Laptop dvd player question

I've got an Acer that I've had since Dec 2009. Lately when a movie is put in to play, every 2-3 minutes or so, it's like it gets hung up ... and things get repeated 3 times and play will stop, then go real slow then speed up real fast to catch up. This is so aggravating when I'm using it to play an exercise video!

The first time I noticed it was on a rental from Redbox and I thought that it was their dvd. But it has happened every time since then. My hubby suggested getting a dvd cleaner and trying that but I wonder if that would help; because upon starting also, it makes a strange sound and won't take me to the WinDVD screen ... I have to eject and try again (the last time I had to do this twice).

Should I try a cleaner first or take it directly to be looked at? Thanks!

It's a mechanical device, if it's making a strange sound it's most likely a mechanical issue. A cleaner would probably not help much.

You probably do not have enough memory (RAM) to run the movie without it having to stop to build a buffer. The movie runs faster than the computer is able to create the image onscreen.

What model and how much memory does it have?
If XP click Start
click My computer
click System
Now look near the bottom of the new window for your installed memory.

So with the activity light coming on we now know the power is there on both drives. Normally after that period of slower flashing it would/should start to flash much quicker indicating it is reading the CD but you do not get that. Try checking the Device manager click Start click Control panel click System click Hardware click Device manager Now in this new window look for yellow exclamation or question marks. Double click on any if they are present and see what it brings up. If no yellow marks then look for and double click on DVD/CD ROM drives, click the various tabs looking for error messages or it telling you the device is working properly. When you try a CD are you using a music CD or some software program? Try a music CD then open Windows Media Player and see what happens when you try to play the music. We might be clutching at straws here but if you exhaust all avenues before spending your money on a repairman it might be worth it.

I think some of you guys missed the question - OP is ripping audio book CDs and experiences long rip times with SOME disks. OP, I've ripped a lot of CDs (large music collection) and have encountered this from time to time. You're right, sometimes it's because of scratches. Sometimes it's because a PC has limited memory and prior actions in the current on/off session have used too much of the limited space. Sometimes, the ripping software just doesn't like the CD. Sometimes, nothing seems to work. My suggestion is to turn your PC off, turn it on again, and try using a different program to rip the disk that seems stalled. Try Windows Media player. If no better, download and try Media Monkey for the rip. If no better, then I'd guess it's either a difficult disk or a drive problem.

oh well you have every type of connection on there you could get and you only need ONE! IF you have an HDMI cable that goes from your TV to the DVR player that is it that is all you need disconnect all those other cables! the HDMI is video and audio all in one cable that is the advanatage of HDMI one cable and the highest quality. The other options are only to be used if you are using devices that do not use HDMI. So plug the HDMI cable to either the DVR or the DVD depending on which one you want to use, then use the the red and white RCA jacks on the tv (it does not matter if there is a yellow one beside it that yellow is for video not audio so you will use the red and white only) plug your headphones red and white male cords in to those red and white female out jacks on the tv. That is all! leave all other cords out of the equation. As long as all of your devices that you want to connect to the tv have HDMI use that. IF your tv did not have HDMI then you would use the 3 colored ones yellow white and red that carries video on yellow and right and left audio on the red and white. Ok try that just the HDMI cable and your head phones. BE sure that the source input on the tv is set to HDMI if that is what you will be plugging the DVR or DVD into, if the source input is not selected on the tv you will not be getting the signal. This statement right here is very baffling -a 3-prong (yellow, red & white) from the TV (video out) to the three middle (audio out) jacks on the DVR. you state you are going from tv out to DVR out you can not go from out to out there has to be an IN for anything to work. But you do not need those cables so remove them completely from the equation. HDMI out from DVR to HDMI cable IN on the tv period. Headphones base unit red and white male plugs into the TV red and white female audio out jacks. Period

I'd say it depends most on the source material. A Blu Ray disk has greater capacity than a DVD and so for a program or movie of a given length of time, it has room to store a higher definition (more clarity and sharpness) version compared to a DVD. That is, IF the production company chooses to put a higher definition version on the disk. An old DVD movie, for instance, will most certainly have a lower definition image than a newer movie on BR. You can buy a 6 foot long HDMI cable from Monster with all kinds of impressive (and nonsensical) specs for $59.95. Or, you can buy one from cables.com for $5.95. Or, you can get one free in the box your player came in. Or you can use a component connection with RCA plugs. So long as the cable, the plug connections and the plugs are in good condition for all the possibilities, neither you nor your TV set will know there's any difference between them.

You should be able to play DVDs fine with that amount of RAM on a fairly recent computer. I don't think this is something that will be solved by cleaning. It sounds more like a mechanical problem with the drive. Did you get more than a 1-year warranty (or buy from Costco, which provides a free 2nd year of coverage)?

Well, I had it checked out and was told that the dvd player will need to be replaced - will be $89+tax. My hubby had paid for it in Dec 2009 as an anniversary gift, but he had his dad pick it up for him (Walmart), and of course, didn't get an extended warranty. Doesn't that just figure?!

Also, within the last 2 weeks, I had to purchase a replacement adapter (to the tune of $70) as, of course, the other one quit working. When it rains it pours...I wonder what will be next.

If you could do the job yourself, you would save a great deal of money. Laptops are not the easiest to work on, but replacing the DVD player should not be that difficult. Use Google to search out directions for doing this and also purchasing a replacement unit.

You can get an external USB DVD drive for around $30 at various places (I found some at newegg.com for example).

Genes--If that's directed to me, I didn't really look at a brand. I just went to newegg, navigated to the external DVD drives and sorted by price. Here's a link to what I found
