8ft or 10ft ceiling?
Comments (27)If you've never been in a room that was badly proportioned due to too-high ceilings, you may not really believe there is such a thing. But there is, and it feels awful. Just very wrong -- but hard to put your finger on why. As a general rule, 9' is safe and comfortable for just about any room size. Higher ceilings can be are nice in large rooms; and 8' ceilings are wonderful for cozier spaces. One trick we've learned in this house is that a small area with lower ceilings at the entry to a larger space really 'opens up' the room with 8' ceilings. Our downstairs hallway has 7'6" ceilings, which we thought was a problem until we lived there a while. But now the 8' ceilings in the kitchen and den at either end feel much nicer, and the 'transition spaces' really function as transitions....See MoreStacked Cabinets to 10 ft ceiling. What is your combination?
Comments (55)Hi Mags...my house is almost at the drywall stage so way too late for the counterhight window but I seriously considered it at one time. I love the look. i did heed the advice of the crank out window. They are casement windows. The architect drew in 3 windows and I gave up one to get more upper cabinets. I hope I don't regret that when it's all done. we (kd) called modernaire and I'm working on a hood. We shall see. Thank you for the advice!...See MoreShould we put 9 ft. or 10 ft. ceilings in a new Craftsman build?
Comments (100)cpartist give excellent suggestions for how to deal with 10 foot tall kitchens, keeping the ambiance Craftsman and attractive. I will note I find 9 foot tall ceilings plenty fine for me, but go with feels comfortable to you. Although I do have a cathedral ceiling in the public part of the house.... (No, my house is not Craftsman). As someone else noted, you'll have to change your door heights and other aspects of your home to go with the increase in ceiling height - and that's not going to be cheap. Even at six foot one, I don't feel cramped in homes that have 8 foot ceilings - I was just in one (probably built in the 60s or 70s) this past Sunday (after months of not being to get out and visit folk very often at all). It was fine. But 9 doesn't affect pricing as much as 10 feet would. Please don't do without upper cabinets. You'll hurt resale, as not everyone is going to want to stop everything and remodel as soon as they move in. Even though I mostly have drawers, the lowest one is always a pain to access anyway.....See Morewhat color should a ceiling fan be with 10 ft ceilings?
Comments (4)There is no rule. Some people want it to blend in with the ceiling color and others want the fan to make a statement of its own. Depends on your house style, decor and fan style. Personally, I dislike fans inside, so I wired for them in the guest bedrooms, but didn't install any. Outside I have bronze/brown fans in the lanai ceiling, but my ceilings are stained cypress so the fans blend in and aren't making a statement. The fans also match the brown/bronze exterior of my windows and sliders. Here you go, a Houzz search for "ceiling fans". Look through and decided if you prefer them to blend in or stand out! https://www.houzz.com/photos/query/ceiling-fans/nqrwns...See Moremillworkman
