dark vanity, marble top - need tile flooring design help!
Comments (15)In my new master bath, I have an espresso vanity, carrera marble counter and we did our floor and shower in 12x12 tile that looks like porcelain. I have to say - it looks AWESOME! Anyone that I tell that the tile is actually porcelain (including my builder who builds VERY nice homes) is shocked. So, I got the marble look with porcelain upkeep. I'll try to post pictures soon - my mirrors just got mounted yesterday and now they need to put up our vanity lights. Oh yes - I don't have my window treatments, so I have paper over the windows!...See MoreHelp with flooring to go with carrara marble vanity top!!
Comments (12)motherof3: I am building a cedar shake cottage style. It is a little more formal then a typical cottage but we are building in southern Maine on the coast. (We only have a ROW) Can't quite afford frontage. This marble is going in our (kids) or guests bathroom. I still say kids even though they are all married and relocated. We are doing a white vanity with bead-board, the honed carrara marble top with undermount white sink and a 12x12 tile in gray with bluish streaks going thru it. I have seen the carrera marble in capes, colonials, and even farmhouses.(I am a retired real estate broker) Now a days I really believe it is do what you like and anything goes....See MoreCarrera Marble Tile Discoloring
Comments (38)In addition to Creatives great advice, I would guess Its preslope issues under the "Hot Mop"......A timely continuation of this thread as I am installing A similar hex in my current clients shower. The best thing anyone that wants a tiny hex or any marble shower floor can do is Use a thinbed ( surface applied or Topical ) waterproof membrane. This eliminates a mortar bed that can retain water long term in the event the preslope is inadaquate. You live in the land of the hotmop and along with the hotmop comes a handoff issue. Where the hotmop guy comes in after the carpenter and before the tile guy many times .....there really is no great way to preslope with lumber (yes it can be done) but often times it gets skipped.... now whos to blame?? Im sorry to see you have issues, it looks like a nice shower, if you do resolve to tear it out, request a flood tested "Topical" waterproof shower and be present when the water is drained from the flood test. The inspectors never watch for that........and its a new thread on houzz weekly especially with marble.... In this shower you are seeing A skim coated Surface applied membrane, when the marble gets wet it dries out very quickly as there is no Mass of concrete and sand retaining water ( yet it still requires a proper preslope ). Hope that makes sense - best...See MoreEtching carrera marble tiles
Comments (2)"The tile store said not to seal the marble,"???? Whaaaaat? Hmmmm. Somethings henky. Marble REALLY needs sealing. The sealing won't change the gloss level. The sealing prevents STAINS from things like urine, toothpaste, shampoo, hair dye, etc. It also allows the marble to keep an even colour distribution when wet. It doesn't stop etching (like water droplets hitting the surface)...it stops COLOUR transfer. Many experts suggest sealing marble tiles BEFORE they are installed and then MULTIPLE TIMES afterwards (before you use the space). Which is why I think the advice above is a bit wonky. I think you need to speak with a STONE expert...not 'tile' people. Tiles are porcelain/ceramic = basic approach to maintenance. Marble is stone = very SPECIFIC maintenance needs = needs a stone expert to let you know how to do this. Maybe Joseph will pop by with some suggestions...he deals with with counter tops, etc, all the time....See Moredianalo
