Confused about horizontal range hood baffles
Comments (4)Hi Texas Gal, My hood is the RA0236SQB-1 model, a chimney-style that seems to be phased out in favor of a newer model. Overall, I'm very happy with it, although it may not mean much as prior to installing it last April I had no active ventilation in my kitchen. After the rotary switches failed and were replaced (within the warranty window), there has been no issue with this hood. I also don't expect any, as it's a simple, mechanical appliance, a fan driven by a brush-less AC motor installed in a steel box. Having sad this, I think that you're looking at a different hood: http://www.koberangehoods.com/product/RA-028SQB-WM-1.html. If that's right, then you're talking about a different animal. The depth is only 19.5", which means poor effluent capture. The baffles look different too and I couldn't find a picture showing the underside so it's not obvious how much is covered by baffles. Did you look at the CH-122SQB-1 model? At least it's 22" deep. Cheers, P.S. How does one send private email via gardenweb?...See MoreReal life cleaning of hood--baffles or mesh easier to clean?
Comments (4)We have a Tradewind 1400 cfm 54" wide hood liner with a remote blower. There are 3 baffles. I clean them each week. It takes less than 10 minutes to clean them in the sink. I do not put them in the dishwasher as they are really large...note the size of our hood liner and it is simply easier for me to spray them lightly with degreaser and then brush down and rinse and replace. I never need to clean any other parts as there are none ! None...every single thing goes up and out. I have never even had to wipe off the light covers or the wooden surround except for dust. Lest you think we don't use the hood , believe me we do. Lots of stir fry and deep fry . The baffles are really a mess each week...a great thing as it proves that the HOGS are going where they should . Please look at the Tradewind link and talk to them. There are a couple other folks on GW that have purchased their liner due to my comments and they are also happy with theirs. We have had ours in hard use for 7 years now so I can tell you truthfully ours looks like it did when installed. Here is a pic of the liner. If you click there are lots more in the photobucket albums. c http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/appl/msg0921322624387.html ( link to a discussion I posted and pics ) Here is a link that might be useful: Tradewind liner...See MoreBaffle or mesh filters for a 400 CFM range hood?
Comments (4)While a film of grease is expected on the fan blades, generally any accumulation is thrown off onto a nearby surface. This is why baffles are commonly used in commercial hoods -- to capture the larger particle size end of the grease particle spectrum before it condenses on the ducting, or is thrown onto the fan housing. Nonetheless, in commercial cooking conditions there is still some grease extraction at the blower, and commercial (usually up-blast) blowers have a drain for removing what is captured. In a residential application, given a reasonable hood setup with appropriate filtering, the rate of grease build-up in the ducts and at the blower (roof blower say) can be expected to be remarkably low. Indoor grilling or high duty wok cooking might lead to some measurable grease at an external blower. In commercial circumstances where environmental considerations force capture of a larger part of the grease particle spectrum, commercial hood systems employ sequential filter systems and a blower capable of the desired flow rate at the pressure loss of the stacked filters....See MoreI'm trying to acquire a new pro range hood. Comments (48)@opaone: your numbers, while still higher than my estimates, are at least within an order of magnitude, which in this business probably is reasonable correlation. I agree that this could rise to a significant concern with 10 people really cranking away in a poorly ventilated room. So we're on the same wavelength. @spurpura: you are correct in that I've not invested in air quality monitoring devices or hired PhD's to test my house. But my calculations are grounded in simple physics. The only assumption I have made is in the estimate of CO2 production during exercise, and that was from an academic sports physiology laboratory, authored by a PhD and published in a peer-reviewed journal. If you have figures showing that CO2 production during exercise is roughly 10 times higher than my estimate (which is what would be needed to support your observations), I'll await the citation. There are really only three possible scenarios: You are measuring local concentrations of CO2, presumably close to where you are exhaling. Your PhD consultants and their equipment are wrong. There's an exogenous unidentified source of CO2 infiltrating your exercise room. Enough of that dead end discussion. But...as to your original question, I think you're on the right track. As noted upthread, our 1200 cfm hood runs through a straight run of 10" duct, about 25' upwards, with an attic-mounted Fantech LD10 silencer and FKD10XL blower. It measures 60db (LCS weighted, ear level, roughly 4' from baffles) on high. So we hit the mark you are shooting for and I expect your setup will too. Good luck!...See Moreweissman
