Hoods- Reporting back on what I found

I spoke with customer service representatives at Miele, Futuro Futuro, and Wolf. I also visited a showroom that had (among others) some Best, Faber, Zephyr, and Wolf. Here is what I got.

Wolf has a low profile hood(some black glass, flat bottom panel)with a contemporary look. It has the same suction design as the "perimeter suction" that Futuro Futuro sells and both the salesperson and the Wolf "ventilation specialist" say that it works as well as the ones with the exposed filters/baffles. In my mind it is possible that it might not work quite, quite as well, but it is likely omparable enough if two companies are willing to use it. (It looks really nice, you don't see the filters/baffles.)

For hoods of any type, specially the ones with flat bottom panels, the placement and orientation of the halogen lights is VERY important. If they are on the surface and face straight down, you are going to get the light in your eyes unless you set the bottom of the hood right below eye level. That's very doable and will increase its efficiency, but if you have another cook taller than you, the hood may block the person's view of pots placed on the back burners. This makes me look more favorably at the FF hoods that have fluorescent lights-- much softer on the eyes.

The salesperson (speaking about the Wolf hood), the Wolf ventilation specialist, and the FF person who answers their phone all gave the same description of how/why the perimeter suction (partially covered filters) works -- creates a curtain wall...

The Miele customer service representative said that they had retired the 36" island model because they periodically do marketing research and found that it was not in high demand (it didn't sell as well as others). That their actions do NOT mean that a 36" is inappropriate for an island. I had thought that maybe cross-ventilation, which is more likely to exist in an island than against a wall, made them less effective.

The difference in noise between hoods with higher and hoods with lower sone ratings is quite dramatic. I mean, take those numbers seriously!

Oh, and unfortunately, the more expensive hoods do look "more expensive" (nicer). But, once you take yours home, the others won't be there for comparison.

This info helps me make my decision. Hope it helps others.
