 9" deep. I painted the face of the 2x6 platform black to hide it. Our bath floor is wood, it gets a once-over periodically with, maybe once a week or so with one of those little swivel-headed sweepers on a handle. If it were full-depth I could see dust bunnies accumulating back there, but no, with it being partial depth the sweeper can get in there and gather whatever has collected. But still, it's not any dustier than the other non-traveled areas of the floor, like the floor at an inside wall corner that gets no foot traffic. Comments (1)It can be installed that way. Kohler will say "no" because it's not designed to be used in that type of installation. You'll just need to lay out and cut the properly sized hole in the countertop so that the inserted top sits flat. You can use a piece of plywood to get your rough cutout size, then slide the cut ply on top of your countertop and trace the cutout. Here's a shot of my countertop with the cutout, this was for the large memoirs top: Do understand that the underside of the top might have a bit of warp to it. I shim for level, then bed it in a healthy bead of silicon caulk full full support and adhesion....See MoreMongoCT
