cleaning non-slip surface in tub
Comments (69)While it looks like there is a variety of successful approaches, I think the reason some have success with one approach and others don't is the nature of the stains. Some stains are simple body oils stuck in the texture of the nonslip pads. Using something alkaline like shampoo should work for those to soften the stains and allow them to be scrubbed lightly. WD-40 should also dissolve those and lift them. Other stains are based on hard water build up of calcium. The calcium can't be seen because it is white but the calcium will catch and hold the body oils. If you cannot get the calcium off, the stains remain. This is where an acidic approach would work. Barkeeper's Friend is oxalic acid with a mild abrasive. If the stains are calcium based, this should wash them away very easily. I would like to suggest another approach to the plain body oils with no calcium build up. There is a cleaner used in the automotive detailing industry called Super Clean. It comes in a purple spray bottle at auto stores, hardware stores, Walmart, etc. It is basically 409 on steroids. If you have trouble breathing when using 409, then you will really have trouble breathing around Super Clean. I bought some for my car and, of course, it works great. Then I read the label and decided to try it in the kitchen. The first thing I tried it on was burned on grease on a stainless pan - the bottom of the pan. I sprayed it on and let it sit for a "dwell time" of 10 minutes. Then I ran hot water from the faucet into the pan and 99% of it just rinsed clean with no scrubbing. I thought maybe I had a pan with grease that looked burned on but was just sort of already softened, but no. I tried it again and again with the same results. So that is my experience with Super Clean. I thought someone might give it a try on their tub texture spots and report back here with results....See Morecleaning no-slip tub
Comments (3)I have by accident noticed Dial Clean Rinse Body Wash is amazing for cleaning. When traveling, I always make sure to have it with me. I first noticed in a jetted tub, all the bubbles were black! No more hotel jet tubs for me!!! Anyway, give it a try, scrub on, then fill with hot water and let it soak. Good Luck!...See MoreOT: How to clean Kohler cast iron sink
Comments (15)My sink prior to the one that was christened last night was a black Kohler 1 + 3/4 bowl sink. It was (and still is gorgeous). I didn't protect it right in the beginning and it got scratched from pots. So I emailed Kohler about what to use. Here is their response: For surface marks that you cannot feel with your fingernail (silver marks), please use Comet powder or gel (other products are too abrasive). Your pots and pans are softer than the enamel on the sink, so it's the pot material coming off on the sink. Wet sink, sprinkle w/Comet, let 'sit' for 10 minutes or so and scrub with a dishcloth or sponge. For stubborn marks, make a paste of the Comet and water and apply with a cork for leverage and grind in the paste. We also have a wonderful, very new cast iron cleaner that can be purchased by calling 1-800-4-KOHLER (8 oz. bottle, $5.90); it will eventually be available in the stores. Bleach water in a sink is not recommended; bleach causes enamel to become porous and the product will consequently soak up stains more easily. 50:50 vinegar and water solution (keep a sprayer handy) helps to break up calcification and water spots. If there are scratches that can be felt with the fingernail, likely there are rough pots and pans (Calphalon is one brand that admits having a very rough-bottomed style of cookware - or stoneware dishes - or even a favorite coffee cup) with rough undersides that could cause scratching if the basins are not protected (protective accessories are available for each sink and we recommend their use). In this case, we would recommend automotive polishing compound followed by an application of paste wax and getting protective accessories to prevent further problems. You can also visit our website as follows: http://www.us.kohler.com/tech/cast_iron.jsp (I did the automotive wax, polishing stuff--it really did a nice job!)...See Morenew Kohler shower pan stained; Miracle Method cleaning? x-post
Comments (16)I can vouch for the ROG cleaner. I just received it a week ago and used it on my Kohler cast iron tub's non-slip surface which, BTW, never looked new even when the tub was first installed. The tub was delivered to my house in a crate and the bottom was not protected so the non-slip surface was already dirty looking before the tub was installed. My tub has been in place for 13 years and has been used daily. The cleaner was expensive, but totally worth it. None of the other recommended cleaners from Kohler's "accepted" list worked AT ALL. The ROG has two steps. First was the blue cleaner (ROG 3) which is really more of an all-around cleaner. It's a good cleanser with a nice, fresh scent, but it did nothing to rectify the dirty look of the non-slip surface. Second step was the white cleanser (ROG 1) which made the bottom of my tub look brand spanking new! I can see the bottle lasting a long, long time. I do like the blue cleanser a lot, much better than the Dow I was using, and I will purchase more of it. I don't mind spending money on products that work, as that is preferable to wasting money on products that don't. Another plus with the blue cleaner is that it foams nicely and you don't have to use much of it. BTW, I believe magic erasers can permanently damage the non-slip surface. As the writer of the blog linked to above mentioned, the ROG3 is the cleanser recommended on Kohler's website, but it didn't really do anything to improve the look of my non-slip surface. I think it will probably work well to maintain the clean look now that the ROG1 has been used to restore it to new looking....See Morebusybee3
