toilet roll holders with flap

I would like to know your thoughts on those toilet roll holders that have a piece of flap metal hinged on top to cover the roll. Usually the covers I've seen are shiney chrome and I'd think you'd really notice the flap (and maybe fingerprints) even more. The salesman says it's very popular overseas and helps to control the amount of toilet paper used as the tissues are easier to tear especially if the flap has some weight to them. It's also supposed to keep the dust off the tissues and to allow one hand being used so it's more hygenic. Of course the flap seems to eliminate the question of whether the tissues are placed over or under the roll.

Any comments, does anyone have one and would you do it again? Thanks.

I have only seen these in commercial applications, not at home. Since they are generally a commercial product you could probably get one in a brushed stainless finish.

I have a bath tissue holder made of very, VERY heavy brass that has the flap. I bought it in an antique shop in the New Orleans French Quarter about 25 years ago...and really like it. It adds charm to the water closet. I doubt it is an antique yet it certainly looks and feels like one.

That looks like it holds a tissue box. Are you looking for something similar designed to hold a TP roll? Planning to just put a TP roll in that spot? Use it for a tissue box but store additional TP below? The item you have shown looks like a craft fair or Etsy kind of find rather than a regular store purchase. If you wanted a plain one or something you painted/decorated yourself, it looks like a standard small tower cabinet you might buy unfinished at Michael's or Hobby Lobby with an oval cut into the top.

Hi olychick, yes, more along the lines that it's not spring-loaded. I only want it to hold one roll. As far as I know, "double post" means the typical set up where the roll spindle ends meet a "post". :-) And the spindle is spring-loaded so you can insert it between the two ends. (As different from where one end is open, where you slip the tissue roll onto the bar. ) I use the term because one of the web sites used it to do filtering. Hi patti1954, thanks for weighing in! I think that one is nice looking. I think my DH might veto it though, because of the open end. (I think he has visions of the roll jumping off the spindle and then not wanting to use it after it's hit the floor. He is very fastidious--even more than me!)

I finally get fed up with the wiggly TP holder I got at Pottery Barn. It's just a bad design having one attachment point holding a horizontal roll with constant pulling and tearing. I found this one at Rejuvenation. It costs almost twice as much as the PB holder but it's very stable with two screws. It's also got much more heft and coordinates well with the other PB items in my bathroom. Yes, it was made in China, but it makes the PB one seem flimsy in comparison.

You could try finding some that would work - the back would have to be completely flat. i was thinking more along the lines of one that comes with the adhesive strip, like this or this. I have the stain nickel version of the second one (or close to it, from the same company) and it hasn't budged since we put it in.

We have these in chrome in our remodeled bathrooms. Our friend bought them for us in Asia. I hadn't really realized they're not common here at all, thought it was just a choice of styles. We think it looks fine, although we were fairly indifferent about our selection of toilet roll holders.

The flap on ours is just a stamped metal piece with the edge rolled to create a hinge, so it could easily be removed without detracting from the look of the holder.

Also I've always been and "over" rather than "under" kind of person, so the flap works correctly for us!

I have those. Little Kitty finds it very frustrating, as it keeps her from unrolling the whole roll....
