Need Some Help for Valentine Tree

After seeing Katy's post showing the candy canes(BTW, welcom Katy.) I was thinking I should be asking all of
you for help. We have trees that we decorate for Christmas and Valentines Day every year on Main Street.
I was hoping to get the Christmas decor off and redecorate next week. Since the tree is outside, I need
kinda weather proof decorations. I even looked for heart plates with no luck. I was thinking I could staple
two together with some tinsel for added bling.

Any ideas or pictures from you talented ladies would be
greatly appreciated.

There's a post, I think it's on the craft forum or here in holiday, someone made big, wonderful red and white mint candies with the clear cellophane on them. Maybe you could adapt and make big conversation hearts or chocolate-covered cherry balls with a big red stem coming out the top? oooooh I wish I lived near you I'd help. How fun!

A bit of advice based on experience.I live on a small lot in an old neighborhood. When we moved in there were two trees in the front yard: a maple and a very old over-grown cherry tree. Our front lot is about 25' by 35'. The cherry tree grew into the crown of the maple and was breaking the fence because it was planted too close. We took out the cherry tree hoping the maple would fill out. It never did. We had a very lop-sided maple that was not very attractive. The maple roots began to tear up the walkway leaving crooked concrete as a tripping hazard and invaded our sewage pipes. Rooter Rooter about twice a year. We took that one out as well. My point is, based on my experience, research how big the tree will get before you plant it. Think about the root system. Will it break any paved paths or patios in the future? Is it too big for the space provided? Living in an old neighborhood, I can really see the mistakes people made when planting trees 20 years ago. I've taken out three on our lot. When I plant a tree now, I research it thoroughly. Especially the root system. We have relandscaped our yard with pavers and I don't want tree roots tearing up the patio 20 years from now. It is expensive and a little sad to have to take out a tree. There is a Colorado Blue spruce in our backyard which I know I will have to deal with one day. I would never have planted such a large tree on such a small lot. One idea is to walk around an older neighborhood in your area and look at what people have planted in their yards. I get lots of ideas doing that. The most recent tree I planted is a Norway weeping spruce and a weeping cherry. I just bought a weeping white pine as well. I'm researching deciduous trees that will only get about 20 feet for a open space in the back yard. Still looking for that. Good luck!

Over watering is more dangerous than under watering. Don't water the plant until the soil starts getting dry. Let the soil tell you when to water. A large tree will drink more water, than a small tree, so the time schedule will be different, depending on conditions. I water my trees every two or three days, if it doesn't rain. But I water every day if the weather is hot, and the soil in the pot drys out quickly. It sounds like your tree is in very bad shape. I don't know if it will survive. Take some cuttings of the tips and try rooting them in damp potting soil, or sphagnum moss. Try to save the tree, by letting the soil dry out some, and see if that helps.

give it full sun. when the leaves are young, you have to protect it from leaf miner. I think spinosad is what's recommended, it's organic i think. I don't spray so I can't remember for sure. they say not to waterlog your citrus, but i've done that with a moro orange in a pot with no drainage holes for 2 years. it's doing fine, but I wouldn't recommend it. every citrus that i've had will fruit in a container, but once I put them in the ground, they stop fruiting for a couple years. try to keep it near the house, the flowers smell like heaven. good luck! sounds like you got a great gift!

Yes, those do appear to be Thuja occidentalis/northern white cedar. BTW, in true taxonomic terms, this tree is not a cedar, that term actually referring to the plants in genus Cedrus. But in any case, even foresters in this part of the world call Thuja o. "cedar", as I've explained here many times. I mention because in say, a scholarly article, it would be imperative to accurately label the plants you happen to be talking about. Here in the Great Lakes states though, and I'd expect in your part of Ontario as well, they're just "cedars" or even "swamp cedars" on occasion. That tree-Thuja occidentalis-is just about my favorite plant in the wild. I'm not talking about landscape cultivars-those range from quite good to quite poor in my view-but the actual species plant growing wild in the woods. I'm very fond of how they colonize new ground-say, an abandoned farm field-and without complaint quietly take over an area. Very impressive plant. Also, of huge benefit to wildlife. One of the benefits provided by the typically thick and almost pure stands of this tree is thermal cover. That is, areas having thick groves of this tree stay warmer in the winter. Don't I know it! Where our clearing/trailer is up on our land is a little clearing completely surrounded by "cedars". We often sit on our deck there in mid-winter, in our t-shirts, etc. Unbelievably warm spot. +oM

Hmmm. The outdoor aspect has stumped me.

There are some outdoor
heart string lights at Target

and lots of

different kinds on eBay.

You can even find LED battery operated ones somewhere, but I think they're rather expensive.

What about using some of those foam sheets they sell at Michaels? They might even sell a pack that's already cut into heart shapes. Use a Paint pen to write words on them that mimic the words on conversation heart candy.

I'll keep thinking.

Yes, that was our kitty you saw in the picture. He's about 15 years old and moves up and down the stairs better than I do. Still, there are times when he won't eat for days and I'm reminded that he's pretty old for a cat. He never got a proper name - just Kitty.

I'm sorry you lost yours. What a hole our animals leave when they go. When my first kitty died, when I was very young, my mother told me that he went to Kitty Heaven. Silly, but I still like to think that there;s a place known as Kitty Heaven.

OA, love the idea of hearts with sayings on them.
Will check it out next time I head to the city.
Might be cute to cut out hearts with the foam and
make chains. Your giving me ideas! No electricity available so will have to check out the different
battery lights if they are not to expensive.

Funny that Kitty goes by just that. I know what
you mean by running up and down stairs. Still
missing my Dear Scrappy, but know he's happy up
in 'Kitty Heaven'.

Roof flashing is 'silver' & about 4" wide (I'm guessing) on a roll ... but easy to cut ... you could maybe cut some hearts of various sizes from a roll of that & punch a hole & hang w/wire ...if you wanted them to be red, you would have to spray paint probably. Or they could be the tree topper! Just a thought...Jeanne S.

Jeanne, thanks, I would of never gave the roof flashing
a thought. It would be nice if we could use our ornaments
every year and those should hold up to our storms.

You'll never believe what happened. We made 65 bows w/hearts today between customers. When we were finished, the gal who works for me walked over to the door and ask what happened to our tree. I thought she was joking since it was there earlier. So I walked over and sure enough, our tree was MIA.

After calling around, I found out that one of the busninessmen decided to be a good guy and haul it off still decorated for Christmas! Sooooo guess we won't be decorating an outside tree this year! Sounds like we have a storm moving in so I best get to bed so I can get up early and shovel snow!

Men!!! Even when they are trying to be helpful, they're annoying.

Was it an artificial tree? Is he going to get the ornies back for you??

I hope you didn't get too much snow.
I don't mind the softly falling snow. I think that is beautiful. It is when it comes in a blizzard that I mind it.

We are supposed to get some snow and really cold temps this weekend, just in time for the Bronco game! :0
