Gliding patio doors instead of French doors
Comments (16)Oaktown, the salesman who was working with my mom indicated that these new doors have a better air seal /better efficiency than French doors. Of course, when don't sales people say what works for them? You're right about the track. RunnerGirl, I've also lived with no-good apartment sliding glass doors, but these were not the same -- perhaps that's why they've "upped" the name -- they want to separate them in our minds. BeautyButDebtFree -- love your name! Yes, I HATE the swing of my French doors. It's a pain and prevents breezes from entering the house. My mom agrees, and we're both excited to see how these doors work in her house. As for sizes, you'll have to do the math yourself -- after you're sure of your wall sizes. No one choice is going to be right for every house. Bottom line for me: When I went shopping with my mom, I wasn't prepared to be so wowed by these doors. I thought the choices were old-fashioned sliding glass doors or inefficient French doors. These new doors seem to have the best of both options, while removing some of their problems. I'd recommend that any home buyer give them a look before making a decision....See Moredouble or single french door
Comments (8)I have a single French door out to the patio (replaced an old sliding door about 10 years ago); the other side is a stationary panel/window. I like it fine, but in retrospect I wish we had just replaced with a French slider like the salesman recommended. Our room is small, and having a swing-open door really limited our options, though at the time I didn't realize it. If space allows for a double French door, I think they're grand! Our space did NOT allow for a double, and really would have been best left as a slider. Our boys are 8 and almost 4, and they slam it a lot :-(...See MoreSliding patio door or double door?
Comments (3)The major drawbacks of sliders are misalignment and roller wear. The lower weight bearing rollers often wear out relatively fast---sometimes as soon as three or four years with more than average use---opening/closing 5+ times a day. Adjustment is usually fairly simple, as long as the adjusting mechanism is not damaged/rusted/too dirty. And the adjusting mechanism and roller assembly is replaceable. The other gotcha is the amount of light/heat/cold the large expanse of glass transfers. A curtain has to be wall mounted and is cumbersome to open/close to operate the door. Double doors generally do not have any of those problems. The big gotcha with doubles are the room taken when open/operated....See More2 sets of french doors or double sliding patio doors
Comments (23)a few years ago I had Wonderful Windows come out and give me a quote. They said they would have to custom make my door. My slider is 9 ft X 8 ft. My house was built in 1978. The slider in our living area is in bad shape. There is another slider in the master bathroom (of all places) right next to the toilet. That one is smaller....See Moremydreamhome
