What's wrong with my new monitor?

I just got a new LCD monitor, a Viewsonic Optiquest Q9. It arrived with the brightness and contrast set at 100%, and everything looked way too light and rather washed out. (The latter surprised me, since I thought too little contrast would cause that, not too much.) I've played with both setting, but can't get the screen to look right to me.

Right now the brightness is set at 64 and the contrast at 37. As I type this, the background looks more grey than white, and the words I'm typing are a little pale and a little fuzzy. If I up the brightness, the words get even paler.

On the MSNBC site, the text seems to be in two different colors, with the vertical strokes a reddish purple.

The monitor came with the color set at Native, and I kept it there after trying the other options.

I have the resolution set at 1024 x 768 because my vision isn't the best and I don't want everything to get too small. Is that part of the problem?

My other LCD monitor is a Dell, and the image is great. I don't think I've ever adjusted anything on it.

Have you looked at any of the books you should have received withe the monitor? How about the manufacturer website? Or try control panel, display, choose settings and change the resolution and color display that way. Good luck

Native resolution is usually best on any monitor - you can use windows to adjust the front type size.

You may want to install the driver files for too.

Brandon, thanks for the info on planting. This is new to me, and I just couldn't imagine anything young taking root in the dense soil I had to hack through to dig the hole so amending it seemed to make sense at the time. I can see how it would create an artificial tub now. I guess time will tell if the tree fully takes. I'll try to gauge the soil dampness better. With the sun around here, the surface dries out very quickly. It may well be that I'm not watering enough, though I'm not sure how to judge what's happening down at the bottom of the roots. jqpublic, I'm zone 9 by zip code but San Jose can be in the 8s too. In any case, the apple trees in the neighborhood seem to do very well. (and Ken - don't worry, I'm tickled pink that it set fruit so quickly. I just don't want to kill it!) As DA wisely notes, bigger need not be better. I have a 22 inch screen and love it. However I do not allow too much text type content to use full screen as that is a long way across. I do find it useful to have 2 windows open side by side at times. Plus I have a gadget bar down the right side so mostly use 20 inches of screen If you have a 20 inch 5 x 4 monitor you have much more than screen if you had a 16 x 9 widescreen. This is because your monitor is so much higher, the measurement is taken diagonally. We all thought this widescreen thing was fantastic but we did lose something into the bargain.The biggest gain of course was LCD and doing away with those huge CRT monitors.

Since you have only had the plant a short time, what caused this is probably over now. It doesn't look like bugs. My guess is one of the following, maybe even both. It looks like cold damage. Did it go from the store out into cold air, and ride in a cold car. It's hard to believe this can cause such damage, but it can. If that is the case, it will grow new leaves eventually. It looks like a strong plant despite the leaf damage. It could also be that it got too thirsty in the past. The kind of leaf damage it has makes me think this is a response to watering mistakes made before you got the plant. I believe you would see some lower leaves yellowing too, if overwatering were the issue. Look closely to eliminate bugs. Don't get the soil soaking wet when you water. They don't want the kind of water a spider plant wants. They also like to dry a bit between waterings. I would let it go dry about half way down the pot, before I watered. Is it giving any new growth. That would make me think it'll be fine. Good luck.

Thanks! I increased the resolution to the maximum (as recommended by the manufacturer) and then upped the font size. Everything looks much better.
