New here but hoping someone can help..

I have a Dell computer, bought a year or so ago. I've never tried to play a DVD on it until recently. It will play a music cd, will open cd's with photos on them, will play cd's with games, but will not play a movie (I've tried more than one DVD). When I put the dvd in, the blue screen comes up that says Dell CinePlayer. It even lists the title of the movie I inserted, but when I click on play or resume, nothing happens. I can click on eject and it will eject the movie. I've tried to open a movie with Windows Media Player and I get the message that says the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Can anyone tell me why I can't play a DVD? Thanks so much for your help!

I guess I should have introduced myself. I'm Cheryl from Illinois. I'm married, have 3 wonderful sons and 6 grandchildren. You don't even want to get me started on how great they are! :o)

A one year old Dell? Then I'd guess that you have Vista...is it 32-bit or 64 bit? You could try installing the VLC Media player.

You will be able to play anything once you have it set up.

The brass seat is a fairly durable item. If the seat shows no signs of pitting from corrosion or other damage, it should be alright with a new needle. Floats are reusable unless there is physical damage. Floats made of brass (rarely found any more) can develop a leak permitting gasoline to enter. This renders the float useless. Floats made of composite foam are not susceptible to leakage and may be reused if the float is intact (good and solid with no sections missing). Floats and bowls should always be inspected for signs of rubbing against each other. This would be apparent by seeing a scuff or brush mark on the metal surface of the bowl. I doubt you will find any rub marks on your carb. Your carb most likely suffered from formation of varnish from degraded gasoline during its long period of "storage".

You should have gotten the Home Depot to look at it before using anything. They would have made the installer correct or replace anything ruined. Glue coming through is not acceptable and you should not have to clean it up. I installed for HD and Lowes as well as Sherwin Williams and other stores. I was required to carry General Liability Insurance with the store listed on the policy. The corporate offices ALL required this insurance. I would call HD and get someone out there and do not take no for an answer. Go to the store manager or corporate if necessary. Continue up the ladder until someone agrees with you. They truly do want you happy, but only as cheaply as possible. If it has to be ripped up, the installer, or if it is defective the manufacturer, should pay not you. I have seen the problem on another installer's job. The coating is probably ruined because of the glue. I have put down bamboo and never had the problems you discuss. Be aware the installer is going to blame the manufacturer and/or you. He doesn't want to buy the floor. Don't mention the WD 40 unless asked directly. I would hold off doing anything else to the floor until they have a look and decide. Best of luck.

Best Way to Seal Rubble Foundation Against Water and Radon?

I'd like to know where you ended up with this. I live in RI and have the same problem. Bought and old house years ago, now have kids, and of course now radon is testing high. First thing I did was buy a radon monitor. It's called the "Corentium Digital Radon Gas Monitor". You can buy it online for $245. I've had mine for 6 weeks and has told me a lot about the radon levels in my house. Craziest thing is that radon levels fluctuate day to day and can vary a couple of points so the 2-day tests are in my view, worthless. Also radon levels vary seasonally. The best radon test is an average over a year, with a minimum reading of a week. What's great about a continuous monitor is that you can tell hourly if the radon levels drop because of your mitigation. FYI opening windows does work for about a day then they go right back up again; great for summer, chilly in winter. My basement is mostly old poured concrete (more like a rat slab) and I have some open dirt sections. My plan this summer is to take up the old slab and install a proper radon pipe grid, cover with gravel, then poly, then top with new concrete. That should give me a better, drier, basement and also eliminate radon from the slab. I'll pipe it for a passive system and if it doesn't work I'll add the fan. It's unlikely that you or I have a decent layer of gravel under the old basement slab so any point suction mitigation won't work. that works in newer foundations that have the gravel but not the piping. The second thing is a perimeter drain. This will relieve the pressure against the outside wall and vent the water and radon gas to daylight. Radon gets sucked through the rubble walls by stack-effect so I plan to put a layer of poly against the foundation to act as a vapor barrier, then a perimeter drain product by Eljen. DVD's come in at least 2 styles. A regular store bought
one has files on it that look like xxxxx.vob plus other
files.

other types made by friends won't be like that and will
be 'more playable' using VLC player which I believe
everyone would recommend.

I personally don't play DVD's and thus can't help you
much however there's going to be a software requirement
for the DVD player to need for it to decipher how to
manage the *.vob files on the DVD.

Try opening Windows media player by itself and then
open the CD / DVD by typing E: or D: in the Run window.

Once the DVD is 'open' drag it to the WIndows media player.

Or an alternate way is to open Windows player and then
once knowing the E: or D: name of the DVD then 'open'
Windows media player for the DVD and see if it will
play it.

During all of this if you can verify what kind of files,
ie *.vob or other.. ie *.mp4, or *.avi files, this
will help us to help you to play it. I suspect that you
have a 'real' DVD from Blockbuster and are trying to play
it. So the open Windows media player first, then try to
open the D: or E: of the DVD should take you the furthest
in your hopes to play it.

Computers were not supposed to cause us more work. Be
careful to avoid joy and happiness tied to computers.
They're made for work and GD if they aaren't going to
be used for that you're certainly going to H$LL. LOL

j/k -- except I do think we've split off entertainment
from work and computers don't care they cause us
hurt and frustration in our quest for 'fun'.
