What product are you planning on doing for siding? That makes a huge difference.

Either LP SmartSide or NuCedar. Both allow for custom colors.

Just FWIW - I like your columns. I don't like dinky columns on a porch - they look lost. Our architect (who knows what he is doing - lots of awards) specced a 12" column (they are double columns on either side of a portico). I had the same question and he assured me they were right at 12". I do trust him as this is what he does very well - proportion and detail. I think your 10" look great!

My favorite Colonial Revival color scheme is a muted yellow with white trim:

Athensmomof3 - Thanks for the column compliment! I agree, Im not a fan of dinky columns either. I could have easily gone with the 12" once the 10" were installed but pre-installing, I was alittle nervous as some people were telling me the 10" was going to be a bit big. My house is tiny (its only a 28 x 32 foot print) so im sure 12" will be great. The columns actually look bigger in person, but definately in my opinion in a good way. I also went with fiberglass over wood which cost a bit more but have the no/low maintenance benefit and I love them!

Renovator8: That yellow is a great color and im with you on the yellow with white trim but unfortunately, ive ruled yellow/cream out simply because the closest house to me (which happens to be my sisters :) is yellow. Blah. Im thinking sage at this point!

That looks close to what we're thinking of building. How big is your house, how many bedrooms, do you have one downstairs? What type of costs are you expecting to build this?

Killick - My house is about 1,700 square feet. After it was built I also had a little suprise. Because I went with a pretty steep roof pitch (12/12) I ended up with a 3rd story loft. Someday, id like to turn this into a real loft/living space but for now, it will just be a nice attic space. I had no idea I would have such a room up there. I was pretty excited when I saw it. I didnt do a bedroom downstairs as in the end, I decided on 2 bedrooms and they both went on the second floor. I did have the windows off of the dining area on the left side framed out as a door so its ready for me to add on. Someday, ive decided if I need another bedroom ill put a master suite on there. At the same time, I could have easily added a first floor master as there was enough room - my first floor rooms are a nice size and all of them could have been made smaller and not gotten too dinky in order to fit a master in. As for costs, I did a terrible job of estimating as im on the pay as you go plan so basically, as I get the money, I work on the house. Right now, im about a year into it with a couple more years to go :) Hope this helps.

Wow, a loft? I'd never have guessed, it doesn't seem there should be that much room. That's about the size we're looking at, I think we'd need a downstairs bedroom in case we're incapacitated in old age.

I did a few rough mockups in sage and blue but they don't really do your house justice -- your house will be much cuter! On the LP Smart Side site there's a deep blue house with white trim in the Gallery. It is really stunning; the blue really makes the white pop.

I would use the yellow. After I painted my house that color two other houses in the neighborhood copied it and it doesn't bother me, I gave them the color names.

Otherwise, I recommend warm gray with off white trim. I don't believe blue is a good color for this style house.

Killick - Thanks so much on the compliments. The porch is my favorite part of the whole house. If yould like me to email you my architectural plan, id be happy to do so. And ill post some pictures when I finally get the siding on. I do think the size is perfect and love the extra little loft that I got. I think the 12/12 roof pitch combined with the "chubby" footprint (its 28 feet wide and 32 feet deep) resulted in this suprise.

I agree a first floor bedroom is a good idea especially when thinking about long term, aging possibilities. I actually went back and forth on this one and still am not sure if I regret it or not but I always remind myself, when I get to that part of my life, I can always add on.

I actually tried one out this weekend (thanks to your inspiration) but couldnt actually get it to look like siding. So instead (see below) it looks like im planning on painting the typar wrap, lol. Thanks again for these color demos - so cool. Im going to try to find the blue you reference on the LP SmartSide site right now!

I love a gray cape cod house . . . always have. It is the most classic and my favorite for sure. My parents have a yellow cape cod - and I have always wanted them to paint it gray :)

I like the sage. My first inclination was gray for a cape.

The best part of our house, brick, built in 1886, is the large screened front porch. I use it constantly from May-September.

My grandparents had to climb steeps stairs into their 80's and 90's. It got to the point though that grandpa had to set up a bed in the living room. I think it's good exercise to a point, but the body does give out.

Here's a pic of our house, it's a little reminiscent of yours (at least to me, YMMV), it's done in Hardiboard, Dark Moss or something, but the equivalent is BM Tate Olive, with Hardiboard Sailcloth on the trim and Eagle windows in Cinnamon Toast.

Obmezd: you are more than welcome. I used Paint (comes with Windows) to copy/paste in some images of siding that I found online. (The tricky part is finding images that are straight on and not angled.)

I agree with Chicagoan...the grey really works with the style of the house. That is what you see on Cape Cod (the weathered wood shingle color. Now, since you like sage, maybe you could find a warm grey that has a green cast to it...just a thought. I love your house btw...

I'm having the same dilemma, my house being very similar to yours and with driftwood colour shingles. I'm leaning toward a bluish green with charcoal shutters.

Hello-I realize this discussion is super old, but I googled "walk out basements on side of house" and I love your home! We are trying to figure out what we want to do with our sloped land here on Cape Cod. Your Cape would be perfect! Do you still have the plans?

Usually people get in "trouble" for bringing up old threads. But, I enjoyed looking at this one. Especially Lakeeffects beautiful home and color ideas for my own home.

Oh and how the color looks varies so much based on how sunny the day is. On really sunny days, it looks light tan, on more normal days, it looks grey and on cloudy days, it almost looks like a light sage green!
