Help replacing OTR Micro w/ vent hood
Comments (1)Removing an OTR microwave is a matter of removing a few screws. Two screws removed from the cabinet above will have the front of the unit falling into your hands. The rear is held by a backing plate. There may or may not be a latching mechanism holding the rear, but usually you just pull the OTR loose from it. Then removed the backing plate from the wall. Usually the hole from the vent, if it actually vents to the outside, is rectangular 3.5x10". You'll need to find a vent that matches. Vents are usually hardwired, microwaves are not. Hence you would need to make a pigtail for the new vent to reuse the recepticle that the microwave was using....See MoreReplacing OTR microwave with range hood?
Comments (13)No personal experience, sorry. All I can do is speak generally from the viewpoint of someone who uses the range (and hood) quite a bit. My wife and I have an Italian "designer" hood. It looks pretty spiffy, but if I had it all to do over again, I would have gone less for the looks and more for the effectiveness and ease of cleaning. I would have gone for a more restaurant style underside with baffles, a more pronounced "hood," etc. I would not even consider a hood such as the one you named. Nor would I entertain the purchase of a hood with glass or any exposed surfaces on the underside. Everything under there gets greasy quick and I don't want to worry about trying to shine stainless steel in that area. I want to use a heavy grease cutter in there, put as much of the undersides in the dishwasher as I can, put it all back together and get back to cooking. Here is a link that might be useful: range hoods...See MoreNeed to buy a range, OTR Microwave/hood, and dishwasher - help...
Comments (0)We are going to start the remodel of our kitchen soon and are researching appliances right now. We need a new slide-in range, microhood and dishwasher. We cook mainly Indian food - so we get ALOT of use from the stove; we hardly use our oven (in fact, I think I've used it like 2-3 times in the past 3 years). Unfortunately, I don't have the budget to redesign my entire kitchen to fit a good cooktop. Can you guys recommend a good slide in range that can fit our needs? Also, I need a microhood and a very good dishwasher - we run almost 2 loads a day (1 baby and 1 toddler...go figure...)....See MoreRange Hood to OTR Microwave - Vent Issues
Comments (2)1. Buy a pair of tin snips. 2. Buy a section of 3.5x10" duct and fabricate your own manifold. 3. Make a fully dimensioned drawing, find a local sheet metal fabricator and have one made. 4. Enroll in a full emersion "being smarter than what you are working on instruction" and come up with an additional solution to add to the discussion....See Moresecond45
