Paper-backed glass tile in shower?

We ordered tile for our new bath and it came in. After getting it home, we realized that the 1x1 glass mosaics aren't colored tiles -- they're clear tiles with colored paper stuck on the back. And they're made in China. I guess we should have been more careful.

We feel kind of ripped off, because these were expensive tiles -- $32/SF.

Are these tiles ok to use in a shower? (vertical surfaces only.) Should we try to return them? Since we had to order them, I don't know how returnable they are. But even if we have to eat our $220, we don't want to install bad tile.

We need to decide fast. Help, please!

Are you sure the paper isn't on the face of the tile? Mosaics are usually done with either the fiberglass mesh backing or have a paper facing that will come off when softened with water after being set. If the paper is indeed on the back, then it sounds like a big factory error that the supplier should correct.

The paper is on the BACK of the tile -- BETWEEN the glass and the mesh. It's not an error; it's where the color is. The glass, we realized, is clear. Is this stuff junk? If so, why is a long-established tile store recommended by our contractor selling it?

Hi there, This is my first time posting in the bathroom forum (been hanging out in the appliance section), so I'm glad people have the same concerns I do about cleaning the shower! Apologies in advance if this is a bit tangental, but I've been looking at various shower surfaces for our new bathroom remodels. I like the look of tile/stone but absolutely abhor the idea of dealing with the grout and caulking -- it just seems like an inevitable problem. Those acrylic inserts appear to resolve this issue, but they're just so cheap feeling I don't think I can buy into it. Having recently visited a home show, I think I found a really interesting compromise called stonecraft (not sure if that's just the company brand name or the actual product name -- linked below). It's a plastic/cement mixture that they paint in two layers. The first layer goes on solid. Then they 'tape' the tile pattern you want, then apply the second coat (different colour). When the tape's removed, the first layer appears as the grout lines. I first looked at this for my patio deck, but the more I read into it, the more I liked it for other parts of the house -- including the shower (they even suggest it). My contractor worked on another house that used this outside and it really feels like a stone material. As it's painted on, it should be seamless (walls, floor, ceiling)and, therefore, a breeze to clean! Kind of hoping someone's used this and can share their experience, because it seems like a silver bullet. As for the doors itself, I'm wondering if anyone knows how long a shower stall would need to be to go 'doorless' without getting significant splashing out of water. Just hung up with my Ardex rep and got once again some killer info. Don (Ardex Rep) told me that there are a few ways of preparing the glass and to find out how it's done. Then he referred me to a local company that actually prepares the glass - paints it and then re fires it for durability. I need to now call this company and learn more info. I just had a customer ask me about it. She wanted to use a 3x10 glass tile in a brick joint to do a shower for her daughter. my first question was how fastideous was she about cleaning? Because with the bright gloss of the clear glass, it's going to show off each and every water drop left behind. For a deco band, it's not bad to take care of. But for a whole shower? Only if you're planning on hiring a cleaning service. and even then, it will have to be a well paid cleaning service!

Tip for any shower surface - avoid using "bar" soap, use a liquid / gel soap. Bar soap has the addition of talc, used as the "binding agent" to enable it to be pressed into bars. It's the talc (combined with skin oil and skin cells) that makes "soap scum". Another plus is a water softener. All water has mineral content which also contributes to scum and streaking. Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe down the surface after bathing as opposed to a squeegee. Never wash, or dry, microfiber cloths with any type of fabric softener or anti-cling sheets as that ruins their ability to absorb fluid.

There are plenty of glass tile sellers on ebay. I would expect to pay between $5-$10 per sq ft for glass tile which is color coated on the back (not paper sticker).

Here in LA, you can also find glass tile on craigslist.

Return the tile and buy it online (after getting a sample first).

A lot of colored glass tile is done with a color coating on the back of the tile, even better tile. Are you sure it's real paper though? That I've never seen. Usually it's a hard surface that's fused with the glass. Lots of tile is made in China. That's fine.

If it's a solid color without any design that's rather high unless it's 8mm and better quality, but still high for that.

Maybe it's not paper. The back of the tile is matte white, so I assumed that it is paper that the color was applied to, but maybe it is two coatings -- one with the color, and a matte white one behind it.

My bathroom tile had a paper backing as well and when I picked it up from the store I assumed it was the back, but after reading the instructions it turned out that the paper was on the front of it. We paid about $28 /SF for it.
