Comments (4)What you have is one cable bringing in power and the other cable goes to the switch (a switch loop). By wiring the black from the switch to the black from the power (and the same for the whites), you created a dead short from hot to neutral when you turned the switch ON. This was NOT the the way you originally found it. You probably welded the contacts in the switch together when you turned it on, necessitating its replacement. Turn off the bathroom breaker to be able to reset the main. The way it should be wired, for both lights and the fan to be operated by the switch is: Black from the power cable connected to the white from the switch leg. Black from the switch leg connected to the blacks from the lights and fan. Whites from the lights and fan connected to the white from the power cable. All green and bare copper ground wires connected to each other....See MoreNeed recessed lighting advice for bathroom
Comments (3)I would plan for the lighting to be complementary, not for the recessed lighting to be all coverage: Plan for the recessed lighting to provide good general lighting for the bathroom as a whole, but don't expect it to be in the correct position to light the vanity and the mirror in the way it should be lit. In other words light the bath from the ceiling like you would light a kitchen from the ceiling, enough to illuminate the whole room as general lighting, but don't expect it to be the task lighting as well. Plan the vanity lighting for optimal vanity lighting. This is essentially the task lighting. It should be switched separately. Light the shower separately. Sometimes I like to take a shower in the relative dark, compared to the rest of the bathroom. Sometimes I like the shower light to serve as a night light or for guests to at least navigate in the bathroom. Overlight it all slightly and put it all on dimmers. I recommended switching the fans separately and no lights on the fan. The light they provide is generally pure glare. I am doing a bathroom that is the size of some showers (28 square feet total) and it is still going to have 3-4 lighting circuits and a separate fan circuit....See MoreBathroom Lighting Advice needed - how many recessed lights in 5x9?
Comments (9)Don't do a recessed light above the sink, you will get shadows. Don't do ONLY a recessed light above the sink. I also used pretty glass tile in the showers and it looks really nice when illuminated with 2 lights and dimmed just a bit. Ambiance lighting for when guests use the full bath downstairs! That sounds so nice! Two additional thoughts, not related to the above note: As you plan your lighting, consider your color scheme. If you're going with today's trendy lots-of-white, maybe-some-gray color scheme, light's going to bounce off those stark whites and could feel harsh. On the other hand, if you're using a softer, darker color scheme, those darker colors will "absorb" some of the light; so you'd need to ask whether you'd need more light fixtures. I like to read in the tub, so I definitely plan to have a light of some sort "behind me" for that purpose....See MoreNeed a recessed light layout for bathroom ASAP!
Comments (3)the two should be fine. in my spare bath I have one over the shower and just the vanity light,,,(has 4-60w bulbs). plenty of light. 2 cans over a vanity, plus your vanity light, seems a bit much. example of your size bath (give or take) with only vanity light and shower light two smaller shower lights, vanity light...See MoreRelated Professionals
