Any easy to clean bathroom fans?
Comments (2)I recently got around to cleaning a Panasonic one. Wasn't too bad at all. A few screws to take the baffle down then a few more to remove the plate that holds the motor and fan wheel. One or two more screws and the fan wheel was off and soaking in a sink. Not bad at all....See MoreBuilding an easy-to-clean bathroom
Comments (33)We have tile baseboards in two baths; they are easier to keep clean than the normal baseboards in the other two baths. I wanted tile behind the boys' toilet in our last house, but we couldn't figure out how to work with the design of the tile, the way we were using accents. Oh well. And Mommyto4boys, you'd better take a head count...mom to 6 sons? BTW, another "FlyBaby" here, changed my life. Swish-n-swipe every day :)...See MoreBathroom Tile Protruding out n Cleaning Problem
Comments (4)It looks like the wall has deteriorated behind the tile, which isn't unusual when water has had places to get behind the tile, especially if the apartment was built many decades ago. What is peeling off is probably a silicone caulk that someone put over the grout lines to attempt to reduce the water infiltration through the grout lines, is my guess. My experience with my old house (built in 1929) is that there is no fix for the tile after there is so much water deterioration of the wall behind the tile, short of removing all of the damaged wall, replacing it with cement board or whatever is the most up-to-date wall product these days, and then re-tiling. I'm sure you're not going to do that work for a place you rent. What we did before we bit the bullet and replaced the tub/shower walls, is to neatly duct tape white vinyl shower curtain liners to the wall to prevent further damage. Put them up high on the wall but make sure they cover all the way down to the top of the tub. The liners are cheap---like $3-$5. They keep the wall dry. And you won't have to look at the crappy walls if you get white liners rather than clear. It's not an elegant fix, but it will work for 3 months. In any case, old wet walls deteriorate and it shouldn't be something that the landlord holds you responsible for. Not sure how to clean it for now. Elbow grease, scrubby sponges, and household cleaner with hot water? Looks like it will take some doing....See MoreEasy-clean bathrooms--why isn't this a thing?
Comments (7)Easy clean is a thing in my house ... and it's going to be even more a thing in my new house! Specific thoughts: - Avoid white-white and black ... go with something that won't show every bit of dirt. - Yes to shower curtains instead of glass doors. Yes to minimal grout lines. - Put your shower niche in a pony wall so it isn't visible from the rest of the bathroom. - We're planning to attach a half-bath to the master ... only one toilet on the first floor to clean. - Tile to waist height behind the toilet ... because men. - Choose light fixtures that point downward ... they can't catch dead bugs or accumulate dust. - Pick the same towels for all your bathrooms ... they'll wash together and it won't matter which bathroom they go into. - Plan for closed storage; an awful lot can go into an 18-24" linen tower. As part of your storage, include a spot for a hamper. Plan spaces for your hair dryer, extra toilet paper, etc. ... if you don't plan, it'll be left out on the countertop all the time. - Avoid freestanding tubs and choose a tub filler that includes a sprayer (easier to clean the tub). - Take your vanity cabinet all the way to the wall. Why create a couple inches that're difficult to reach? - Choose a one-hole faucet so you have less to "clean around". If you can't do that, choose a wide-spread faucet rather than a bitty faucet that requires you to "floss" between the pieces. - Keep it modest in size. Large bathrooms (and duplicate fixtures) require more time to clean....See Morepricklypearcactus
