The link is something that every "casual user" should be aware of and take into consideration. MSWin, and Mac users both.....

Or, you could do everything online using a Live Linux distro, and save everything you do--- mail, files, photo's, work, everything, on two separate sites, and just not worry about it.....
Maintain a current image on a cd/dvd/key/card and keep and take everything with you whenever and wherever you go.

Whatever OS you use, for whatever reason you use it, just learn to to keep what is yours, yours and yours alone.

Interesting link and info. Are we supposed to get rid of any plug-ins?

My apologies for, something.... I have been trying to be nice guy and without any opinions given just pass along things that "regular folks" (my wife says that would be every body in the world except for me) that use "normal" operating systems like MSWindows and Apple's MacOS might find useful.....

Regarding plug-ins, and software and anything else you install or in some way allow to alter your OS, just know what all software you have installed and that you are actually using and running and what it all does and where whatever it is should "go".
Use long alpha-numeric passwords, use several of them, not just one for everything..... And, if you spend lots of time online looking at whatever, and open every joke and picture that comes your way, do a regular scan of your entire hard drive using a heavy duty commercial grade scanning software.
Encoding things you don't even know exist and "hiding" them in images of all sorts is something that never seems to be mentioned anywhere..... there are all sorts of crackers inventing all sorts of new cracks all of the time. A once a month quick reading of the latest in "security" goings on might one day save you a months worth of trouble.

I am sure my anti virus program needs updating and should be re installed. Please suggest a free oneI I have been negligent. Some avoid IE on the notion that malware is most often aimed at Windows and it's suite of applications. There's good reason they target those. The close interaction among Microsoft products give them multiple ways to get in. But of course, many people use them and never have a malware problem, because they (1) don't indiscriminately download or open every piece of junk someone forwards to them, (2) they don't open everything a web site invites them to open, (3) they keep a good antivirus/malware program up to date, and (4) they religiously install all MS security patches and service packs. Some take some pleasure in not using EI as sort of a defiant act against MS. There's some perverse bragging also going on. They don't use the browser of the ignorant masses, they use , preferably something the listener hasn't heard of. Kind of like sneering at AOL users. Email clients are mostly just personal preferences, and it's often just whatever they happened to start with. Some are a bit better for one or another persons particular email habits. Note that, since you're using XP, if it was bought many years ago and you're using IE version 6, it is no longer secure, and you should long ago have upgraded. You should also be sure you're now running XP Service Pack 3. Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/ If you have not kept up with security upgrades and service packs, block out some considerable time to download and install everything you need.

What worries me is that the young kids are leaning too much on devices to get them through even the simplest tasks. They don't want to do or think for themselves at all. I have to drive my teen-age grandson about 50 miles to another county about every 10 weeks for infusions. He's at the age where he's bugging parents to get his driver's license. (God forbid!) So I asked him, if you suddenly got really lucky and got your DL and miraculously obtained a vehicle, would you be able to find your way to the hospital by yourself? He said "as long as I had GPS, yes". So in the probably 15 times I've driven him there he hasn't paid attention on where it is or how to get there. I told him, "you're at the age where you should be paying attention to every place you go to, how to get there." He just looked at me with that look that says "why?" My Grand-kids have their faces stuck in some kind of device at all times, and even if I made it impossible for them to do it at my house, they would do it as soon as they left. But my son and his wife do it all the time, too, so there you go. And I've told them my opinion of all this and they just blow me off for being old and behind the times. DH insisted on using his GPS a couple of weeks ago to travel to another county for my BIL's funeral. I know the way without a device but he insisted. We left way early and should have gotten there in about 1 1/4 hours and it took us 2 and we walked in the door right when services were supposed to start. I was livid. That thing took us on every goat path to the point where we had no clue where we were. What's so ironic about the kids wanting to depend on a device for everything, yet they just love to watch all those reality shows where people go into the wilderness and live off the land. Yeah, right! LOL!!

I don't know if this could be the problem, if the toolbar that's missing is the top one in Richard's photo that says Firefox, File, Edit, View...etc...but a couple of times when that has disappeared, I couldn't figure out how to make it appear again, then discovered that I'd clicked on the green button in the top left corner (who knows why) and it expands to full screen eliminating the tool bar. The only way to find it again (for me) is to hover my cursor up near the very top of the page and the toolbar appears but won't stay showing. I have to click again on the green button to make it return to the normal view. I know it's basic knowledge for some, but if you don't know that it can be very frustrating.

I read the entire article last night, and I agree that it contains lots of good advice. I don't use many plugins and I'm careful about the ones I do choose to use. Thanks for posting it.

Sorry, I can't make much sense out of the first post.

The linked article is a bit inane - if the message is avoid/minimize downloads, including browser add-ons (which I agree with), it could have said that in much less space.
