Short cuts on desktop

I have X-P, SP-3 and Outlook Express.

I have been trying to put various links on my desktop, some will arrive at the desktop, a few others will not. What determines if one can create a short cut or not.

are you meaning links to webpages so that they are live clickable links directly to that site or do you mean shortcuts to programs that are on your pc and you want to be able to access them easily from the desktop?

And what process are you going through to try to accomplish this?

Hi raven,
Sorry for not being more specific. I am talking about the links to the webpages. The way I do, once I am on the page I want to put on my desktop, is to go to File, Send, Shortcut to desktop. Most of the time that works, however, sometimes it does not.

I also agree with dsledge. I have aerated most every year that I have seeded. The couple of years that I did not, were miserable failures due to heavy rains that completely washed the seed away with a couple of days. I had to completely reseed in those years - a huge PITA not to mention $$$. I just put my seed down yesterday, and due to both time constraints and a tight budget this year, decided to forgo the aeration as we are not due for any rain this week, at all. I plan to water appropriately with my sprinklers, to get the seed set properly. I may even walk the yard in the bare spots (I have several - our summer was just brutal). If you have the time and money to aerate, I highly recommend it. It has always worked best for me. I am keeping my fingers crossed this year.

If you use Internet Explorer for a browser, go to the page you want to make a shortcut to and right click on the page..there will appear a list of options and one will be "Create shortcut" about halfway down the list

New neighbor cut my vines on fence too short....

The vines are not massive and unruly since they are in heavy shade for 45 years or longer. How can the vines not be massive and unruly if they are over 45 years old? I am severely allergic to Carolina jasmine, even though I love the flowers and their fragrance. Not only am I allergic to the flowers, but I am also allergic to the mold that grows on the dead parts of the vines - I cannot go anywhere near those vines without a horrible attack of hay fever. You could easily be wrong about who the inconsiderate party is. If you had a tangerine tree overhanging into my yard, that would be a different story. I used to get tangerines from my neighbors in Venice, and they would get figs from my tree that shaded part of their patio. It's a good thing they liked figs, however, as they can be very messy. I think you are best growing vines on a trellis that is placed in front of your wall, so that the vines do not grow over it. I consider Carolina jasmine a pest, no matter how much I want to love it.

The style of pruning will depend on your climate, size of plant and vigour of the plant, and what you're trying to achieve. It's true the plants need leaves for photosynthesis and convert light energy into growth and flowers. And yes if you cut flowers on short stems it will leave more leaves on the plant for photosynthesis. For a newly planted bush you should only deadhead to encourage the bush to grow bigger quicker. People who cut off less leaves will have more flowers sooner BUT the flowers are likely to be borne on thinner stems and not long and straight which is what I want for quality cut flowers. If you cut down to strong stems the new shoots will take longer to grow before they flower but you'll have long strong stems, and the flowers are generally of a better quality but less in number. So if you only want garden display then deadheading is fine. If you want long stems for cutting then you need to prune harder. Also remember I am in a hot climate and my plants are on fortuniana rootstock so I can expect a lot of vigor from my plants. If you are in a cold zone and you don't have roses grafted on fortuniana then I wouldn't suggest cutting them on long stems all the time or else you can weaken the plant.

Why don't you simply save such pages as bookmarks? If you want you can even set up one bookmark folder specifically so you have these pages all in one place, rather than cluttering your Desktop with a bunch of links.

What a good suggestion, I'll do that. My desktop is very cluttered with icons.
Do all websites allow one to bookmark/put their site on the desktop?

Here is what I am going to recommend. To get to any page, you are going to need to open your browser, so I am just suggesting that, each time you have a page you want to get back to, you bookmark it within the browser rather than creating a link that may or may not work on your Desktop. You can create special folders very easily in any browser to keep it organized to your liking. Also, if you want to sort the bookmarks, you can arrange and alphabetize things as you add to the list(s). By having the links in the browser, it will be much faster than returning to your Desktop each time you want to go to a site, and you will be sure you will have a workable link this way. Once you do this, you can get rid of all those disordered icons on the Desktop. Does this make sense?

What browser are you using? And do you need any help setting up bookmark folders?

I have a link in my favorites, that goes to a 'myShorts' folder on my desktop.
When I save misc links I open myShorts and drag the link into that folder. Simple way to save maybe interesting links without categorizing.

And if you want to clean up your desktop, make a new folder, place on desktop, name it short cuts, and drag your shortcuts to it..and your desktop, will be cleaned up and all in a folder, then just open folder, pick the one you want...but yes websites, you like should be on your favs/bookmarked list.

Personal chice is a wonderful thing as it makes the world go round. It just seems to be a lot of effort that depending on the method and configuration might save one mouse click.
