Who's picky about table linens?

So, I've spent part of the day washing and pressing everything for Thanksgiving. We have vintage damask tablecloths and napkins, which are just lovely, but a LOT of work.

I'd love to have easy care, wrinkle free tablecloths, but everything I've found is 100% polyester, and frankly, looks and feels a bit like a '70's pantsuit.

Does anyone know where I could find reasonably priced, no-iron, easy care, linens that don't have that look and feel that screams polyester?

We also entertain a few other times throughout the year, so I was thinking of just plain white or cream. Just something that could be used year-round without all of the fuss.

Hi FM, I'm sure some of the ladies here can help you. I buy mine for the price and color. All of mine need at least lightly pressed to look real nice and flat.

I've used the nice dinner napkins when entertaining and no one seems to mind. I buy them at costco and always have them on hand. We will use these Thanksgiving for our evening meal.

I think you're talking about paper napkins? I agree that for napkins, that's the way to go, and we'll be using those from now on, but the tablecloths?

We entertain, at the very least, for 4th of July, New Year's Eve, and Thanksgiving. Plus the occasional Mexican food night, birthdays, etc.

I was just poking around the internet, and saw good reviews on a Canopy brand cloth from Walmart. Anyone ever seen those in person?

I am a picky eater. DH is not. My kids -- well, two out of three of them -- eat a wide range of foods. But because I am picky and I am Head Chef, my family only gets adventurous foods (my term) when they eat elsewhere! It's become a joke with people who know us. "Can we go to this restaurant? Can you find anything on the menu that you'll eat?" I'm not THAT bad but I am a baby and won't try ethnic foods like Indian, Moroccan, etc... I do eat Chinese food and Thai and Mexican. I can't stand dishes that mix meat and fruit. It just makes me want to gag. I won't eat hummus. I don't get it. Blecch. But it's always in the fridge because my family likes it. I balk at eating casseroles when I can't identify the ingredients. I don't like certain foods to "run together" on the plate -- I got that one from my father. Certain things are okay, but OMG, if I have a cold salad on a plate and it's running into something hot on the plate? IWWWW. Raw oysters or clams? Grosss. But I love lobster and shrimp. I am fully aware that I am a baby and perhaps a little bit crazy in this regard!

I agree that you shouldn't "settle" for something that you really don't want . . . just because it's free. I know that in planning my house I have certain "must haves" chosen, and they are 100% non-negotiable, but other things don't matter so much, and I'd reconsider my first choice . . . if something free came along. I would very much appreciate a friend offering me the choice! I'd make two suggestions: - When you refuse something, do so in the absolute most kind way: "Thank you so, so much for thinking of me. I've appreciated your other cast-offs so very much, and I can't wait to see them in use. You've been so very helpful with my project. But I'm really set on ___ for that particular item. I do hope someone else can use these things, and again it was so very kind of you to remember me." You don't want to close down future potential gifts by being too abrupt, and a simple, "Only if it's soapstone" might've been seen as ungrateful. I'm not saying you were wrong at all -- just perhaps a little brusk in the delivery. - Second, before you turn down stone (I assume nice stone), do consider ALL your needs -- not just your main kitchen countertops. Could that stone be used for a bathroom vanity? A coffee table topper? An outdoor kitchen or bar?

I hate to bring this up - maybe I am not understanding the deal, but I don't think you can do a paint credit on a V.A. loan anyway. I thought that you could offer a price reduction and pay closing costs for V.A. loans and no other consideration was allowed to be part of the deal. Technically, even your farm equipment deal is probably not allowed. You had to put it on the side because V.A. doesn't allow funds for V.A. loans to be used for the purchase of anything other than the residence. This means that furniture and farm equipment would need a separate deal with separate consideration. An allowance isn't allowed so far as I know. Now no one really gives a crap about $1,000 changing hands under the table. However, they will care about a $7,000 painting credit and I thought you had to sign something when closing that everything that was part of the deal is represented in the settlement statement.

Yes, it's true. Some people have a native acuity for flavor perception. Often they have more tastebuds and olfactory receptors (which are very important in flavor perception), but some of it is more in the brain, like perfect pitch. That's different from what is conventionally called "supertaster", which is what the coated paper tests--the ability to taste those three compounds. The theory is that the ability to sense bitterness helped people in certain parts of the world avoid certain local, poisonous plants. For each of the three compounds, there's a simple genetic ...is distribution the right word? Unlike complex traits, such as hair color, these are 0, 1 or 2 alleles. If you have zero, you taste paper. If you have 1 allele you can perceive the bitterness, but it's pretty mild. If you perceive it as revolting, you have 2 alleles. About half the population have 1, a quarter have 0 and a quarter have 2. You might have 2 for one compound and 0, 1 or 2, for another. I only dislike tannic red wines--there are some reds that I like--and hate olives, like Annie. We have one of those compound sensors in common. :)

I prefer 100% cotton or linen, but I understand the desire to have something with a little easier care. I recently bought a set of these polyester linens and I'm pretty happy with them. They have a little more shine than I like, but feel similar to a cotton sateen weave. They also have a nice folded hem rather than that serged edge you sometimes see on polyester cloths.

I either use antiques or make my own from fabric yardage and trims. That being said, I was gifted a "Better Homes" table cloth from Walmart and it isn't bad at all :^)
