what floor goes with beadboard?

We love the look of beadboard for the bathroom walls, but aren't sure what tile to use on the floor. I'm not very fond of the traditional hex or pinwheel (or any other small black and white tile combo), but we want the floor to look right combined with the beadboard. We have a small floor area (about 25 square feet, including under the vanity). Any advice or links to photos would be much appreciated!

For background, it's a small guest/kids bath with a shower/tub combo. We're thinking (but not certain) about white glossy subway tiles on the shower walls and mahogany-colored vanity and cabinet. This is the bathroom that our kids and all our visitors use.

we did the hex without any color tile accent. If its the black & white you don't like maybe that will work. I personally love the all white hex with beadboard. Here is our guest bathroom.

Actually, it's all that grout that bothers me. I look at our floors now (from the 30s) and they're so dirty! I wanted to use very large white matte tiles, but it's a really small room and my husband thinks that would clash with the beadboard, which we both want. So we're trying to find something else that might work.

Yes I am definately painting. The beadboard is 4 feet up the wall but I have 12 foot ceilings in some parts of the bathroom. Bathroom isn't that BIG but it is high in some areas so paint for sure! I am not a blue person - though my ceramice tile floor IS ocean blue and I know that grey/blue would compliment the area but I am much more a tan person. My shower is done in earth tones with blue jewel accents to kind of tie in the blue floor but I really don't want blue to be the focal point of the room. I am so torn b/c I used BM Sierra Hills in my master bedroom and LOVE IT but when I swatched the wall in the bathroom with this shade it turns pinky beige. So this color is NOT right. What I am going to do is submit my photos to BM and have them select the shade for me. They did this with my bedroom and did a wonderful job - you tell them what you like etc - or what shades didn't work, etc. At one point there was a bathroom on this gallery that had dark navy walls and stark white beadboard. VERY pretty and for a guest room it would be perfect for me, I am not a blue person though for a master bathroom if that makes sense! I have a feeling I will lean towards light grey on the walls - will pull out the carerra and accent floor and definately my shower. But I am having BM pick the shade!!!

BM now sells it's original oil-based alykd (in a petroleum oil base), a water-clean-up alkyd (in a mineral oil base), and latex paint. They tell me that the water-clean-up alkyd is almost as good as the oil-based alkyd but I'm skeptical, so I went with the original oil base when I painted the inside of my exterior doors recently. The original oil base is supposedly going to be phased out (it already has been modified so much to eliminate VOCs that it isn't nearly as strong as the oil paints were "back in the day"). The water-based alkyds will remain available. This info is all per the owner of my local BM store and current as of 2 weeks ago when I bought my paint. As far as painting latex over oil goes, you CAN do it, but you need to prep well and use a bonding primer. I've been doing it (my whole house was oil based on the trim) for a couple years now by washing the oil paint on the trim to remove the dirt/grime, painting one coat of a bonding primer like Zinsser 123, and then painting 2 coats of latex topcoat. It's been fine. If you put latex directly on top of oil with no primer, it won't stick. The PO's did that in a couple of the bedrooms here, and I was able to literally PULL most of their paint off with my hands (I had to use a scraper in a couple spots, but for the most part, it came off in big sheets!) to get back down to the oil paint, which I then primed and recoated with latex. Yeah, that wasn't fun. So if you're gonna put latex over oil (or even the waterbased alkyds over oil), I'd definitely spend the time doing a coat of bonding primer -- better safe than sorry.

Beadboard, Door Trim, Baseboard - What order?

The following steps are for stained trim/beadboard. Painted trim/beadboard is covered in the last paragraph. In your case, installing the door trim first is step one. To get the base molding to match the door trim, it will need installing second, unless you cheat by planing the base molding thinner to allow it to match the door molding when installed over the beadboard. That will make the base molding thinner and it will be different looking in width from the door molding---but the surfaces will match. That generally is not acceptable to most people. That poses a double problem, however. That problem is how to get the edges of the beadboard to match the edges/bottom of the door and base molding. One way to eliminate this problem is to cut rabbets in the door and base molding. A rabbet is a groove cut into the side of a piece of wood and forms a notch the whole length(or as much as needed for the beadboard on the door molding sides) of the wood. That allows you to fit the edges/bottom of the beadboard in the rabbets and elininates any gaps. The only gaps will then be in the gaps created by the pattern of the beadboard. A colored caulk can be used to fill those if the moldings/beadboard are stained. If you are painting both trim and beadboard, it is much more simple. Install both moldings first. Then install the beadboard. Then caulk the gaps with a paintable caulk, prime, and paint.

I love floor-to-ceiling beadboard but I do have to caveat it in that I don't think it works well in some circumstances - some house styles just don't play nicely with something as vintage in flavor as beadboard. Lowes has some pretty cool wall panels that looks nothing like that ooky fake wood paneling we all grew up with, they're in the special order section by the beadboard stuff. Tena - you can do one of two things with your porch ceiling. You can order extra-long beadboard planks and trim through a good lumberyard (I think you can get 16') but I warn you they are a stone beyatch to handle and waaaaay more expensive than standard length. Or, you can simply stagger/interweave the ends of the shorter 8' planks the same way one would with hardwood-floor boards, rather than just having all the planks end in the same spot. That's the way it was done on my 100+ year old porch. If you're planning on painting the beadboard rather than staining it, you can fill the butt joints with an exterior-grade wood putty before painting and they won't even show. Remember to back-prime or back-seal the boards before installing.

We did the Octagon and Dot tile...but instead of black which I didn't like, the dot is navy blue. I love the way it turned out.

I think a plank porcelain wood look would be stunning. A black slate look would also be pretty.

I was just thinking. How about a gingham pattern done with a few shades of vitreous glass tiles. Those types of tiles are inexpensive, and a place like susanjablonmosaics will make the pattern up for you. So fresh and pretty too. You do any type pattern you like. A small scale floral would look pretty too. Just work it out on graph paper, and enter it into her site.

I have Carrara-esque (actually Goia) 12 X 12 tiles with out beadboard, which we laid in a running bond pattern.

We are doing the Delray from Tile Shop- carrara basketweave- with our beadboard and white subway tiles! It is around $12 a square ft.

We're doing something similar to what na praha did, except ours are a white and gray faux marble-ish tile from Home Depot - 12 x 12 ceramic with light gray grout. The tile is in, and the beadboard will go in monday. The shower is glossy white subways with light gray grout. We're using an espresso-colored vanity and mirror, which will also be installed monday. I'll post a picture as soon as it's in! I think if you don't like all those grout lines, you might consider a larger marble or white tile.

How about a tumbed marble look. I also like the white tiles with blue dots. Classic look.

We're doing beadboard with a light beige marble floor (and inside the shower). I have no pictures because it's not up yet, but I hope it looks good. Will post some photos once it's done :-)
