Garden Planning - Where To Start?
Comments (3)There are a couple of things you can do that will establish what's currently in your garden and what areas need to be developed. First is a shade study. On or about June 21st (longest day of the year), step outside once an hour from 7 a.m. and continuing until 7 p.m. and note where there's full sun, part sun, part shade, full shade. Divide your property into segments and note the light conditions for each. When the time comes to plant perennials, trees, shrubs, etc. having the light conditions lets you do so with confidence based on their individual sun/shade requirements. Second, draw a map of your property to scale, noting the boundaries and orientation with the compass, drawing in structures (house, garage, shed, pool, etc.) and any trees, shrubs, established garden beds, patios, decks, paths/walkways, etc. Before you start thinking about what to add, it's good to know what you already have. This and an annual shade study were things I did when I first moved into my house. They're also what the garden design books recommend....See MoreTake a look and critique my house plan
Comments (12)I really appreciate the time and effort y'all took to look at my plans. I was really nervous putting myself out here to be analyzed... Whew so far so good We have a pool now without bathroom access, and it would definitely be nice to have one convenient, I think I could work figure something out, or just plant a tall bush close by ... Hmmmm I was worried about the breakfast area, being on small side, I might increase to a 9x10 I can always use bigger garage, ours now is 24 x 24 but it's an open carport.. So we don't use it for storage, so I'm glad you pointed that out. I'm a sun worshipper but only when outside... I'm hoping with the rear covered patio (which I don't have now) I can keep curtains open so we can have a view but without full sun beaming in. My husband has turned us into vampires with his desire for low electric bill. Good call on vent for oven I think I might rethink the 2 openings into sunroom.. I overlooked those as pathways... Completely overlooked that! I guess I can do double rods in kids closets instead of a shelf across back wall... The rest of space can be for their sports eqipment and such, they have walk in closets now and I really hate to downsize them. I think I'm the only family member who ever eats at a table, the rest sit in front of tv, or at the coffee table...so the breakfast area and the island will be where we eat.... The only reason I have the sink in the island is bc I dont have an exterior kitchen wall to have a window over sink... I just can't do a sink facing a wall. I think I might widen the island, I I agree about the foyer length... But it is the only hallway I have other than the garage entrance.... I could narrow it from 5 ft to 7ft but then I'm afraid the space might be too long and narrow.... Hmmmmm.. I will ponder on an alternative for kids Bdrm and bath and see if I might can switch it 180 degrees... This might be a solution to that... I poured over thousands of plans inder 2200 and none offered anything over 12x12 bdrms and itty bitty second baths for kids to share...and we want a one story and it just seems you can't have it all... On a budget anyway! Going to do some tweeking and rethink some things.... Thank y'all!...See MoreI plan on starting an herb/veg garden in my new home, any ideas?
Comments (2)If you know any contractors, you could ask them. How much soil are you looking for? If you want it by the truckload, there's usually "aggregate" places where you can order a truckload of top soil. Glover in Hilo may sell topsoil by the truckload, they have cinders at least. We build raised bed gardens from cinder blocks. About three layers high, then we put down a layer of weed mat to keep any tree roots from coming in from below. Then pile in whatever soil we can get. I'll usually let all the weeds sprout up and then yank them out before they seed. But you can skip this part if you don't mind weeding for the first year or so of your garden. Then the top 10" of soil, especially the top 4" are the best soil I can get. There's usually amendments of oyster shell worked into at least the top ten inches as well as compost and rabbit manure since we have that. Rabbit manure is an excellent fertilizer, you can put it directly on your plants without the need for composting as you'd have to do for chicken manure. For the cinder blocks, we set them so we can reach into the middle of the garden. How long doesn't really matter, but being able to reach the center from the sides is pretty important, IMHO....See MoreLooking for house plans for a house in the woods
Comments (6)One thing I absolutely love about our home in the woods: no curtains are needed for privacy. We are on the asocial side, so we faced our living areas away from the nearest neighbor and toward the wild. I don't mind if the coyotes look in. I think either style you've linked would work well, but it's best to have your house designed specifically for your property....See Morebooboo60
