Kohler shower doors -- yea or nay?
Comments (12)We went to Portlnd Glass, the only glass shop in my rural location, to look at shower doors yesterday. They had Century doors for shower/tub enclosure. We opened the doors. The were noisy, and did not move as smoothly as the Kohler doors in the nearby Lowes. The header looked almost identical to the Kohler. They do not offer true chrome, it is an anodized chrome "finish" on aluminum, again similar to the Kohler doors. Honestly, they did not look, work or feel any differently than the Kohler doors did, but the price including install was $865 plus tax. Holy cats! We asked about a price without install, but the saleswoman couldn't give us one, she asked for a phone number to call us with an "estimate." We declined and went down the street a bit to Lowes to look again. A very similar model with nicer-looking handles was $335, and Lowes would install for $285 for a total of $650. Seriously, I cannot imagine the Century door delivers over $200 of additional value over the Kohler doors. I like to support local business (all the plumbing except handshower for my job came from a local supply house), but this seems a big stretch. We are on the fence, we may stick with a shower curtain for now and poke around Overstock, or may try the Kohler. Thanks for the feedback all. Edit: I should add that both doors were 1/4" frameless clear glass with a coating to enhance cleaning. This post was edited by mabeldingeldine on Fri, Feb 1, 13 at 8:13...See MoreHelp! Comments (4)Thank you for your reply. Actually, the wheels are in motion already. Our contractor (who installed the door) called the showroom, who called Glasscrafters. They are fabricating a new door for us. Are you saying that it is not safe to use in the meantime? The showroom guy said we should just put a piece of tape over it so that we don't accidentally touch it, but that otherwise we can use the shower....See MoreKohler cast iron shower pan and frameless sliding shower door-doable?
Comments (10)Enduring- thanks for responding. I had seen your shower- it turned out just beautiful. I wasn't sure if in your research you'd explored a sliding glass door or not. To answer your questions. One end of the shower is on an exterior brick wall. The other is flanked by a custom linen closet surrounded by tile with the edges grouted. It's not coming out. If I had no other choice but to do doors, I'm pretty sure I'd have to remove tile on one or both ends and add the blocking- not something I'd like to do if I can avoid it. Likely I'd just have one door and a fixed panel on the other- I'm pretty sure the toilet clearance wouldn't let me do two doors like you have. Though I see your point about having a fixed panel- I can't drill into the shower pan so that wouldn't work either. Hopefully some of the glass guys can give me their opinion about using epoxy to secure clips on the bottom. Thanks again for your help- much appreciated. Comments (4)Also, people say that bar soap leaves more residue. I don't know if it's true but we switched to liquid bodysoap. We ( I ) don't clean it daily or wipe it down daily- probably weekly but it does clean up easily. I heartily endorse the dawn with magic eraser. None of these are original to me but I found them on these forums and they work....See Morepetepie
